Know Better! Do Better!: Little Things Matter
This session will look through the lens of trauma-informed schools, social-emotional learning, and the often taken-for-granted “little things that matter” to raise awareness and responsive practices to one of the top two causes of premature death of our youth: Suicide. The session will offer an interactive environment while allowing participants to learn about signs of suicide, neuroscience, social-emotional learning, responsive practices and how to know and do better. You will leave with a plan to implement trauma-informed practices in your classroom, school or district.

How Leaders Create a Culture of Continuous Improvement Using Focus Teams and SREB’s Problem-Solving Process
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: PREPAID REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATIONSchools can rise or fall depending on the type of improvement culture they foster: Do stakeholders have a voice in planning and decision-making, or do they feel like changes are being imposed upon them? When the school community is engaged in analyzing problems, developing plans, establishing goals and monitoring progress together, teachers and leaders truly own school improvement efforts — leading to greater buy-in and success. Participants in this workshop will learn how to engage well-organized and empowered focus teams in developing strong plans to reinvent education in ways that can address inequity, poverty, weak infrastructures and the social and emotional health of students and teachers.Speaker(s): Judy Frank Allyson Morgan

Orientation to the Elementary Schools That Work (ESTW) Framework - Repeat Session
Grounded in our Making Schools Work approach to school improvement, SREB's Elementary Schools That Work framework is based upon the belief that to improve student success, schools should focus on changing school and classroom practices in ways that motivate students to put forth greater effort. Like other SREB frameworks, Elementary Schools That Work is based on a set of 10 research-based Key Practices that high-performing schools utilize as the foundation for their improvement process. This session will provide participants with • an overview of SREB's Elementary Schools That Work 10 Key Practices and how they align with other SREB frameworks to create a seamless approach to continuous improvement, • data and lessons learned from pilot schools,• how to utilize SREB's problem-solving process to uncover problems and find solutions based on the Elementary Key Practices, • and team time to network around problems of practice. This session is for any district and/or elementary school team wanting to learn more about utilizing the elementary framework and for districts and school teams that want to add the Elementary Schools That Work framework to their existing SREB suite of secondary frameworks for an aligned approach to continuous improvement.

Tried and True: Great Recipes to Build Literacy with a Technology Twist
With any good recipe, you need accurate measurements and quality ingredients! The same is true when building literacy skills across the curriculum. National data shows a significant decline in fourth-grade reading scores between 2019 and 2022 in 30 states/jurisdictions. For 33 states/jurisdictions, a decline was also significant for eighth graders. As educators, how do we address the reading crisis? In this session, attendees will learn effective strategies that increase student engagement, encourage collaboration, integrate technology and use student data. This approach will enable all learners to experience academic success in literacy. Join the session to take home a secret ingredient that you can implement in your class without delay.

Reading for Meaning: Strategies for All Students
To improve as readers and be ready for higher-level learning, students must be able to use keys to unlock a text. Participants will learn how to use strategies and tools such as summarizing, predicting, inferring, analyzing, comparing, determining word meaning, and other techniques to help students increase comprehension. My approach engages students in repeated daily practice using a wide variety of texts. By following the steps in the daily and weekly review, students are able to move concepts into long-term memory. Participants, whether they will be interacting with their students in person, online, or a combination of the two, will work through an actual lesson and leave with handouts that include easy-to-implement activities and sample lessons.

Welcoming Refugees and Newcomers Through Equitable Education
By 2025, one in four U.S. public school students will be English language learners. But for refugee and newcomer students who have little or no prior school experience, assigning them to age-appropriate, mainstream classrooms is not equitable education. In 2022, Bowling Green Independent Schools in Kentucky partnered with Fugees Family, Inc. to launch a newcomer program called Teranga Academy, from the Sengalese word for hospitality and community. The Fugees model emphasizes holistic English acquisition, a trauma-informed approach to education, and uses the universal language of soccer as an educational tool. Learn how Teranga Academy provides a support system to prepare teenage newcomers for high school and beyond. Students are enrolled in competency-based courses aligned with the district's curriculum to learn foundational skills before mainstreaming and progressing to earning a high school diploma.

An Effective Relationship Between the Community and School: Changing the Culture of the Home
Take a journey with GPS and Midfield City Schools (Alabama) as they bridge the gap between the community and school relationships. The GPS Parental Engagement Program Party to Achieve is a culturally-based program that utilizes an empowerment curriculum to guide and support intentional conversations about current challenges facing urban parents. We help parents with key principles to drive change in both parents and students. Daily presence in school has a huge impact on a student's academic success, and GPS works to ensure that every student attends school regularly and on time. Even as children grow older and more independent, families can continue to play a key role in ensuring students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is important for success in school and life.

