Bringing Character Designs to Life: Cold foam Mask Making
With the ever-widening use of elaborate costumes and puppets in live venues and the popularity of shows such as the Masked Singer, increased information about techniques for expanding mask-making technology can be a valuable tool. It is important for teachers to bring this information into the classroom and into academic theatre in order to build skills by making their technical students aware and prepared for job opportunities. There is no limit to what can be done when the information is offered, especially when it involves many different processes that can be used in so many different areas. It is also helpful and can build confidence in designers when they realize that anything they can imagine, can be translated into reality.
There are many materials out there for creating masks. Expandable Cold Foam allows the artisan to create custom-fitted masks that can fit so well on the actor that they can move with them. This material is lightweight, and can be painted and decorated in any conceivable way. It can also be fitted over a rigid understructure to create a more elaborate articulated moveable mask. The process to create these pieces is time consuming but very rewarding as the skills required can benefit and cross-over into other fields such as makeup, costume character design and creation, costume crafts, wig-making, puppetry, cosplay, and much, much, more. To make it relevant to young adults, this presentation begins with a translation of a character from a well-known digital game, moves on to sculpting, 2-part plaster mold-making, foam casting, patching and trimming, inserting the closures, adding vision ports, painting with brush and airbrush, and finishing with hair. Included are numerous lists of materials and professional tips to facilitate a successful process. Speaker(s): Jana Henry Funderburk Karen Greenfield Mary Mcclung Lara Beene

Well Being Hour - My Job is My Gym
For each day of the virtual conference, we have curated an hour dedicated to movement and mindfulness. In a typical year, attendees spend a lot of time traveling from session to session in and around the conference center. The virtual format led us to dedicate time to encouraging folks to take an hour to move around, stretch and focus their minds. For the first 30 minutes we’ll get you heart moving, then slow things down for meditation and stretching in the last 30 minutes. We have activities such as cardio kick boxing, fitness dancing, yoga, meditation, and tech table stretches. Watch for specific offerings, each day, throughout the week.

Stage Management On An International Stage
Performing arts managers exist around the globe but our titles, roles, and responsibilities have evolved differently by country. Ronel Jordaan of the University of Cape Town will share how the role of the performing arts managers in South Africa is like and unlike their counterparts in the United States and the UK. In 2019, Jordaan partnered with David McGraw, creator of the Stage Manager Survey, to create the South African Creative Industries Technical Staff (SACITS) Survey to explore how production managers, stage managers, and technical staff have evolved in South Africa. Presented by the Management Commission.

RC4 Wireless: #RC4DoesThat - Advanced Applications for Wireless Lighting and Motion Control
Did you know you can do animatronics with RC4 Wireless dimmers? Yes -- they can position servo motors, control DC motors, turn pumps on and off, and a whole lot more. These little boxes can also synthesize AC waves to ring telephones, and light EL wire. Patented RC4 Custom Pixel Profiles brings sophisticated pixel control to costumes, props, and more, using fewer DMX channels without depending on canned effects. There isn't much an RC4 Wireless dimmer can't do. Which is why we say: You Dream It, We Do It. #RC4DoesThat.

How to think about Accessibility for Costumes
Accessibility in the costume areas is not just about table heights and clear paths. Accessibility is a commitment to think and ask questions about making a better workplace for all. In this combination of a talk, Q & A and discussion, Betty Siegel,Director of VSA and Accessibility for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, costume designer for opera, and passionate advocate for accessibility in the arts will speak about how to think about accessibility, how to have conversations and dialogue about accessibility issues and challenges, and steps to take to begin to speak to accessibility in the costume areas of flitting rooms, labs, shops, storage, backstage and classrooms.

