Tech Riders & Advances: Are you asking (and answering) the right questions?
This panel discussion focuses on how to build and read tech riders, and how to handle advance conversations to best prepare for a touring show to perform in a new space. Experts who regularly advance shows (on both the presenter and producer side) will talk about what information is needed in a tech rider, and how that information is shared out. We'll walk through what to look for when you read a tech rider, and how to hold an advance conversation that addresses the needs of your show or venue.

ACT Presents- Thrive with Harmonious Technologies and Future-proof Your Lighting Career
Entertainment lighting design and programming has been evolving rapidly--it hasn't been strictly cue lists and scenes in quite some time. In more recent years, the pace of evolution has quickened to the point that technical training opportunities have not kept pace. The nuance of lighting networks interacting with audio, video, automation, and more at both the hardware and protocol level rarely makes it outside the project, let alone all the way back to the classroom. To thrive in this space, professionals need a multi-disciplinary mindset. This session explores why understanding connectivity, interoperability, and system integration is critical for the next generation of entertainment lighting designers, programmers, and technicians. ACT Entertainment and MA Lighting International bring decades of experience to the conversation, sharing insights from some of our most innovative clients on how lighting control fits into the bigger picture and what skills are essential for navigating this increasingly interconnected world.

Vor Presents: Vor Around the World, Harnessing Modern Software to Build and Archive Your Productions
From the makers of Vor, we welcome you to a panel discussion where we discuss how a camera and Vor can elevate your workflow to a whole new level. Taking a camera feed, multi-track audio, and data inputs (lighting, sound, video, automation, etc) Vor creates a composite video in real-time, overlaying cueing information, recording multi-track audio, and gives your production instant replay, allowing you to give context to what happened, when. While created by lighting professionals, this discussion seeks to draw in people from all disciplines to learn how you can make the creation process just a bit easier by utilizing Vor. We encourage attendees to come with questions and an open mind for how you can welcome technology into your process.

Oscilloscope training for the entertainment electrician
Many stage electricians regard the oscilloscope as a complex and magical piece of test equipment which can only used by highly trained personnel in a lab environment. This session seeks to dispel that myth by demonstrating the many uses and operation of the oscilloscope. The 'scope is now a tool which can be purchased for a very reasonable sum; many under $200. Participants will learn about the basic controls found on all oscilloscopes and how to use them to display vital information on the screen. Instruction will be offered on how to interpret what is displayed. Test signals such as AC power and DMX512 waveforms will be demonstrated. Other topics include basic specifications to consider, features, safety, and triggering methods. In addition, a more in-depth discussion of DMX512 will be offered as the 'scope provides more insight than any other typical DMX test tool. After a person learns how to use an oscilloscope, they will always want to include one in their tool kit. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own test instruments. Some 'scopes will be provided by the presenter and available for participant use.

So You’re in Charge of People! Now What? HR for Theatre Managers
Managing people in a theatre organization often begins long before formal training in human resource management. Production Managers, Department Heads, General Managers, and Managing Directors at all career stages are regularly called upon to oversee staff, artists, interns, apprentices, and volunteers—while navigating complex schedules, union agreements, and nontraditional work environments. This session offers a practical, theatre-centered overview of essential HR concepts, designed to support both emerging and seasoned managers. New leaders will gain clarity and confidence in their roles as people managers, while experienced managers will have the opportunity to revisit core principles, reflect on evolving practices, and share hard-won insights. Through guided discussion and collaborative problem-solving, participants will develop and exchange strategies for integrating HR thinking into daily operations in ways that strengthen both people and the creative process. Conducting Costume Research in an Image-saturated world
Conducting costume research is a necessary part of the process for designing costumes. How does one conduct historic research in a world in which most of the resources are online, and in a time in which we are surrounded by un-curated images that appear to be free? This panel will discuss Research, how to conduct it with online and in-person resources, how to determine the accuracy of what we are seeing, and how we can use it ethically. This panel will include Jeanette deJong, educator and author of the WORKING COSTUME DESIGNER'S GUIDES, Shelbi Wilkin, educator and researcher into Qing Dynasty dress, and Oliver Twitchell, an undergraduate student who has learned to use research for class projects as well as to receive a University-sponsored research grant for costumes. We will discuss 1.Trusted resources for researching costume history, both online and in person, and how to navigate online sources to find information. 2.How to locate or deduce information when researching an era or culture with fewer published resources, 3. Methods for teaching students to conduct research for their design projects in class and for their future careers, and 4.How to use and license images from online sources for uses, including publications.