JEFCOED Signature Academies: A District Approach to Preparing Students for Life
The Jefferson County Alabama Educational Opportunities leadership team shares how their district designed and implemented a signature academy at each of their 13 high schools and 6 elementary schools. From setting a vision to planning along with facility upgrades, JEFCOED opened all 19 signature academies in the fall of 2022. The redesign began as a vision to expand educational opportunities across the district by providing quality pathways and experiences that are accessible to each student. These opportunities provide real-world, hands-on learning connected to specific career pathways. Students will have the opportunity to earn industry credentials, job-shadowing opportunities, dual enrollment credit, early college and internships through signature academy programs. Presenters will share the development of the strategic plan, implementation process plans, evaluation metrics and lessons learned from their first year.

Leveraging Student Engagement with Navigating the Workforce
Career awareness exploration and navigation provide opportunities for us to bridge the work students do in the classroom, shop and lab to the workplace. This session will provide options for creating assignments that align duties, responsibilities and qualities of any occupation to personal, workplace and technical skills grounded in academics. Additionally, this session provides a framework for facilitating work journals and simulated interviews where students learn to advocate for themselves to build a “sought-after” mindset as they move through the workforce. This session provides practices that students will carry with them over a lifetime in an ever-changing work environment.

Systems of Support: Family Engagement that Motivates Teachers and Enhances Student Learning
When faced with Covid-closures and remote learning requirements, Washington County Schools (KY) recognized the need to collaborate closely with students’ first and closest teachers. Engaging family members to better support student learning became a focus for the entire district, prompting a strategic alignment of priorities, vision, professional learning and leadership. During this session, Washington County Schools superintendent will share the district’s story of enhancing family engagement with the support of NCFL and the Kentucky Family Friendly Schools resources. Participants will have the opportunity to consider the alignment between Dr. Anthony Bryk’s improvement science and Dr. Karen Mapp’s Dual-Capacity Framework for Family-School Partnerships as they analyze their own schools’ family engagement practices and consider the next steps leading toward an action plan that engages families, motivates teachers and promotes student success.

Explicit Vocabulary Instruction
Research shows that children's vocabulary in early grades is directly related to reading comprehension in upper grades. Vocabulary is an integral part of receptive and expressive language. Direct vocabulary instruction is imperative for improving students' background knowledge and comprehension of academic content. Explicit vocabulary instruction is an effective, evidenced-based practice in all content-area classes. This type of instruction teaches students strategies for deciphering the meaning of new words, resulting in stronger independent reading skills due to an improved ability to construct the meaning of a text. This session will focus on strategies to intentionally select vocabulary words, a four-step model to explicitly teach vocabulary in all content areas, vocabulary practice procedures and word-learning strategies.

Building Supportive Relationships: "Every Child Deserves a Champion"
Research tells us over and over that students learn best, are more successful and are more likely to reach their full potential when their basic needs are met. How can we as educators support students in fulfilling these needs within the school setting? Building supportive relationships with all students is vital. An effective advisory program can develop a nurturing, supportive climate conducive to building adult relationships that make connections with all students. In this session, you will receive resources and tools to design and implement effective advisory programs. There will also be an opportunity to share with and hear from your peers about their successful practices. Come join us as we “champion our children.” Speaker(s): Cena Davis Philippa Whitfield

Shifting the Culture and Climate Post COVID-19
Long before the pandemic first shuttered America's schools in the spring of 2020, students from historically marginalized communities already faced challenges in accessing basic educational resources — from well-trained, well-paid teachers and staff to adequate buildings and books. For these students, there was already a crisis of educational opportunity, a crisis that COVID-19 appears to have made worse. This session will explore how to build, shift and sustain a diverse culture that will help close the achievement and discipline gap while promoting cultural competence among staff and students. Participants will be challenged, encouraged and motivated and will leave with skills and strategies to help shift their school or district's culture and climate.

Why Your SEL Isn’t Working (and What to Do About It)
Our students need social-emotional learning that is meaningful; yet the majority of U.S. schools still do not have an SEL program. For those that do, it is often not implemented with fidelity or lacks cultural relevance. In this workshop, educators will be provided with evidence-based, practical strategies, procedures and resources for developing the social and emotional competency of all students. Attendees will be able to engage students of all races and socio-economic backgrounds in meaningful activities to share, critically analyze, problem-solve and overcome traumatic experiences, misinformation, negative feelings and beliefs so they can navigate life successfully.

Blended Learning Environments: Effective Web-Based Teaching and Learning for K-12
This workshop will discuss best practices in online instruction. The pandemic has shown us that education is no longer a one-stop shop when it comes to reaching our students. Gone are the days of receiving a quality education only inside of a brick-and-mortar location. Passport to Your Future: Maximizing Student Engagement in CTE and Elective Programs
At Nitro High School, all ninth-grade students are enrolled in the “Discover Your Future” course. The course engages students in primers for each of the school's career and technical education (CTE) and elective programs in three-week increments. Rotating students through CTE and elective programs early in their high school careers exposes them to potential new interests. The goal is to help every student find a motivating niche that ignites a passion for learning and growing for the duration of their high school education, positively impacting student enrollment in CTE, student test scores and graduation rates. The session will focus on outcomes of the “Discover Your Future” program, including metrics for academic success, student satisfaction, parent and teacher feedback and administrative observations about implementation.

