Make Your Own Stage Blood Recipe Book
SOLD OUT
Slash Zone! Developing, mixing, and buying theatrical stage blood is something most costume designers and technicians are required to do many times in their careers. This lab is focused on sharing and testing various blood recipes and products used in costume shops. Attendees will learn methodologies for sampling and testing theatrical stage blood, as well as experiment with mixing and testing different stage blood recipes. Attendees can also share their own experience and recommendations. All these different stage blood recipes and products will be complied to create a Stage Blood Recipe Cookbook that will be distributed to participants. Do you need a blood recipe that is edible? That is safe for sensitive skin? Does it need to be able to be washed out of a costume every night? Do you need lots of spatter? Or just buckets of blood? This is the place to come try out various formulas to create the perfect blood effect.

Foundations of Entertainment Rigging
While there is no substitute for experience when it comes to rigging, this class will present the foundational concepts that underpin good rigging practices. Taught by trainers with more than 40 years combined experience in the field, topics are derived from the ETCP list of critical knowledge areas for riggers and will vary to suit the learners in the room. Presentation of information will be approachable for early career participants while also providing a depth of discussion through examples and case studies that will bring value and engagement to more experienced riggers. In addition to instructional content, resources for further learning and reference will be featured and explored. Participants will walk away with improved confidence, knowing more about both the "how" and the "why" of entertainment rigging. This is a two-day class run on both Wednesday 3/15 & Thursday 3/16 9am - 4:30pm Advanced registration and additional fee required. There will be a one hour lunch break where attendees will be on their own.

Vor - Building and Archiving Productions in Real Time, A Discussion on How Vor Can Upgrade Your Workflow
Join the creators of Vor, with Mike Wood (Lighting Designer), and Tim Semon (Production Stage Manager) in a roundtable discussion where we discuss how a camera and a new piece of software (Vor) can elevate your workflow to a whole new level. Using a camera feed, multi-track audio, and data inputs (lighting, sound, video, automation, etc) Vor creates a composite video in real-time, overlaying cue information, recording multi-track audio. Vor gives your production instant replay, providing context to what happened, when. While created by lighting professionals, this discussion seeks to draw in people from all disciplines to learn how you can make the creation process just a bit easier by utilizing Vor. We encourage attendees to come with questions and an open mind for how you can welcome new technology into your process. Speaker(s): Tim Semon, he/him Mike Wood Jess Creager Mr. Scott Tusing

Local USA 829 Paints!
Come and paint with Scenic Artists of Local USA 829! That’s right, Local USA 829 PAINTS is an open experience for painters of all levels. Over the course of three days, all are invited to stop by to watch and learn from some of the best Scenic Artists in and around St. Louis who have worked at The Muny, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, St. Louis Shakespeare Festival, Switch/Liberate Your Brand, and Image Technologies Corporation, to mention a few. This interactive lab brings together Local USA 829 Scenic Artists and you to demonstrate and teach both traditional and contemporary tricks in painting breathtaking, large-scale drops. This year, we’re blending precision and the sublime in which sharp and clean architecture meets a soft and elongated landscape. Those interested in picking up a paint brush should make sure to wear clothes that can get paint on them and be prepared to paint for at least one hour. If you're interested, sign up early on the EXPO Floor at the USA Paints Lab. Participation will be on a first come, first served basis.

Building Balanced Internships and Apprenticeships
As organizations examine past inequitable practices of unpaid internships or under-supported apprenticeships, hearing from both sides in the relationship will help shape future opportunities for these important professional development programs in arts management. Hear from interns and apprentices, educators who want to send students to better internships, and arts managers who hire these positions. Together we can discuss ways to make these programs more equitable, inclusive, and humane.

Captain of the Ship: Leadership & Conflict Management for Stage Managers
Designers and Technical Directors may assist during rehearsals, but come show time, there is one leader for the entire production: the stage manager. It’s your job to know and understand every aspect of the production and to make certain that every element is covered and ready for the show. If someone misses a technical cue, it’s the stage manager’s role to correct that issue, whether in real time or through coaching and training to avoid a repeat scenario. Join Producer and internationally-touring GSM Terrence Williams as he leads you down the path to being a better captain and navigator for your ship. In addition to guiding you towards reputation-building leadership skills, attendees will learn best practices for handling problem people, why compromise is rarely the solution, and how to prevent a mutiny on your ship.