Emerging Digital Video Showcase
USITT is seeking expressions of interest from students and early-career creatives to
participate in the Emerging Digital Design Showcase during the USITT 2026 Conference & Stage Expo. Presented on the main USITT Awards Stage, this curated showcase highlights the next generation of digital and graphic designers working in performance, live events, and immersive environments. This year’s showcase is inspired by the ocean, coastal environments, and the world beneath the surface, reflecting both the Long Beach location and the ideas of depth, motion, and interconnectedness inherent in live performance. Designers are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly rather than literally. This showcase is not a competition. It is intended as a platform for visibility, mentorship, and celebration of emerging voices within the USITT community. Location: |

A Welcoming Space for Who? What the Research Reveals About Racial Disparities in High School Theatre In Independent Schools.
Despite diverse student populations, and diversity backstage, many independent schools continue to produce high school theatre productions with predominantly white casts. Grounded in original research of Westchester County and Fairfield County independent schools, this panel explores why racially diverse student bodies still produce predominantly white theatre casts. Educators and theatre professionals will explore the potential causes, share lived experiences of possible causes behind this disconnect, and offer strategies gained from research of peer schools to create more inclusive theatre programs in K-12 settings.

An Introduction to Pyrotechnics for Non Pyrotechnicians
When a show includes pyrotechnics, it affects everyone: from stage management and lighting to audio and wardrobe. This session is designed to give non-pyro crew members the context they need to collaborate safely and effectively with pyrotechnicians. We’ll demystify common effect types used in live entertainment (gerbs, comets, mines, shells, etc.), explain why areas are locked down during continuity checks or firing, and discuss the basics of fireworks laws and licensing. We'll also touch on “cold-spark” machines, clarifying common misconceptions, and examine critical safety takeaways from The Station nightclub fire and other high-profile pyrotechnic incidents. By the end, you'll have the vocabulary and awareness to confidently interface with pyro crews and support safer, smoother shows.

Codes and Creativity: How Standards Empower Safer, More Innovative Entertainment
Too often, entertainment standards are seen as creative constraints rather than enablers of innovation. This dynamic, expert-led session will challenge that myth head-on, exploring how consensus-based standards like those from ESTA’s Technical Standards Program (TSP) don’t stifle artistic freedom but actually scaffold it. Drawing from real-world examples in parades, touring shows, festivals, and film/TV, this session will show how applying standards leads to safer, smarter, and more imaginative production outcomes. Attendees will leave not only with a better understanding of technical standards like ANSI ES1.42, E1.46, and ES1.40, but with insight into how these tools can elevate creative design while protecting artists and audiences alike.