Rock Your Writing: How to Improve Student Writing
This session focuses on improving student writing and is best suited for elementary and middle school teachers, as well as instructional coaches. In this interactive session, we will explore the writing process together, with technology woven throughout the activities. We will begin with how to write a good sentence. We will practice “sentence stretching,” where details are added to a sentence to expand the sentence and give it meaning. Next, we will discuss using interesting vocabulary and putting to rest “boring words.” A document will be shared with synonyms for commonly overused words. After that, I will demonstrate how to write a good introduction and conclusion. We will discuss informational essays, opinion writing and extended response questions. In addition, graphic organizers will be shared that will allow students to structure their writing. Finally, some engaging fun writing prompts will be shared with participants.

Supporting Teachers with Implementing Feedback
Coaching can support teachers and improve their pedagogical practices. Instructional leaders can increase the scope of their supervision by learning how to define and apply successful coaching techniques. Teachers can acquire strategies and techniques for making the most of their coaching experience by reflecting on how they interpreted the coaching feedback they received and creating action plans to implement the feedback. In this session, participants will examine methods for increasing the return on investment from coaching at their schools as well as strategies for making sure they act upon and assess progress in light of coaching input. Heron's categories of intervention will also be presented, as well as a research-based framework for instructional coaching.

Academies in High Schools. Partnering with SREB to use the Academy Model for School Improvement
Discussing different methods used to academize high school cohorts. Starting with the 9th grade, slowly integrating the practice into the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, and using the academies to integrate common planning, PBL and academic initiatives into your school building. With smaller learning communities, students feel a sense of belonging and are grouped by common interests. At PSLA @ Fowler High School, 9th-grade students were academized by their CTE Pathways. The different pathways are made up of three academies. Entrepreneurship, First Responder and Homeland Security. The academy model allowed all academy teachers to have common planning to discuss the needs of students. While implementing academies, we were also able to have students complete PBL projects discussing their CTE Pathways. Our first-year results were extremely positive, and we are academizing our 10th and 11th-grade students for the 2023-2024 school year.

Digital Badges and Career Pathways: How All Students Can Demonstrate the "Vision of a Graduate"
Schools across the country are defining the “vision of a graduate,” outlining the skills and knowledge expected of every student who walks across the stage. Digital Badges allow students to demonstrate those critical skills while letting students show their strengths. Students earn badges by submitting a portfolio of their best work. Each completed badge is then exported to a digital backpack so students can show their accomplishments to employers, or as part of college admissions and scholarship applications. In this interactive session, participants will learn about developing digital badges. We will focus on three essential questions: 1) What skills and habits should students in a pathway achieve? 2) What student projects and assignments demonstrate those skills? 3) How can students express their strengths and personal growth? Participants will learn how to build badges and walk away with an action plan for implementing portfolios and digital badges.

Making Soft Skills Stick: Six Measurable Ways to Positively Impact Student Behavior
Have you ever been drawn into an infomercial? The product they are selling is guaranteed to solve all your problems and simplify your life. Sometimes, the product does not live up to the hype! That can be said of soft skills training, if not done in an impactful way. Students need to practice soft skills to bring about real lasting change. During the session, you will learn and participate in a hands-on activity that teaches an understanding of employment basics, which you can then take back to your classroom. We will provide practical scenarios focused on professionalism, critical thinking and problem-solving as they relate to behavior styles. We will also explore case studies demonstrating real growth and change in students highlighting a hybrid approach to teaching soft skills. Join us to learn six measurable techniques to change students’ behavior in the classroom, and to prepare them for the workplace.

An Introduction to SREB’s Powerful Student Support Practices
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: PREPAID REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATIONSREB's Powerful Student Support Practices provide schools and districts with a vision for a comprehensive effort to support student success. These practices can be used as guidelines for a schoolwide student advisement effort that helps students develop self-advocacy, explore career options and connect to their broader community. Participants will examine examples of artifacts and sets of behaviors that are found — across students, teachers, counselors and administrators — when these practices are in place. We will engage in activities and discussions around each of the practices, including an interactive Padlet that participants can continue to access when they return to their schools.Speaker(s): Aimee Wyatt Erin Anderson-Williams Philippa Whitfield

Building a School Culture that Shines … Yes, It’s Possible!
Imagine a school where every student and staff member knows who they truly are and why they matter — where they can contribute to their successes and those of the school community. It all starts when staff use the SHINE self-awareness framework to focus on their Strengths, Hobbies, Interests, Irritants, Needs and unique life Experiences (SHINE) to cultivate a happy and fulfilled life, professionally and personally. Participants will learn how intentional decision-making and aligned planning can build such a culture and will discover how to foster students' self-discovery, self-confidence and efficacy as a means for spreading SHINE in their communities. This session is guaranteed to bring positivity and excitement for spreading SHINE at the conference and beyond.