Creating a Humane and Sustainable Theatre for Stage and Production Managers
As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, stage managers are examining the working conditions that have led to so much burnout, both physically and mentally, in the performing arts. 60 hour+ and 6 day work weeks are unsustainable, but this long-established schedule is difficult for theaters to change financially. How can we get to a 5-day work week and shift the power dynamic of the stage manager and servitude? A Producer, a Production Manager and stage managers will lead a discussion about making these changes to create a more humane work environment that is sustainable for staff.

Creating Inclusive and Equitable Productions through Language and Practice
This session offers students, teachers, and emerging and professional theatre-makers an opportunity to explore the ways we work with one another and the language we use in production environments. Through an evaluation of outdated and offensive language and practices that have become the industry standard, we seek to offer practical tools and methods that will make equitable, inclusive, safe, self-liberating, and anti-racist environments possible for folx navigating marginalized identities and those who would like to support them.

Foundations of Entertainment Rigging - Day Two
While there is no substitute for experience when it comes to rigging, this class will present the foundational concepts that underpin good rigging practices. If minimum attendance is not met by February 15th this class may be canceled.
ETCP Certificants will also receive 6 continuing education renewal (for parts 1 and 2) https://s7.goeshow.com/usitt/annual/2023/documents/etcp2.jpg Speaker(s): Steve Bognar Mr. Edward Leahy Ethan Gilson

Readily Achievable: Identifying Access Barriers and Including Workers With Mobility Related Disabilities
This session will investigate the relationship between theatre buildings and regulations such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design. How are theatres of varying ages affected by this legislation? What are companies' responsibilities when it comes to access for workers? Building on the presenter's research and personal experience, we will explore these questions as we delve into the maze of physical access barriers that disabled workers often face and outline methods for assessing and addressing these issues.

Stage Managing in Devised or Unusual Spaces
Managing theatrical productions in a theater has many challenges, but those challenges are what we train stage managers to anticipate and problem-solve. Managing productions in devised or unusual performance spaces can be thrilling, but often presents a whole separate set of problems to trouble-shoot in order to keep the artists and audience safe and engaged. Marley Giggey leads a discussion on working in spaces that are created or unique for production.

Theatre Rigging Standards for the Everyday User - DeLong Rigging Solutions
There are a lot of standards, codes, and rules to theatrical rigging systems. To the everyday user it may seem like a monumental task to dig through the mountains of documents to find the pertinent information. In this session we will cover what standards are meant for users vs. what’s geared towards manufacturers and installers. We’ll discuss where to find the pertinent standards, how some standards overlap, and most importantly a peek into how to interpret the standards. At the end of this session participants will have the tools they need to locate and comprehend the pertinent information that an everyday use should know.
ETCP Certificants will also receive 1 continuing education renewal

On-Site Drapery Cleaners - Stage Drapery - Care, Handling and Fire Proofing
Stage Draperies require on-going care and maintenance to continue to look good and be safe. Presentation will discuss fabrics used in theatres, show tips on handling and caring for them to preserve their lifespan. Fire Safety on stages is a real issue- drapes are naturally flammable and, when exposed to hot lights, or electrical sparks, there is an increased risk of fire. Flameproofing on drapes form an important part of a theater's fire safety system. We review the different types of fabrics and flame retardant treatments available. In addition, we share practical knowledge from the field sharing little-known facts such as flame retardant wears off over time, and even Inherently Flame Retardant fabrics will become flammable with the accumulation of dust. Finally, we review how to make drapery compliant with the fire code without incurring the significant cost of replacement.

Identifying and Understanding Financial Literacy for Underrepresented Populations
Does the thought of how best to negotiate salary and benefits baffle you or create a knot in your stomach? In many underrepresented populations, money and financial literacy is not a topic that is discussed at home, in the classroom, or in the workplace. This session is the first in a series of three sessions presented. Join us for one or all of the sessions. Everyone is welcome--all genders, all ages, and all professions.
A panel will address industry professionals/members who are in different departments and stages of their careers (early, mid, soon, or recently retired) and answer targeted questions from a moderator on topics such as but not limited to: How to navigate topics like pay increases, health care, retirement; How to negotiate salary and benefits; How do you advocate for yourself when you have a difficult personality in a supervisor position; What else can you ask for: transit, parking, etc; the importance of LLC and Insurance; How to prepare financially for retirement or career changes; and flip the conversation from “how can I get the most for me or advocating for yourself” to “how we can give everyone the best.” The panel will consist of individuals from the St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts and financial advisors from Wells Fargo. The qualified financial presenter shares REAL advice for real people in our industries (freelance, not-for-profit, academic, commercial, etc) like what we can do, what we should do, and what we could do better. Presented by the USITT I.D.E.A.S. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Social Justice) Committee. Speaker(s): Ms. Tammy Honesty Sue Greenberg Kalie Baucom

