Devising Theatrical Shows with Emerging Technologies and Softwares
Focusing on ARatorio for the Mis-Remembered, a prototype virtual/actual hybrid theatrical performance at the University of Iowa, this session seeks to showcase how to combine emerging technology tools and techniques taught at USITT into a realized show and how to navigate using these tools in your own practices in ways that all members of the creative team can understand. Showcasing the use of live motion capture, CLO3d for costuming, Vectorworks and Unreal Engine/TwinMotion for scenic and lighting design, live projections and live streaming into 360 VR, attendees will be able to both experience parts of the performance in the room while being shown behind the scenes on how it was all accomplished using free or cheap tools and software and what was learned along the way. From conceptualization all the way to final product, this project focused on creating a cohesive workflow for incorporating new technologies into the theatrical devising process and educating the entire team on how they worked while encouraging them to experiment with them throughout the rehearsal and tech process. This session seeks to share that knowledge and showcase what future iterations of this process will accomplish. This session is presented by the Digital Media Commission.

Aligning Mission, Vision, Operations, and Management with venue design.
Is your organization really getting what it needs out of your facility? Often a renovation or new facility is considered when organizations feel constrained in how they want to engage their audiences and their communities. Evaluation how an organization manages and operates as it aligns to its mission and vision should be the first step before engaging a design professional to make facility changes or in consideration of relocation or a new building. This session explores why this matters and its panelists will discuss strategies on how to accomplish this to make the best decisions in the design process to support your mission and vision.

Navigating the Entertainment Industry as a Multi-Hyphenate Artist and Technician
Explore the questions related to pursuing multiple roles and/or disciplines within the theatrical and entertainment industries with a particular emphasis on computer-based design and technology fields (ie. the intersection of Lighting Design and Technology, Media Design and Technology, Sound Design and Technology, etc.). Many folks have been advised of the adage "A jack of all trades is a master of none" - that there is an inherent benefit and virtue in maintaining a tight specialization within their field.

Foundations of Entertainment Rigging - Day Two of Two
While there is no substitute for experience when it comes to rigging, this class will present the foundational concepts that underpin good rigging practices. Taught by trainers with more than 40 years of combined experience in the field, topics are derived from the ETCP list of critical knowledge areas for riggers and will vary to suit the learners in the room. Presentation of information will be approachable for early career participants while also providing a depth of discussion through examples and case studies that will bring value and engagement to more experienced riggers. In addition to instructional content, resources for further learning and reference will be featured and explored. Participants will walk away with improved confidence, knowing more about both the "how" and the "why" of entertainment rigging. This is a two-day class that runs both Wednesday 3/05 and Thursday 3/06 from 9 am - 4:30 pm.This PDW takes place at the Wexner Center for the Arts, off-sight of the convention center. Ungrading
Ungrading is a practice that eliminates or minimizes the use of teacher-assigned grades in a course, focusing instead on providing regular detailed feedback to students on their work connected to learning goals. This unique approach seems to be growing in popularity in classrooms across the country as an alternative to the traditional teacher-led grading and assessment that we’re all used to. Curious about ungrading, if it’s right for you, or how to move your design / tech class in this direction? If so, this session is a great place to start. Hear from panelists who have integrated ungrading into their curriculum with specific examples of how it’s being used in the classroom, benefits for student learning, and potential pitfalls to be aware of. Exploring System Alignment and Optimization Processes Using Smaart and Data Modeler
Smaart is a software-based audio analysis platform from Rational Acoustics that is widely considered the industry standard for measurement of professional audio systems. Data Modeler is a new DSP modeling software recently released by Rational Acoustics that allows users to take Smaart data and perform virtual audio system alignment and optimization. A frequent training request from Smaart users is to provide specific guidance in the alignment and optimization process—everything from where to start the alignment process, where to place measurement microphones, how to set timing for imaging, how to align subs to mains, etc. Often the challenge is there is rarely one definitive correct answer, but a variety of application-dependent approaches. This Professional Development Workshop will introduce the Smaart v9 and Data Modeler software applications and offer hands-on training and guidance on how to effectively wield these measurement and modeling tools within the system alignment and optimization process. We offer a 30-day trial demo that attendees can download (within 30 days of the session) and use for the class.