Theatre has as many forms as there are human traditions of living life in the world. In the ‘mainstream’, theatre may have gone through many changes and modernizations but in its core, theatre still remains as the entertainment/ celebration of the masses, specific to their region, religion, culture, language, topography and many more aspects. This diversity is the richness of theatre; which has helped theatre survive century after century. On one hand we have popular urban theatre forms well established and almost homogenized in presentation such as Broadway Musicals, Opera, Contemporary Dances, Ballets etc. on the other hand we have highly specific and indigenous theatrical forms such as Chinese Puppets, Indian Jatra and Mobile Theatre, Ramayana of Indonesia, Rituals in Sub-Saharan desert communities, Pabuji Ki Phad (scroll painting narration of western Rajasthan in India), Water Puppets of Bali etc. This panel is conceived and conceptualized with a purpose to bring these forms and styles of design to the forefront, with aims that these alternative practices will inspire the modern generations.

piVot2: The Nucleus of Networking - Creating Masterminds!
Networking, this is a term that we hear all the time in our industry but very few emerging professionals actually know how to execute well. Who do I network with? How do I find these people? What do I ask them? How do I retain this network I want to build? How is this even possible in the time of COVID-19? That is where a Mastermind group can help! In this session you will meet piVot2’s Mastermind Group One –group of industry professionals who have been meeting since AUG 2019. Listen as they share the growth experiences of their monthly interactions with industry players or group brainstorming sessions and the ways this journey has expanded their professional and personal networks while lifting, supporting and creating accountability and trust along the way.

International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE): Passion and Pay: Why Unions Matter
This presentation from the IATSE Education and Training Department addresses a common dilemma that faces designers and technicians as they transition from academic work into trying to make a living in the professional arts and entertainment industry: balancing the gigs they love to do with the need to earn enough to be able to keep doing it and sustain a life-long career. The session provides a brief history of the IATSE and an informative overview of all the different crafts the union represents. Information about what a union is, an examination of how and why unions developed, and a look at what unions accomplish for workers make it clear that the labor movement has relevance for today’s working people. The IATSE is constantly growing and expanding its membership of highly trained crafts people and working with employers to help create and support our industry, as we emerge from the current crisis, and well into the future.

The Politics of Sound: Design in Chile
Presentation by Josefina Cerda Puga on political art in Chile, specifically reflections on the impact that sound design’s emergence has had on current stage practices. Through technical and format modifications, various theatrical companies and artists are exploring new relationships between scene-spectator, which foster the development of listening and dialogue, which, in turn, conflict with the hegemonic visual production models and the economy of the image. This is changing the performance/audience relationship and forcing audiences and practitioners to reconsider sound design from being a decorative, supportive, and illustrative component to the being part of the primary structural matrix shaping a performance. Physics of Theatre - Rigging
Join the authors of the Physics of Theatre - Mechanics, in this latest session in the biannual Physics of Theatre Project. Responsible rigging systems design involves understanding the loads the system will be moving, the velocities and accelerations of those moves, and how the system's design distributes those loads and forces to the cables, ropes, sheaves, and ultimately to the building. In this session, we will explain how to perform these calculations based on foundational principles such as Newton’s Laws of Motion. We will show why design factors work the way they do and how freely-falling loads apply shock loads to the system. We will discuss how the ANSI 1.4-1 rigging standard both informs and is informed by these calculations. While this session will assume a general understanding of rigging systems and vocabulary, no prior knowledge of physics is necessary. We will explain the algebra and basic trigonometry involved. 1.5 ETCP renewal credits.

Performing Arts Venue Design for a New Generation
The Millennial Generation has notoriously disrupted consumer industries across the board and around the world. Millennials are the largest group within the labor market, but Generation X will remain a powerful influence – and a reliable source of consumer dollars – for many years to come. As a result, performing arts organizations are facing a generational gap: appealing to those who are currently their biggest donor base while at the same time attracting younger audiences who will sustain them into the future. Some performing arts organizations have had success with offerings like social media-friendly performances, interactive experiences, and performances focused on subjects of greater interest to Millennials. Programmatic offerings alone often cannot bridge the gap alone. Organizations must supplement performance programming with other initiatives. This is where design can offer a solution. This session will expand on an article published in FM Magazine in March 2019. 1 LU Credit Presented by the Architecture Commission