Introduction to Show Networking System Design
Based on John Huntington’s 2020 book Introduction to Show Networking, this talk details a methodical, step-by-step process for analyzing network needs and basic system design for systems like lighting, sound, video, and even scenic automation. Topics covered include basic needs analysis, subnet structure, network topology, documentation, network verification, security, and reliability. The process is generally understandable by beginners, but those with a basic understanding of IP addresses and networking concepts will be able to understand the concepts at a deeper level.

It’s All About the Bones
SOLD OUT
Buying bones can be confusing; it's not just about "spiral bones or spring steel bones". Bones are used for corsets, stays, bodices, and doublets too. In fact, they can be used to create huge puff sleeve heads and panniers. In this hands-on class you will make several different types of bone casings using different types of bones. All samples (approximately 10, yours to keep) will be sewn on one length of fabric so you can see and feel the differences to compare the results. A discussion of bone types and qualities will help you see that just because 3 bones look alike doesn't mean they are the same. Sample garments will be available to better illustrate how bone function can vary, so you can better understand how to know which bone is right for a specific project. Learn to make bone casings with seam allowance, using casing tape, make curved bone casings, and invisible ones too! The session will help you understand which type of bone to use and when. We'll even explore sew through bones-- you might be surprised how good these can be!

Mike Wood - Engineering Commission Distinguished Achievement Award Winner Presentation & Reception
Please join us in honoring and celebrating Mike Wood, the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Achievement Award in Engineering. Brian Smallwood will host a casual conversation with Mike Wood about his career and significant contributions to the field.
Mike has over 45 years’ experience working in entertainment lighting equipment design and development for companies varying in size from 10 to 25,000 employees. After failing to be a successful theatrical lighting designer he started his career with the BBC in the late 1970's before moving into the commercial world in the mid 1980's. Since then he has worked for both start-up and well-known companies developing both static and automated luminaires and their control systems for theatre, television, concerts, and film production. Since forming Mike Wood Consulting LLC in 2004 he has provided professional support and assistance to over fifty clients with many of them returning for multiple projects and long-term relationships. Having worked in both the USA and Europe and been elected the leader of trade associations in both places has helped him develop a unique mix of engineering skills coupled with a deep understanding of sales and marketing critical to bringing successful new products to the market place. In particular he feels fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to help the recent industry transition from conventional light sources to LEDs. Mike has published over 200 articles and papers on entertainment lighting and its applications and holds a number of patents in lighting systems and control. Mike holds an M.A in electrical engineering from Trinity College, Cambridge. In 2006 Mike was presented with ESTA's highest honor - the prestigious Eva Swan Award. AIVA: Artificial Intelligence Music Composition in Educational Sound Design
A robust sound design often includes underscoring to accentuate the performance on stage. However, licensing and copyright laws can obstruct the use of prerecorded music in a performance, and original composition can be time consuming and costly. Enter AIVA, a web-based artificial intelligence which specializes in music composition. With dozens of preset musical styles and the ability to create dozens more, AIVA can be used to build and record soundtracks and underscores tailored to a production’s specific aesthetics. In this session we will explore how to use AIVA to create and edit our own tracks. Bring your own computer and headphones and walk away with original music. Optional desktop interface download at https://www.aiva.ai/download. Presented by the Education Commission.

Challenges and Benefits of Lighting Site Specific Work
The pandemic forced us to look at alternate ways to bring our art to an audience. Many organizations went on-line while others moved outdoors. One beauty found during this time of pivoting was the discovery of new ways to reach audiences, maybe even new audiences. Let's explore ways to bring performances to site-specific locations and make the space enhance our storytelling and how we approach lighting the work. From design approach to the technical requirements, what questions do you need to ask before a location is selected? Why should a technical consultant or lighting designer be a part of the project from the beginning? Be prepared to laugh at some lessons learned the hard way.