Too Much Drama on the Network, Ethernet in Live Theatre
The use of computers these days requires being able to make external connections. In the theatre computer connections are more than just to a printer, e-mail, and "the Internet". Moving media, sound and video around, as well as exchanging control signals for lighting, scenic, and sound is now quite common.
There is a difference between being “familiar” with something and “understanding” it. Quite a few audio professionals have had exposure to some use of digital audio/video/control, but there are a lot of gaps that need to be addressed to gain mastery and to understand not only what to do to make things work, but why those actions are required. This session is made of of modules that cover the use of Ethernet networking, how it started and has expanded, what can be done now, how digital technology can actually make things simpler and more cost effective, and how to integrate the multiple protocols that are in common use today. Participants will need to bring their own laptop, power source, and a way to get ethernet connection into their laptop. This is a full-day class on Thursday 3/06 from 9am - 4:30pm. Lunch will be on your own. Advanced registration and additional payment required. If minimum attendance is not met by February 1st 2025, this class may be canceled. Continue reading for a more in depth explanation. We will start with a bit of the history of computer networking to understand how the current system of moving data over the Ethernet evolved and the rational behind the different solutions that are in common use for a better understanding of all the the parts that together make up the current, and evolving, state of Ethernet. The next module will explore the growing intersection between computer networking in a theater contrasted with a general facility and how traditional IT departments are now becoming directly involved in providing network connectivity in theater spaces. The priorities are different as are the vocabularies. Understanding the concerns and requirements of each side is necessary for efficient collaborations without a lot of drama. With the basics reviewed, the following module will look at the technical requirements found in theater applications. What requirements are there when using Ethernet in the theater and how are they specified. Details on working out the required bandwidth, latency, control, and security of the network will discussed. The next module will go over how Ethernet networks are designed. How does a design support coexistence and what levels of interoperability can be attained. How the common protocols in use today can be used at the same time on one physical network, and what to do when this is not practical for a given situation. Following the design discussion will be a look at practical ways of monitoring and actively managing a network and what must be done to insure the integrity of the network. What is required of a monitoring and management system to allow users who are not IT specialists to be able to fully use Ethernet networking in the theater. Finally the session will conclude with how to become involved in driving open source solutions to serve the needs of the theater community. Distributing accurate information from the leading edge of technology is always a challenge but it is a responsibility of those at the edge to share with others so that as a group we can advance the state of the art. In the 21st Century the use of computer networks to transport both control and media has become ubiquitous. Regardless of the size of production, the budget, or the department one is working in, there is a minimum fluency with the technology of computers and their network connections that is required to survive. The instructor is Richard Bugg the Digital Products Solutions Architect for Meyer Sound Labs. Working with Meyer Digital products since 1999 he has decades of experience in mixing live sound for music, theater, and special events. He is the chair of the IEEE 1722.1 working group for IEEE 1722™ Device Discovery, Connection Management, and Control, a member of the IEEE Computer Society Microprocessor Standards Committee, Co-chair of the Avnu Alliance ProAV working group, and a life member of the Audio Engineering Society. Anything But Typical, Tailoring for Non-Standard Sizes
This panel will offer a variety of perspectives on the tailoring process for nonstandard sizes in menswear. Three professional tailors: Laura Robinson of Penn State University, Daniel Weger of B.D. Weger Tailoring, and Lara Berich of West Virginia University will discuss and demonstrate their individual reasoning and choices when approaching the patterning process of menswear for nonstandard sizes. Utilizing a piece of period research, the three tailors will pattern and create a mock-up of a menswear look for a nonstandard sized model. They will discuss the approaches in the patterning systems that they use to accommodate varied body types, as well as what inclusive practices are utilized in the process to ensure that the model/actor can give the essential feedback the tailors need to end up with a successful look. This panel offers a rare glimpse into a typically guarded aspect of tailoring, shedding light on inclusive practices and strategies employed to ensure every garment fits perfectly. Join us as we break down barriers and point the way to a more inclusive approach to tailoring. Presented by the Costume Design and Technology Commission.

At The Table
This session is a practicum on Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations in theater. The presenters include both management and union representatives with real life experience negotiating CBAs, which includes both working with negotiating partners across the table and with their own constituents in caucus. The session will start with an overview of negotiation principles and labor law basics followed by a role-play demonstration of negotiations and caucus. In the second half, the attendees will form teams at their tables and take their turn at negotiating a scenario created by the presenters. The presenters will be available for advice and/or mediation during the negotiations. Like life, curveballs may occur in negotiations! At the end of the session, each set of negotiating partners will have a chance to report to the group how they collaboratively solved the scenario. Participants will take away a first person understanding of how negotiations feel both at the table and in caucus as well as foundational principles for negotiating CBAs.

Beautiful Uncertainty or How to Live (and Thrive) With Risk
Whilst there is sadly no magic 8 ball to help us make the right decision, and no crystal ball to help us see the future, there are certainly ways to lessen negative effects of risk and uncertainty on our lives, and even learn to spot opportunities. These tools are not monetarily expensive but do require some time and effort. But the rewards can be wonderful. I hope to show you how uncertainty and risk can be embraced and harnessed to help build resilience and community.