Costume Design and Technology Commission Distinguished Achievement Award: Ruth E. Carter
Please join us in celebrating Ruth E. Carter, recipient of the 2026 Costume Design and Technology Commission Distinguished Achievement Award.
Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing, two-time Academy Award-winning American film costume designer, celebrated for her work in bringing to life the vibrant and culturally rich costumes of “Black Panther." Carter made history as the first Black person to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, securing Marvel Studios' first Oscar in the process. She repeated this groundbreaking success with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” becoming the first Black woman to win multiple Academy Awards in any category and the first costume designer to win for both a film and its sequel. Carter's costumes for “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are a tribute to the people of Africa, blending traditional and contemporary elements with modern technology. She skillfully created Afrofuturistic designs that honor ancient cultures, empower the female form, and provide unparalleled representation on screen. In “Wakanda Forever,” she expanded her innovative designs, introducing new superhero costumes and the underwater world of Talokan. Tasked with creating hundreds of costumes, Carter crafted visually stunning pieces inspired by both Wakandan culture and post-classic Mesoamerican Maya culture, merging history with imagination. With over three decades of experience and more than seventy credits in film, television, and theater, Carter has worked with directors such as Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Coogler. Her designs span iconic films like “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Amistad,” “Selma,” “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Coming 2 America,” and the “Black Panther” franchise. Through her meticulous costume design, Carter enriches narratives, especially those centered on African American experiences, solidifying her as a preeminent voice in period genres and Afro aesthetics. Her career achievements include Academy Award nominations for “Malcolm X” (1993) and “Amistad” (1998), as well as an Emmy nomination for the miniseries reboot of “Roots” (2016). In 2019, she was honored with the Costume Designers Guild’s Career Achievement Award and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021. A member of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Carter represents the Costume Designers Branch, championing diversity in storytelling. Most recently, Carter’s work shines in the box-office hit “Sinners,” where she elevated the film’s narrative through bold, symbolic costuming—most memorably in its iconic dance sequence—demonstrating her unmatched ability to fuse story, movement, and design into cultural spectacle. She continues to expand her influence beyond film, designing Teyana Taylor’s unforgettable Black Dandy look for the 2025 Met Gala and producing a major project on legendary couture designer Ann Lowe in partnership with Serena Williams’ production company—spotlighting the legacy of a fashion pioneer long overlooked in history. Carter's impact in costume design extends beyond the screen and are celebrated in her traveling exhibition “Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” and her book “The Art of Ruth E. Carter,” released in May 2023. The exhibit showcases over 70 costumes from Carter’s illustrious filmmaking career, infused with artistry, offering an intimate glimpse into her creative process and the iconic designs she’s brought to life on screen. The exhibition has been in residence in nine cities and will be traveling from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Indiana to the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carter is beloved in her hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, where a mural of her life and career is displayed at Rebecca Johnson Elementary School. She was awarded the key to the city in 2021 for her achievements and service. Ruth Carter is a proud graduate of Hampton University, Virginia (HBCU), and has earned honorary doctorates from Hampton, Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, and Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Ruth E. Carter’s contributions to costume design are a national treasure, preserving history, celebrating identity, and reimagining the future of Black culture on screen. Creating Stencils and Wallpapers with Digital Aids
The purpose of this session will be to present the most updated technologies being used to create stencils and wallpapers. A panel of Current working professionals will present their experiences in techniques such as using a machine cutter like the Cricut, and creating the wallpaper files with software like Photoshop. The professionals will be from experienced industry positions, and the content will be professional productions. As the conference is in California, the hope is to possibly include a professional that has created for film or TV and if that poses different methods than theater. The presenters will walk through their process to give the attendees a basic how-to list of the projects. Presenters will address devices, software programs, materials and application techniques. All projects will be presented from a realized production with shop process photos and final onstage work.

Creating the Stage Manager’s Toolkit for Sensitive Content
There has been a wonderful shift in the industry to focus on creating safer workspaces for the performers of sensitive content through specialists such as intimacy directors and fight choreographers. However, the performer is not the only recipient of the staged content each performance. Stage managers are active recipients of the actions on stage as their work is dependent on processing each performance and having a role in guiding the actions on stage. The content processed from the stage can have a psychological/physical affect on the stage manager involved. This session will take principles from stage specialists, psychological research, and mental health advocacy work to teach participants how to craft a tool kit specific to their personal stage management experience. Participants will leave having a new arsenal of tools to better equip themselves in show processes with sensitive content. This work enhances the manager's experience to give them the empowerment to protect their own well being while maintaining the show's artistic integrity and safety.

