Indigenous Lighting Design
Theatre has as many forms as there are human traditions of living life in the world. In the ‘mainstream’, theatre may have gone through many changes and modernizations but in its core, theatre still remains as the entertainment/ celebration of the masses, specific to their region, religion, culture, language, topography and many more aspects. This diversity is the richness of theatre; which has helped theatre survive century after century. On one hand we have popular urban theatre forms well established and almost homogenized in presentation such as Broadway Musicals, Opera, Contemporary Dances, Ballets etc. on the other hand we have highly specific and indigenous theatrical forms such as Chinese Puppets, Indian Jatra and Mobile Theatre, Ramayana of Indonesia, Rituals in Sub-Saharan desert communities, Pabuji Ki Phad (scroll painting narration of western Rajasthan in India), Water Puppets of Bali etc. This panel is conceived and conceptualized with a purpose to bring these forms and styles of design to the forefront, with aims that these alternative practices will inspire the modern generations.