Offstage Intimacy Best Practices for Navigating the Intimacy of Costuming
The relatively new specialization of intimacy direction comes out of the desire to maintain physical and emotional safety for all performers. In the era of Me Too and Times Up, intimacy direction guidelines are continuing to develop through burgeoning groups, organizations, and individual practitioners. Collectively as panelists, we are costume designers, intimacy choreographers, directors, actors, puppeteers, and graduates of the MFA program at the University of Idaho. Predominantly, though, we are educators in university theater departments and see the need to review our processes in light of this work and the importance of these conversations in our daily interactions with students and colleagues. We will discuss the reframing of some foundational ideas behind intimacy choreography and propose ways to apply them practically to the costuming field.

Welfare at Work, Health and safety for assistants and designers in and out of the studio
As the industry continues to examine our culture, timelines, working conditions, and equity, who pays the price in an industry that is dominated by low oversight working environments, as well as perceived (and actual) power imbalances? The once inspiring call to action that “the show MUST go on” has been twisted as a means of exploiting the desire of young people to get into the business. Over the course of this session, a diverse panel of designers and educators representing Scenery, Sound, Projection, Lighting, and Costume, design will speak with early career artists about how we have been asked to be producing partners in shows, paying for them with our mental, physical, and emotional health. Through recognizing and naming these symptoms of an unhealthy culture our group can begin to understand what we have inadvertently built and upheld, including: the lapse in health and safety training for studio products and procedures, perceived lack of agency within relationship dynamics, and/or surrendered agency for fear of retaliation or reputation which governs unhealthy choices, internships, and reasonable work hours and conditions as the exception rather than the rule. We aim to bare witness to testimonies of follies and failures from designers and assistants, to foster a conversation about how we will create a more equitable, respectful, and safe culture moving into the future. Engineering Diversity
Most of us believe in diversity. In a professional setting, most companies are embracing the value that a diverse workforce brings to the health and prosperity of their organizations. Yet, how can we truly be inclusive if many of our own biases are unconscious? This session seeks to discuss a systematic approach of bringing people from a diverse background to the table. Join us as we share and learn how to surpass bias and "engineer" our way toward becoming individuals, teams, and organizations who work together to further equality for all. Presented by the Engineering Commission

Pushing Road Cases During a Pandemic
The many perils of the COVID-19 pandemic include the obvious, such as how to safely perform tasks that normally require working closely with other humans, as well as how to talk to people who seem incapable of wearing a face covering correctly. This session will distinguish the difficult from the merely annoying, and suggest ways to handle both. Presented by the Safety & Health CommissionSpeaker(s): Steven Adelman

System Tuning & Workflow: Get Creative FASTER
What's the goal of system tuning? Are the goals: spectral and frequency balanced system with minimal SPL deviation across the audience geometry? Or an optimized frequency contour with balanced low and high-frequency capabilities? The dynamic response, high intelligibility? We can answer these questions with various tools to obtain system tuning objectively and effectively. Understanding these tools will let you know how close you are to achieving a goal and declaring success. Join L-Acoustics team members Marcus Ross, Director of Application Projects, and Jordan Tani, Application Engineer, for an online demonstration. They will explore different tuning and calibration system approaches using an L-Acoustics P1 processor with the integrated measurement suite M1. Discover what tuning is precisely, and obtain various tips and tricks to tune and calibrate with more efficiency and speed.

Risky Business Resources: Safer Mistakes: Lessons from the Oops and Phew!
In this session we will explore how accepting the inevitability of mistakes during our work can lead us to safer answers. Instead of wishing for better humans we can build systems that provide better support. People get distracted, they get tired, they get excited or scared. Understanding and accepting that can lead to safer mistakes.