Demistifying Atmoshperic Effects
Atmospheric effects, such as haze, fog, smoke, and low-lying effects, are powerful design tools used across live entertainment to heighten visual impact and audience immersion. However, these effects also come with significant technical, safety, regulatory, and perceptual considerations that every designer, technician, and production manager should understand. This session provides a comprehensive and accessible walkthrough of atmospheric effects, moving from fundamental definitions to advanced considerations. We will identify the most common types of effects and the fluids, consumables, or gases that create them.
Attendees will learn how to evaluate and purchase atmospheric machines, understand the differences between haze types, and anticipate technical needs such as power, fluid consumption, and DMX control. We will then shift into a detailed discussion on safety and compliance: • Why audiences and performers may cough or perceive discomfort • The role of HVAC, airflow, and placement in minimizing negative impact • How to prevent fire alarm activation and coordinate with local authorities • Understanding the relevant ANSI standards and OSHA codes • Resources available through the Fog & Smoke Working Group • How to conduct and interpret air quality testing / air sampling • Overview of Environ reports and the chemical analysis behind "safe exposure" limits Throughout, we'll examine how to incorporate atmospheric effects intentionally during the design process, from budgeting and cueing to scenic integration and load-in timing. Participants will leave with checklists for venue coordination, machine selection, risk assessment, and effect documentation that meet or exceed industry best practices. Daniel Ayers is a member of the ESTA Fog and Safety Workgroup. Presented by Safety and Health Commission Speaker(s): Daniel Ayers

From page to stage quicker - workflow between SketchUP and AutoCAD
In today's fast-paced production environments, scenic designers are increasingly turning to a hybrid workflow: modeling in SketchUp, rendering with plugins like Thea, Podium, or V-Ray, and drafting in AutoCAD. While this method has become an industry standard, integrating these tools efficiently can be time-consuming and technically complex. This workshop offers practical strategies to streamline the transition from page to stage using SketchUp and AutoCAD. Attendees will learn tips and tricks for importing and exporting files, managing geometry and layers, and avoiding common pitfalls that can slow down the process. The session will also address the limitations and trade-offs of cross-platform integration, empowering designers to make informed decisions based on their production needs and timelines.

From Theme Parks to Black Boxes: Designing Sound Systems and Careers in Themed Entertainment and Theatre
Designing audio systems in themed entertainment and theatre requires more than technical know-how—it takes storytelling insight, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and thoughtful preparation. This session will explore how system design differs between immersive themed environments and traditional theatre spaces, highlighting the unique questions and constraints designers and technicians must navigate in each. But we’ll also look beyond the system design to focus on career design. What skills translate between these industries? What tools are used across both, and which are specialized? How do professionals overcome imposter syndrome or apply for jobs they’re only 85% qualified for? Through a candid, multi-voice panel, we’ll discuss the pathways, pivots, and practical lessons that shape a successful audio career across these two dynamic fields. Whether you’re a student, early-career designer, or educator, you’ll gain clarity on technical expectations, job market realities, and strategies for growth.

In Collaboration: Deaf West Theatre x LA Phil x Center Theatre Group
In the spring of 2022 the LA Phil and Deaf West embarked on a unique partnership to integrate a major orchestra, opera singers, and Deaf actors in a fully staged production of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio. In the spring of 2024 they remounted that same production and took it on a European tour. Later that same year Deaf West and Center Theatre Group came back together, following 2004’s Big River and 2010’s Pippin, to bring a new production of American Idiot to the Mark Taper Forum. This panel discussion will focus on this period of collaboration in 2024 when Deaf West joined forces with two of LA’s largest arts organizations to produce these incredible pieces of theatre. Members of the Stage Management, Production Management, and Artistic teams for these productions, representing all three organizations, will discuss the successes, challenges and untold behind the scenes stories of how these shows were brought to life and the audiences that experienced them. In addition to examining the detailed process of bringing Deaf Actors, Hearing Actors, and Musicians together in rehearsal and on stage, they will also discuss the interorganizational collaboration that occurred as these three major LA institutions shared discoveries, resources, and even people through this incredible period of partnership.

Integrating Antiracist Practices Into the Design Process
This session aims to examine how designers can integrate antiracist practices into their design processes. Participants will be split into small groups to create “design teams” for each table, rather than separated by discipline, to encourage participants to consider antiracism in a team context and enable them to learn from each other. Participants will learn about integrating antiracism into the learning process and potential sources of bias in design. They will obtain various reflective tools to enable them to examine their own design processes. Participants will then reflect on their own processes with their small groups. This provides an opportunity to scaffold discussions that support and uplift practitioners with marginalized identities and examine ways in which privilege can be used to advance these actions.