Behind the Curtain: Understanding and Navigating Imposter Syndrome in the Theatre and Entertainment Industry
Imposter syndrome goes beyond mere fleeting moments of uncertainty; it embeds itself in the mind, warping perceptions of one's own value and capabilities. The high stress and ephemeral nature of theatrical environments provide the perfect conditions for imposter syndrome. Many theatrical artists face frequent criticism and rejection that play hard against the psyche. Whether it be a review in an online editorial questioning design choices or a harsh comment from a casting agent about an actor’s appearance, theatrical artists are often put under the microscope. The intention of this session is to introduce the psychological phenomenon of imposter feelings and how it impacts skilled and gifted creatives. We will explore the definition of imposter syndrome, its various manifestations, associated behaviors, coping mechanisms, and how we can each offer support to those grappling with these feelings. Our goal is to initiate a conversation surrounding imposter syndrome, fostering an environment where such crippling self-doubt can be openly addressed and normalized. Beyond the Art Part; Budgeting, Management and Planning for a Scenic Artist
It is always difficult to make estimates, and they will never be perfect, but the more we make systems to help us make more consistent guesses, the more we lower the margin for error. This panel is a practical demonstration of budgeting and organizational tips for professional artists from the publication of the Scenic Charge Artist's Toolkit. Specifically, it covers the use of an included estimator sheet, including a walkthrough of how it works and how to use the program logic to help with preparation and estimation.

Creating an Arabic Opera from a Designers Perspective
There is a scarcity of Arabic Opera, there is a scarcity of new Opera devised from a design perspective, so how do you approach such a task. Join Lina Younes, the creator and designer of “La Traged´ie de la Voix |” an opera singer’s quest for the ideal space where he can hear his voice as audiences hear it. Lina is on a constant quest for story-centred collaborations which explore narratives while showcasing processes. She creates worlds with one eye shut and an index finger as her wand. Her work is about freezing moments, replaying them, changing scenarios, playing out consequences, and then repeating. Impossible things happen in an instant; objects vanish, come to life, and are set off again. In motion. She is an imagineer with a great love and a great weakness: soap bubbles.

Equity Minded Teaching Projects for the class room: Universal Design for Learning
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a framework for designing inclusive learning experiences. Designing learning in a way that includes disabled students can benefit all students. This theory can be applied to other barriers to learning, too. In this workshop session, participants will engage with peers to explore the three principles of UDL, draft inclusive instructional strategies for theatre classrooms, and examine biases about our learning spaces. Participants will be sent pre-work to prepare for this session so that they can finish the workshop with some plans that are ready to implement. Presented by the Education Commission.

Introduction to Working with Spatial & Immersive Audio
As spatial audio technology becomes increasingly available, it will be important to understand the processes behind the many options at a sound designer's disposal. This workshop will present the foundational knowledge of how various forms of spatial audio function. It will do this from a technical perspective, starting with power-preserving panning laws and then continuing to introduce the core concepts behind more complex forms: VBAP, DBAP, Knn, and Ambisonics. It will discuss commercial versions available and free/low-cost alternatives. After attending the workshop, one should understand what each form of technology is and when using each would be appropriate.

Opening Doors How CAD/CAM is Revolutionizing Accessibility in Theater Shops
Discover how CAD to CAM technologies are revolutionizing theatre shops by enhancing accessibility and flexibility. This session will explore how these technologies enable drafting work to be done from home, allowing individuals with mobility issues or those who need a more controlled environment to contribute effectively without being physically present in the shop. Learn how creating a less stimulating environment benefits individuals with sensory sensitivities and how the flexibility in work hours allows tasks to be completed at times that best suit each individual's needs, rather than adhering to a rigid schedule. This adaptability ensures that the work process can be tailored to fit the person, rather than requiring the person to adapt to the traditional work environment. These technologies benefit multiple areas of theater production, from scenic design and props to costumes, making theatre shops more inclusive and accessible and empowering a diverse range of individuals to participate in the creative process.

The scenographic model has played a crucial role in the evolution of theatrical set design, offering a tangible, three-dimensional glimpse into the artistic and practical considerations of historic production practices Despite their significance, models are often underrepresented in historical archives due to their fragility, volume, and the challenges associated with their preservation as compared to the more easily stored and preserved flat sketches and painted elevations. The model also provides unique insights into staging practices that are not always discernible in two-dimensional sketches and graphics. This panel aims to underscore the indispensable value of scenographic models by examining extant models from the Renaissance to the modern era by highlighting the scenographic model’s historical importance, current preservation challenges, and potential future directions in the field of theatrical design.