Black Beauty in Media, Theater & Film
The presentation will delve into the historic overview of how Black people's body persona has been negatively manipulated and appropriated in the United States culture and within the arts. Both the male and female body will be discussed, with emphasis placed on the Black female body due to the societal scrutiny it has endured since the time of slavery. The presentation will provide the the historical context on where the negative personas originated and will discuss the stereotypes that persist today. Vincent Lighting Systems: A Collision of Light - Video & Theatre
During this webinar, Ellen Licitra demonstrates how video and theatre look at lighting differently and how theatrical lighting designers and directors need to rethink their view toward lighting when recording live theatre lighting to incorporate both the camera eye and the audience eye. Ellen attended Ohio University and finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Youngstown State University. She continues to light shows in community theatres throughout the Northeast Ohio region where she has won (5) YACTA awards. She currently works as the Rigging Project Manager at VLS after many years in the lighting project and sales departments. Special thanks to The Youngstown Playhouse for lending us their space for this production!

Because That’s Where the Tools Are: What Happens When a Production Space Becomes a Makerspace?
In the last decade, the makerspace has become a “must have” for every institution, including K-12, post-secondary, and civic educational institutions. This trend is driven by the wide availability of digital fabrication tools, access to online instruction, and renewed emphasis on hands-on, experiential learning and STEM curriculum. Though the challenges and opportunities of establishing makerspaces in school libraries has been well documented, maker-centered activities are both influencing the operations of existing theatrical production spaces and the design of new spaces. This panel will discuss how traditional, purpose-built production shops can accommodate maker-centered activities and how new spaces might be configured to better support both uses while also acknowledging areas of incompatibility and resultant tradeoffs. 1 LU Credit Presented by the Architecture Commission

Civic Leadership and Advocacy for Government Support of the Arts
As artists, we have a civic responsibility to the community that we serve. Advocacy in the arts doesn't stop with the shows a theatre selects or the mission a theatre follows. Instead, advocacy must involve a call to action to leadership on the local, state, and federal levels. We will explore a brief outline of what arts managers can do to advocate the value of our work and have an impact on civic topics using our most fundamental resource, storytelling. Creating Imitation Stained Glass
Imitating stained glass presents a particular set of challenges for scenic artists. Scenics are tasked with finding a means of reproducing that beautiful and magical marriage of color and light that is the essence of all real-world stained glass. The decisions of which products to sample and which techniques to try are often influenced by questions of time, budget, and practicality. This workshop presents some of the challenges of imitation stained glass and a wide range of creative solutions. Presented by the Scene Design & Technology Commission

Building an Inclusive Classroom Space
Creating inclusive learning environments is essential to welcoming everyone into our field. This panel discussion will present methods and topics from a variety of design and technology educators who work to open our classrooms and curricula to create spaces that feel inclusive and welcoming. We'll share our resources for anti-racist and anti-sexist environments, discuss how we create room and represent our LGBTQ+ students, introduce inclusive language and how it should be used in classrooms, and tackle thoughts about class and costs. This discussion will lead into methods for creating curricula and classrooms that are based on inclusive values and discuss how to get your students involved. We'll also share our thoughts about strategies that work to decolonize the classroom and disrupt white supremacist institutional organization. And to model our values, we'll open the floor to hear from y'all. Presented by the Education Commission.

Their*Story: Examining Inclusive, Equitable & Diverse Practices In Dress History
This Session examines inclusive practices in costume, dress and fashion studies, both historical and contemporary. Not only "his"story and "her"story, but "their"story and "our"story. This research can help costume designers and fellow theatre artists create more equitable and diverse designs, focusing on color-conscious casting and characterization and equitable representation of the clothing of marginalized groups. Diversity in dress history is a cutting edge field; traditional dress history has focused heavily on Western European art, but we can broaden our horizons to include a wider range of society. Waiting around the corner of many famous paintings are subjects of color, non-western subjects and LGBTQ subjects. This session dives into a circular way of looking at history. Research would focus on a society or culture as a whole, a circle, and look at the totality of it’s members, rather than at the most famous or most wealthy at the top of a pyramid.