Introduction to Arduino Controlled Stage Effects- Part One
Microcontrollers (like the open-sourced Arduino platform) are a relatively low-cost way to solve a broad range of technical challenges. But, where do you start, and how do you get from a mock-up on a breadboard to a realized effect on stage? This session will answer those questions, discuss some challenges of integrating an effect into a production, and use Tinkercad, a web-based simulator, to introduce common components necessary to create an effect. Participants should bring their own laptops to follow along.

Introduction to Creating Flexible Sound Cues
This session offers a technical and conceptual framework for creating and delivering theatrical sound design content. Aimed at providing early-career sound designers with practical tools, this session presents process-focused strategies that facilitate control, flexibility, and efficiency. During the session, we will explore approaches to constructing and shaping sonic material, and showcase a number of widely used approaches to flexible cueing, including the use of stems, loops, vamps, and effects sends. These approaches empower sound designers to work within a constrained timeline while adapting to evolving staging decisions and pacing shifts during tech, all while maintaining control over aesthetic intent, spatial depth, and narrative-driven gestures.

This session introduces the core principles of interdisciplinary drafting using common CAD tools and workflows, like Vectorworks, AutoCAD, and Rhino. Through practical examples from lighting plots, scenic elevations, and engineering drawings, you'll learn how layers, title blocks, symbols, and standards all differ. We'll cover how to set up efficient files, share clean drawings with collaborators, and avoid common pitfalls that can slow down a production. No CAD experience required, just bring your laptop if you'd like to follow along!
This is a half-day class on Wednesday, 3/18, from 1 pm - 5 pm. Advanced registration and additional payment required. If minimum attendance is not met by February 9th, 2026, this class may be canceled Speaker(s): Katie Wolfe Michael Coney Mandy Heath

Load Cells: Where, When, Why — Load Monitoring in Ballrooms, Arenas, and Theaters
As rigging systems become more dynamic and the margin for error narrows, load monitoring is increasingly vital to ensuring safety and efficiency. Yet, many professionals, particularly those working in fast-paced or resource-limited environments, lack clarity on when load cells are essential, how to interpret the data, or how to apply it in real time. This session brings together experienced professionals from corporate, concert touring, and theatrical sectors to demystify load monitoring. Through case studies and practical examples, attendees will gain insight into how load cells are used to manage shifting loads in arenas, monitor aging infrastructure in theatres, and ensure safe rigging in unconventional venues like hotel ballrooms.

Scenery - Off Stage
This is a panel style discussion on careers in Live Events outside of the traditional Theatre Environment. Hosting a range of professional Technical Designers and Project Managers from major entertainment companies like PRG, TAIT, ATOMIC, and ShowFab we will be discussing the similarities and subtle differences between scenery used on traditional stages and other areas of live events. This includes work on product activations, conference presentations and displays, Music and Touring Acts, Arena shows, Broadcast, Placemaking, Weddings, Themed Entertainment and immersive experiences. The panel will discuss their own professional development, work in traditional theatre spaces, and transitioning into their current role off the stage. We’ll go over some theatre-specific terms and their counterparts in the live event world, as well as some commonly used terms and products found in events that may not be used regularly in Theatre. The focus is primarily on scenery fabrication and technical design as well as interaction with clients, designers, and creative teams. The focus will be on how your training in theatre can enhance your skills outside of the theatre space.