Rigging Standards for the Everyday User
There are a lot of standards, codes, and rules to theatrical rigging systems. To the everyday user it may seem like a monumental task to dig through the mountains of documents to find the pertinent information. In this session we will discuss where to find the pertinent standards, how some standards overlap, and most importantly a peek into how to interpret the standards. At the end of this session participants will have the tools they need to locate and comprehend the pertinent information that an everyday use should know.

Self-Onboarding for the Entertainment Manager
Despite an organization's best efforts, technical managers across the country find themselves insufficiently onboarded for the roles and responsibilities of new positions in which they find themselves. It's become clear that managers in new organizations must take responsibility for their own onboarding if they strive for success in there first weeks and months of their tenures. This session will present a framework and detail proven strategies for managers to onboard themselves into new organizations. While the framework could be used in any management situation, this session will address onboarding situations of specific interest to USITT attendees. This is for managers of all experience levels.

Shared Trauma is Not Success: Redefining the Badge of Honor in Technical Theater
This session aims to challenge the ingrained culture within technical theater that too often equates working under extreme conditions with success. Many times we have celebrated the "success" of completing a production despite unrealistic deadlines and grueling hours, leading to a normalization of shared trauma. Misuse of well intended sentiments such as "It's kind of fun to do the impossible", and the pervasive mentality of "the show must go on" perpetuate a cycle where mental and physical well-being are sacrificed. This discussion will address the harmful effects of this culture, propose healthier work practices, and offer strategies for change. Presented by the Safety & Health Commission. Theatre Based Economic Development How the Renovation of the Lincoln Theatre Helped Bring Economic Life to a Blighted Neighborhood
For more than 40 years, the Lincoln Theatre provided stage and screen entertainment for Columbus’ African American community. In the 1960s and ‘70s, however, construction of a major highway displaced more than 10,000 residents and divided the King-Lincoln District from downtown, forcing the Lincoln to close. The theatre sat vacant for over 30 years and was slated for demolition. Instead, city leaders mounted a revitalization effort for the neighborhood, using the newly rehabilitated Lincoln Theatre as a catalyst for new investment. Join staff from the Lincoln Theatre and CAPA, as well as the design team, as we discuss the importance of restoring this iconic community gathering place, and the economic impact its reopening is having on the neighborhood.

What does it take to do Sound for Broadway? A Q&A with Musical Theatre Sound Professionals
Musical theatre is a collaborative effort that requires a team of people to effectively communicate, compromise, and implement. We invite the USITT audience to ask their questions to Broadway sound professionals to get behind the scenes insight into how they work together both within and across departments to transform an artistic and technical vision into a live production. The panel, representing various roles within a sound team will engage the audience in a conversation fueled by questions submitted by USITT members prior to the conference. Robyn Bykokfsy, the training and education manager at Meyer Sound will moderate a conversation between acclaimed sound designers, sound design associates, A1s, and A2s. The panel will have a diversity of perspectives, including voices from historically underrepresented people within the professional theatrical sound profession. This session is audience-driven with an open call for anonymous question submissions (via an online form) to do our best to mitigate hesitation that may arise from fear of submitting a “stupid question” as well as selection bias. Meyer Sound’s Education team will contact USITT Sound Commission and will leverage its educational partnerships to ensure we collect questions from a wide range of students and faculty. We will select the most sought-after inquiries.

Introduction To Show Networking Hands On Workshop
This introductory hands-on workshop, based on John Huntington’s book Introduction to Show Networking, explores the basics of networks and how they work in show systems such as lighting, sound, video, and even stage machinery. Basic networking concepts, IP addresses and assignment methods, subnet masks, general network operations and physical topologies will be introduced through readings and lecture videos, and then explored through a day of hands-on labs. Network device control will also be explored, and other topics like VLANs, simple routing and broadcast storms will be demonstrated in group exercises.
Once enrolled in the workshop, participants are given assignments to read the Introduction to Show Networking book and/or watch several (unlisted) lecture videos. Then, the group meets online approximately a week in advance of the hands-on session (date t.b.d. from a group poll) to review the information and answer any questions from the readings. This session will be recorded for those who can not attend in real time. Foundations of Entertainment Rigging- Day One of Two
While there is no substitute for experience when it comes to rigging, this class will present the foundational concepts that underpin good rigging practices.
This is a two-day class that runs both Wednesday 3/05 and Thursday 3/06 from 9 am - 4:30 pm. This PDW takes place at the Wexner Center for the Arts, off-sight of the convention center. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to this off-sight location. More details concerning Public Transportation options and directions will be delivered mid February. Lunch will be one hour and on your own. Advanced registration and additional payment required. If minimum attendance is not met by February 1st 2025, this class may be canceled. ETCP Renewal Credits: 6.0 per day Total of 12 renewal credits upon completion of both days. Speaker(s): Ethan Gilson Edward LeahyLocation: Wexner Center for the Arts |