Puddles to Pools: Using Water on Stage
A director’s delusion? A designer’s dream? A technician’s ultimate challenge? Whether it’s a bathtub or an ocean or a steady downpour, some texts have water built into the world and some have water effects thrust upon them. Audiences love the unexpected, so if it works it is always a WOW. This session will share a variety of created experiences – dampness to drowning – and will discuss what to do (and what not to do) to bring H2O to the stage safely and effectively.

Do you use excel or Google sheets to track expenses, prepare budgets, or organize/ analyze/ report on other small sets of data? The goal of this session is to demonstrate some best practices for spreadsheet organization and expose users to advanced functions that will enable them to wrangle small data sets into useful information. The session will also highlight some useful new functions available only in Google sheets. Because this is a class intended for advanced users, attendees should be familiar with creating formulas, and using basic functions in spreadsheets. Attendees will have access to an excel sample spreadsheet, and a Google sheet, each of which demonstrates the tools being discussed. Attendees are encouraged to download the samples prior to the session. Everything can be done on either a MAC or a PC. Speaker(s): David Holcomb Shaminda Amarakoon Ryan Gastelum Mary Jean Sedlock

Well Being Hour - Cardio Kick Boxing
For each day of the virtual conference, we have curated an hour dedicated to movement and mindfulness. In a typical year, attendees spend a lot of time traveling from session to session in and around the conference center. The virtual format led us to dedicate time to encouraging folks to take an hour to move around, stretch and focus their minds. For the first 30 minutes we’ll get you heart moving, then slow things down for meditation and stretching in the last 30 minutes. We have activities such as cardio kick boxing, fitness dancing, yoga, meditation, and tech table stretches. Watch for specific offerings, each day, throughout the week. https://youtu.be/QV-hV2qtwds

Don't Forget The Art! Combining Artistry And Technology In Design Education
In an increasingly technology-heavy environment, how do we teach both the artistry of design and how to use the equipment needed to produce it? The complexity of lighting and sound consoles, scenery automation, and other design challenges have made our productions look amazing but have come at a cost. How do we teach students to use the tools and equipment available to them while merging their educational experience in design and aesthetics with programming, networking, and coding? Fiber Reinforced Plastics: Means and Methods in Today’s Entertainment Universe
Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) has become an ever important tool in our current entertainment and theatrical production universe. Its low weight and high strength make it a great building material for complex sculptural shapes, large architectural features, as well as traditional theatrical uses such as masks and props. From laminate composition, resin choice, gelcoat or not, to the need to add FR or other additives, there is a huge menu of options from which to choose. Each of these choices drives cost, fabrication time, and safety protocols. Without the proper training, FRP fabrication can be dangerous and fail as a fabrication process. This panel will attempt to provide a 1000ft view of the why, when, and how of FRP fabrication, in order to spur further conversations at all levels of production on the proper and safe methods of FRP fabrication. Wanted: Cultural Rights Defenders; Accessibility in Performing Arts
Have you considered your role in creating cultural experiences and spaces that embrace human and civil rights for people of all ages with disabilities? This session is going to explore historical, social, legal, and technology trends in accessibility that create interesting challenges for theatres invested in inclusion and access. It will also engage you in a discussion on why accessibility matters in the arts, what the current logistical requirements are for arts facilities, and smart strategies for planning to reach compliance. You will leave with a sense of how your values are embedded in the bricks and mortar of our civic and cultural spaces and how you, too, can be a cultural rights defender. Space Transformations: What does Venue Flexibility Look Like
Performances spaces often need to accommodate multiple performance types (music, dance, and theatre) that have conflicting technical and acoustic requirements. As space and construction dollars are at a premium, more than ever, institutions are looking to combine programs into one performance space, while utilizing minimal labor and time to change over the space from one program to another. This session looks at two project case studies on college campuses that incorporate easy-to-use technologies and systems to accommodate these different needs. 1 LU Credit Presented by the Architecture Commission