Scenic Painting With Your Lighting Designer
Painted scenery is typically created to be viewed under theatrical lighting. A lighting designer, working with additive color theory, shifts and creates colors of light by shifting around the available wavelengths with gels, instruments, and lighting consoles. Today’s instruments, consoles and systems can even let lighting designers choose and combine individual wavelengths within LED instrument to create their colors of light. Scenic artists, who typically shift and create colors using subtractive color theory, combine pigments that change and adjust the paints, which affects how light wavelengths within colored light reflect back to audiences. Without the correct wavelengths (lighting) or the correct colors (scenics), scenery can look visually muddy and drab. Collaboration with your lighting designer via samples, conversations, and complementary color mixing is vitally important. This session will talk about this collaboration, additive and subtractive color theory, and most importantly, show real paint samples under different lighting fixtures and modes to illustrate this connection. With the help of lighting instruments and paints, we can show clear examples of successes, and possible missteps when lighting painted scenery. For costumers and dyes, dyed fabrics are a whole different animal. That would be covered in future sessions.

Stage Machinery: Arresting Falling Loads
Most of us have looked up to see equipment that is held in place firmly with steel beams and wire rope. Many of us are also quite familiar with hoists designed to lift heavy loads and set them back down again. However, there is another type of mechanism that, although perhaps not as familiar, is just as important to our work: brakes, dampers, dashpots, lanyards, and lifelines are some of the mechanical devices that can be used to control a free-falling load and help bring it safely to a stop. In this session, we will explore the engineering fundamentals of work, deflection energy, and energy dissipation, and show some examples of how it is applied to the equipment that we see backstage.

Finding Your Light: Strategies for Teaching Lighting as a Non-LD
Although lighting is a critical element of any theatre production, not every academic program has a dedicated lighting designer—or even a lighting course. As a result, lighting is often taught by practitioners of other disciplines, including scenic designers, TDs, directors, & more. This session aims to support those non-LD instructors by providing both general guidance and concrete suggestions for teaching lighting, both within & beyond the classroom. The Art of Adire: Stories of Beauty, Risk, and Resilience
This session explores the Adire tie-and-dye textile tradition as a powerful form of women’s performance art and cultural expression in Africa. Originating among the Yoruba of Nigeria, Adire has long served as a medium for storytelling, heritage preservation, and artistic innovation. This presentation examines how women artisans transform fabric into visual narratives, using pattern, color, and motif as expressive tools, while simultaneously navigating gendered labor dynamics and ecological hazards. Grounded in Feminist Art Theory and Waste Management Theory, the study critically analyzes both the cultural significance and environmental risks associated with Adire production. It highlights the resilience of women who sustain this tradition despite exposure to toxic chemicals, economic precarity, and systemic marginalization. The conversation further considers Adire textiles as performative acts that challenge traditional gender roles and contribute to Africa’s evolving artistic landscape. Participants will gain insight into how textile arts function as feminist performance, the role of women as cultural custodians, and the urgent need to address the environmental and health challenges these artists face. This session is ideal for costume and textile designers, performance scholars, and sustainability advocates interested in global craft traditions, feminist art, and intersectional design. Understanding the Alphabet Soup of S&H
Keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe and healthy can often be challenging in our industry, and to do so we need to be aware of the rules and resources available to help us comply with those rules. This session will introduce you to many of the agencies and authorities that develop and enforce the standards and requirements (OSHA, NFPA, and local AHJs) and the available references, resources, and tools to help you understand, meet, and incorporate those requirements into your workplace training and operational procedures (ESTA, ESA, NIOSH, ACGIH, BWC, etc). As time allows we will also discuss assessments and inspections, strategies for developing plans and procedures, and required recordkeeping.

Women in Theatre: How to Ask For What You Need
It can be difficult to advocate for oneself and ask for what you need. Oftentimes this stems from being unfamiliar with what is ok to ask and unsure about how best to ask for the things you would like to request. Participants in this session will be introduced to a few concepts to help them think about how to approach negotiation (both formal and informal related to asking for what you want and need). After an introduction to these concepts, participants will actively engage in practicing these concepts through role play negotiations. After engaging in these negotiation role plays, session participants will debrief as a group to learn what worked, what didn't, and how to apply this to advocating themselves in a variety of settings.

