Introduction to WebAR for Live Performance- WebAR Part 1
SOLD OUT
This introductory session explores the use of web-based augmented reality (WebAR) for live performance. Presenters will provide a brief overview of AR on mobile phones and discuss the opportunities and challenges of using WebAR (in comparison with game engines like Unreal and Unity), drawing from UCLA REMAP research and courses, and experimental productions for examples. In particular, we will look at our own quest to reduce iteration time, provide better rehearsal experiences, and involve larger audiences on their own devices. The session will use Niantic’s 8th Wall platform and discuss some of the technical approaches we have explored for theatrical control. There will be an opportunity for Q&A and open discussion ahead of the hands-on session on Friday. Class seating is limited, and seats will be available on a first come first served basis. Attendance to this session is recommended for the Web AR Part 2 session "Hands-on with WebAR for Live Performance" on Friday. Presented by the Digital Media Commission. PROP LAB- Design on the Go- Collapsible Theater Model Box with the Glowforge Laser Cutter
SOLD OUT
The physical set model is an indispensable tool to express space, texture, and color and to inform the director and actors in the rehearsal room —but it is bulky, hard to travel with and expensive to ship. As many designers ditch the model in favor of all digital 3D modeling, this demonstration invites you to explore space and time saving alternatives that will encourage you to keep creating the beloved model. In this session we will explore laser cutting and the collapsible model box. Using simple CAD drafting and the Glowforge laser cutter, we will create a template of a theater that we will cut out and assemble. The pieces will break down and store within a small box that we will create which makes up a portion of the stage floor. Attention will be spent on creating a box that is easily carried, shipped and assembled, as well as strong enough to withstand the rough handling of the rehearsal room. We will also explore other laser cutting techniques that can help make your model beautiful and save precious hours in the studio. Attendees should have basic 2D CAD and scenic model making skills. A laptop with a CAD program of your choice loaded is recommended though not required. Files will be converted to SVG to interface with the Glowforge. Observers welcome. Presented by the Scenic Design and Technology Commission.

Surviving the Death of Tungsten
The development and popularity of LED fixtures can be a threat to community owned and smaller school venues as they stop being able to use their tungsten lighting systems because they can no longer buy the lamps. There is a threat that the lighting industry will lose an entry point into interest in “backstage". As lighting has become more "digital", with higher expectations, it is no longer something easily available to non-professionals, and instead venues contract a professional. And often the professional has little time even to show the community theatre people and students anything about what they are doing. This is one of the many informal "chat" sessions being presented at the International Hub in the Network Nexus Booth #3233 on the Expo floor. Speaker(s): Nick Moran

Designers as Artistic Directors
Can designers serve as Artistic Directors? It is not typical, but it is also not unusual. Designers like Peter Hunt, David Hayes, and Richard Devin have held the position of Artistic Director. There is no doubt a very different leadership style based on their different experiences with directors and company members, as well as design and technical staff. Please come to the Network Nexus booth and chat with Richard Devin, Lighting Designer and former Producing Artistic Director of the Colorado Shakespeare Theatre. Fabrics and Flames: Essential Guidelines for Fire Code Compliance, Cleaning, and Handling of Stage Drapery
Fire Safety on stages is a real issue- drapes are naturally flammable and, when exposed to hot lights, or electrical sparks, there is an increased risk of fire. Flameproofing on drapes form an important part of a theater's fire safety system. We review the different types of fabrics and flame retardant treatments available. In addition, we share practical knowledge from the field sharing little-known facts such as flame retardant wears off over time, and even Inherently Flame Retardant fabrics will become flammable with the accumulation of dust. Finally, we review how to make drapery compliant with the fire code without incurring the significant cost of replacement. Stage Draperies require on-going care and maintenance to continue to look good and be safe. Presentation will discuss fabrics used in theatres, show tips on handling and caring for them to preserve their lifespan. Presented by On-Site Drapery Cleaners.

BACKstage Exam Curricular Strategies and Growing Student Engagement
The BACKstage Exam, a joint educational initiative of USITT and the Educational Theatre Association, is more than a test, it is also a rich resource for educators as they develop curricular materials and set goals for their students. Participants will learn how to use the materials to craft meaningful, sequential learning experiences for their students, covering each of the eight technical disciplines included in the exam. Not teaching to the test, but using the test to help determine what we should teach. The session will be especially useful for less experienced technical theatre educators.

A Holistic Approach to Anti-ableism and Disability Inclusion in Theatre - Part ll

Rogers the Musical - Expo Stage Presentation
It’s not uncommon for a beloved film to inspire a theme park show or attraction. But creating a 30-minute live musical production based on a 4½ minute segment of a fictional Broadway show in a Disney+ series was a first when “Rogers: The Musical” opened at the Disneyland Resort in 2023. The one-act play featured seven musical numbers and more than 50 costumed looks, most of which were not part of the original television scene but were conceptualized and created by Disney Live Entertainment Costuming. Join us for an introduction to the creative process presented by the Costume Designer, Joe Kucharski, and hear about how the costumes came to life from the show’s Costumer, Renee Harrison. Presented by Disney Live Entertainment.

Creating Change 1/52 at a Time: An Interview with Beowulf Boritt, Amith Chandrashaker, and Johanna Pan
Being an artist, creator, and maker in the technical theater world can be incredibly fulfilling, but when looking at ways to give back, move forward, and create positive change in the industry, what can you do? If you are Beowulf Boritt, you start a foundation for early-career designers from historically excluded groups who are working in live performance.
Seattle Rep Managing Director Jeffrey Herrmann leads an interview with set designer and 1/52 Project founder Beowulf Boritt, and project contributors Amith Chandrashaker, lighting designer and Professor of Lighting at the University of Maryland, and Johanna Pan, costume and scenic designer and 2021-2022 grant recipient.

Touring also provides the dominant experience and employment opportunity for young theatre artists and technicians. This session will present a panel of working professionals in the touring industry speaking about the technical and human challenges of touring, ranging from set design and construction considerations to the protocols and practices of show operations, to health and safety concerns including the joys of living on a bus. Behind the scenes video will help create a real-world framework for the conversation. Presented by Clark Transfer.

Advanced Contract Negotiation Techniques
Whether you've landed a few contracts or have successfully been working your entire career, it may have become apparent that you've left money or better working conditions on the negotiating table. Perhaps you've realized that poor contract negotiation has allowed inequality to persist in our industry. How do we hone our negotiating prowess? How do we combat negotiating structures that encourage continued disadvantage? Producer Terrence Williams will lead participants through a litany of advanced negotiating techniques designed to overcome objections and open doors. In addition to considerations intended for all technical production workers, additional time will be dedicated to tactics for overcoming gender and ethnicity wage gap scenarios. Presented by the Management Commission.
