This two-session series focuses on recent advances in rehabilitation and injury biomechanics. Multiple model system studies investigate the use of small and large animal models, human subjects and cell-based approaches. Biomechanics in Cell and Tissue Engineering
This session focuses on recent advances in the biomechanics of cell and tissue engineering. Particular emphasis includes the study of extracellular matrix molecules, including elastin and collagen. Microfluidic Engineering for Biomedical Applications
Microfluidics enables a multitude of biomedical applications. This session starts with an invited presentation by Dr. Susan Leggett in which she will discuss her tumor-on-chip model to study the impact of spatial heterogeneity on breast tumor development. Following this, we will hear a contributed talk on a complementary microfluidic model of the breast tumor environment. Additional talks will highlight the use of microfluidics in multiple platforms: a human liver model to study hepatitis infection, a device for multi-drug combination screening for leukemia, a drop-based device for investigating antimicrobial susceptibility, and a device using patterned omniphobic coatings to study antibiotic combinations.

Micro/Nano Tools for Precision Medicine
Micro- and nanoscale tools are critical to achieving the promise of precision medicine. This session kicks off with an invited talk from Dr. Adam Higgins in which he will describe his collaborative work to develop a microfluidic system for blood processing in newborns with hyperbilirubinemia. Following, this, we will hear contributed talks that describe novel tools for disease diagnosis and treatment: nanocrystals for treating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, biomarker quantification using a hydrogel microneedle-based assay, nanofibers for the treatment of aortic aneurysms, a magnetic nanoparticle-based ELISA, and microparticles for immunomodulatory drug delivery.

Molecular sensors and nanodevices can be used as critical tools in diagnostic and biomedical imaging applications. This session kicks off with an invited presentation in which Dr. Jessica Winter will discuss the use of nanoparticles in cancer diagnostics. Following, this, we will hear three contributed talks that cover various sensing strategies: cell-based sensors with dual reporting systems, electronic transduction of immunobinding to resistance using gold nanoparticle modified surfaces, and nucleic acid-based melt curve analysis.

Spatially Resolved Cellular and Multicellular Systems
Understanding organ and tissue-scale mechanisms of disease is dependent on the technical and analytical ability to interrogate cell-type specific processes and cell-cell interactions in the biomedical system of interest. The advances in high-resolution spatial analysis and single cell analytics have enabled an unprecedented view of the molecular and cellular components of organs and tissues, with matched systems biology methods for unpacking the tissue-scale heterogeneity into the constituent cellular networks and mechanisms. This session will highlight state of the art methods for analysis of spatially resolved cellular and multicellular systems spanning a range of technologies across multiplex imaging, single cell transcriptomics and metabolomics, with applications in cancer and developmental biology.