IWEISS Presents: How to Document and Present Engineering Calculations
“How to Document and Present Engineering Calculations” is not a math class. Instead, this session is for anyone who wants to make sure their hand calcs don’t vanish into the void. Whether you’re designing rigging points, checking structural loads, or verifying equipment safety, your responsibility shouldn’t stop when you hit the equals sign. What will you do if your boss — or worse, a lawyer — calls and asks how you arrived at your design decision? Documenting your math is just as important as the math itself, so that your client, a third-party engineer, or even "future you" knows how and why you reached your design conclusions. This session focuses on how to organize and format your calculations into clear, traceable, and professional reports. We’ll cover practical tools for presenting calculations with a focus on how to build readable, well-organized documents. You’ll learn best practices for headings, units, version control, and layout so your work still makes sense months or years down the line. Whether you’re a student drafting your first rigging load table or a seasoned TD refining your workflow, you’ll leave with concrete tips and a practical toolkit for making your calculations clear, professional, and ready to communicate to anyone who needs to see them.

On-Site Drapery Cleaners Presents: Fabrics and Flames: Essential Guidelines for Fire Code Compliance, Cleaning, and Handling of Stage Drapery
Fire Safety on stages is a real issue- drapes are naturally flammable and, when exposed to hot lights, or electrical sparks, there is an increased risk of fire. Flameproofing on drapes form an important part of a theater's fire safety system. We review the different types of fabrics and flame retardant treatments available. In addition, we share practical knowledge from the field sharing little-known facts such as flame retardant wears off over time, and even Inherently Flame Retardant fabrics will become flammable with the accumulation of dust. Finally, we review how to make drapery compliant with the fire code without incurring the significant cost of replacement. Stage Draperies require on-going care and maintenance to continue to look good and be safe. Presentation will discuss fabrics used in theatres, show tips on handling and caring for them to preserve their lifespan.

Creative Conners Presents: When One Just Won’t Do, Strategies for Grouping Multiple Motors to Share the Load.
Sometimes, you’re trying to rotate something heavy, fly something large, or lift something massive, and your trusty 5HP motor just isn’t up to the task. The obvious answer? Use a bigger motor. But bigger isn’t always better: large motors come with space constraints, tricky wiring, and mounting headaches. Using multiple smaller motors can power the same movement, with greater flexibility. With multiple motors, we can use more compact models, distribute power where needed, and add scalability to our design. But there’s a catch: using more motors also increases the control system complexity, since we need to keep the motors synchronized. Each motor needs to follow the motion plan. Faults from one motor need to be propagated to the group to prevent damage to the element being moved. And we need to protect each motor from becoming overloaded. This session explores various group motion strategies, from mechanical linkages to simple control methods, software coordination, and drive-level electronic gearing. As we examine these options, we’ll discuss the pros and pitfalls of each approach.

Meyer Sound Presents: Why Doesn’t It Just Work? Demystifying Networked Audio with Milan AVB and AES67
When networked audio first arrived, it promised simplicity: fewer cables, streamlined setups, and smarter systems. But for many in live sound and theatre, the reality has been the opposite—too many protocols, fragile configurations, and shows jeopardized before they begin. This session will bring some clarity to the chaos. We will explore two popular protocols for networked audio—Milan AVB and AES67—and break down the strengths, limitations, and intended use cases for each. You will learn why Milan AVB was developed as a fully deterministic, low-latency, high-fidelity standard designed specifically for performance-critical environments, and how it differs from AES67’s interoperability-focused design based on standard IP networks. While Milan and AES67 are not directly compatible, understanding both protocols is essential for navigating the current and future landscape of digital audio. We’ll also address common points of confusion, including clocking, traffic management, stream configuration, and system scaling. Designed for audio professionals working in live performance, themed entertainment, and installed systems, this session includes practical insights and actionable strategies to help you make informed choices in a crowded protocol landscape.

Once the curtain rises, one person steers the fate of the entire production: the stage manager. But leading a creative team through high-pressure situations requires more than just calling cues—it demands exceptional leadership and conflict resolution skills. Join internationally-touring GSM turned Producer Terrence Williams (The House of Dancing Water, America's Got Talent LIVE, Mad Apple, The Illusionists) as he shares hard-won strategies for navigating leadership in the theater. In addition to guiding you towards reputation-building leadership skills, attendees will learn how to embrace conflict as your greatest leadership tool, how to handle problem people, the essential traits that cement your reputation as an excellent captain, and how to prevent a mutiny on your ship.