Creating a Culture of Care by Taking an I-CORT Stance: A Promising Theory of Practice for New Teachers
New teachers are expected to figure out how to survive classroom management challenges and daily interactions with administrators, colleagues and parents — yet minimal attention often is given to these interactions during pre-service experiences. Many teacher preparation programs emphasize theoretical components and lack the key components that can improve a teacher's practice and student learning. Here, participants will be introduced to elements of invitational education (IE), which can provide a beneficial framework for new teachers entering the diverse and complex field of education. As an inclusive model of communication and human relations, IE implies a belief system that embraces, celebrates and honors diversity.

Creating Culturally Relevant Math Tasks: Not as Hard as You Think
Many math teachers have the desire to use culturally relevant tasks but simply don’t know where to start. Being a culturally relevant teacher means using instructional materials in ways that help students see themselves as doers of mathematics and help them overcome the negative stereotypes and messages regarding who is — and isn’t — mathematically smart. In this session, participants will learn how to work from Stage 1 tasks up to Stage 4 tasks, giving themselves the time and space they need to learn, grow, adapt and respond to the needs of their students.

Developing and Implementing a Holocaust Curriculum for Middle and Secondary Students
This session will provide educators with ideas on how to present Holocaust materials effectively to their classes and allow educators to establish educational connections with others in this field of study. Participants will consider what they may need to start and continue a curriculum for this course of study, from scratch, and will gain strategies for guiding meaningful conversations with their students and helping them draw comparisons between past and current events. Participants will also learn about "must-cover" topics and what to avoid during this study.

Do You Question Your Questions? An Exploration of Ways to Generate Intentional and Effective Questions
Asking the right questions can lead to a learning environment that facilitates productive struggle and helps students to make sense of mathematics. In this session, we will explore questioning strategies used in formative assessment lessons to check for students' mathematics understanding and misconceptions while connecting to research from Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching to Inform Instructional Quality and The Math Pact. Participants will reflect on their instructional practice and explore a framework that promotes mathematical thinking and reasoning. Participants also will practice transforming traditional questions into tasks that promote high cognitive demand using reversibility, flexibility and generalization at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Smart Strategies for Financially Savvy Youth
Achieving financial well-being as an adult is about more than how much money you make or whether you’re able to do your taxes, balance your accounts or pay your bills. It’s about having control over your money and being able to make choices that allow you to enjoy life. In this session, review financial literacy activities that you can incorporate in your classroom and find ideas to share with your colleagues. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) offers a variety of K-12 teaching resources on consumerfinance.gov that make it easy to incorporate financial literacy activities to teach students the skills they need to understand personal finance and assess how well they have attained the building blocks of youth financial capability — no matter what subject you teach.

Teach Better, Work Less: Using Eduprotocol Instructional Frames in the Secondary Classroom
SOLD OUT
Eduprotocols are adaptive lesson frames (protocols) that can be used in any content area. They encourage the four Cs: communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. Once students learn the basic frame, the teacher can adapt it to the content. This means students spend more time on actual content than on how to complete the lesson. Eduprotocols allow for differentiation through Universal Design. Eduprotocols align with Dr. Robert Marzano's research and Dr. Sonny Magana's T3 Framework for Innovation.

The E before the E’s
SOLD OUT
Exploring college and career options commonly known today as the E for ME (education, enlistment or employment) is critical as we prepare our scholars for postsecondary options. Many times these conversations begin once the scholar enters high school; and too often, the conversations are overwhelming and too late. Current data provides evidence that often we are graduating students on time, but they are unprepared for certain career pathways. Our district implemented a strategic district-wide career and college readiness plan that includes the key components of district-wide (K-12) guidance meetings and a business advisory council. This session will share how we created and integrated an awareness of career readiness into our middle school curriculum. All scholars in grades six through eight participate in weekly lessons and have speakers on "Future Fridays." The E (exposure) before the E’s will ensure our scholars are prepared for the conversation and beyond.

Layers of Support
At Stewarts Creek High School, students know that “practice” (assignments) must always be turned in and completed well, and teachers are focused on giving quality assignments and grades that reflect learning. Drawing from Power of ICU principles, Dr. Clark Harrell will explain how ICU is a foundational part of the school's culture, with students receiving multiple layers of support. These layers have led to many academic successes of SCHS students, from graduation rates above 95% to individual victories with formerly apathetic learners.