Git Organized...Version Control for Theatre Artists
We’ve all seen it: CueList_FINAL, CueList_FINAL2, CueList_FOR_REAL_FINAL_THIS_TIME. It’s time to break the cycle. This session is an honest, accessible introduction to version control—not for programmers, but for theatre artists, designers, and technicians who work with dynamic files like lighting plots, scenic renderings, QLab files, show paperwork, and more. You’ll learn how tools like Git, GitHub, and Git LFS (Large File Storage) can radically improve collaboration, traceability, and sanity across production workflows. We’ll walk through: - How version control works—explained in common sense, not code. - How to track changes across Photoshop files, Vectorworks plots, QLab show folders, and script drafts. - How to use GitHub to store, share, and roll back versions with confidence. - Real examples from theatre workflows, including when Git is the right tool—and when it’s not. Bonus: Learn how to structure your folders and commit messages so future-you doesn’t want to scream. This session isn’t about coding—it’s about working smarter, collaborating cleanly, and putting an end to “final-final-final3”. If you’ve ever lost a cue sheet, overwritten a file, or emailed a 200MB attachment labeled “USE THIS ONE,” this session is for you. Takeaways: - Attendees will learn what version control is, how it works, and how to use it without knowing code. - Attendees will understand the pros and cons of tools like Git, GitHub, and Git LFS for managing large design files. - Attendees will receive setup guides and file-naming conventions to immediately improve personal and team workflows. No prior Git knowledge required. This session will provide drag-and-drop starter templates and plain-English workflows. You’ll leave equipped to organize your digital life—and teach others to do the same.

How Show Control is Used in Live Theatre Production
When there’s already a stage manager calling cues and skilled technicians behind the scenes, why do some productions still rely on a show control system? Why are these systems considered essential in theme parks, cruise ships, and other high-stakes environments? How complex does a production need to be before show control becomes a smart—or even necessary—choice? This session introduces the concept of show control: the use of centralized systems to coordinate lighting, sound, video, automation, and effects with precision and reliability. We’ll explore when and why show control is used, what it enables that human cueing alone cannot, and how it can be the key to both creative ambition and operational resilience. Designed for students, educators, and faculty from theatre, media, computer science, and engineering disciplines, this talk makes show control approachable—unpacking not just the how, but the why. Whether you're working on experimental performances or preparing students for careers in themed entertainment or immersive media, this session offers insight and inspiration for integrating show control into your own projects.

Myths and Misconceptions of Blackbox Theatres
This session is a follow-up to 2022's session "Not Just a High School Theatre." In this session we will explore the myths and misconceptions often held by administrators, users, and architects regarding the design, functional capabilities, costs, and management of Black Box theatres, which are often seen as a more flexible, less "complicated" alternative to traditional proscenium style auditoriums and theatres, particularly at the K-12 and community college levels.

Foundations of Entertainment Rigging - Day Two of Two
While there is no substitute for experience when it comes to rigging, this class will present the foundational concepts that underpin good rigging practices. Taught by trainers with more than 40 years of combined experience in the field, topics are derived from the ETCP list of critical knowledge areas for riggers and will vary to suit the learners in the room. Presentation of information will be approachable for early career participants while also providing a depth of discussion through examples and case studies that will bring value and engagement to more experienced riggers. In addition to instructional content, resources for further learning and reference will be featured and explored. Participants will walk away with improved confidence, knowing more about both the "how" and the "why" of entertainment rigging.
ETCP Renewal Credits: 6.0 per day, total of 12 renewal credits upon completion of both days. This is a two-day class that runs both Wednesday, 3/18 and Thursday, 3/19 from 9 am - 5 pm. Lunch will be one hour, and on your own. Advanced registration and additional payment required. If minimum attendance is not met by February 9th, 2026, this class may be canceled.
