Organizing Ourselves for Instructional Equity: A Case Study
Persistent race-based patterns in student learning outcomes confirm that our system is inequitable by design. But how do we begin to recognize and reform the ways our schools keep Black and brown students from getting what they need to become powerful learners? Come learn how the Hyde Park Central School District has organized itself to "learn its way" toward more equitable schools. By working together in cross-role inquiry teams to interrogate patterns of instructional inequity, teachers, school and district administrators, students, family members, and school board members are supported to look both inward and outward as they work to identify what is needed and coordinate their efforts to make necessary changes happen in the system. Participants will pair up to practice key components of the process and leave with resources and references they can use to mobilize their own stakeholders in cross-role collaborative inquiry.

How to Manage Staff Emotions
Handling the emotions of adults can be one of the more intense challenges school leaders face. The pandemic stressed even the most competent of educators. As our staff returns, they bring with them unprocessed emotions that will significantly impact how they approach students and teaching, and parents have pent-up frustrations that will impact the way they interact with our school community and leaders. This session aims to prepare leaders for the emotional intensity that follows a global crisis by providing participants with strategies for neutralizing intense emotional situations, tips on holding space for others while processing our own emotions, and steps that emotionally resilient leaders implement, such as managing the "Emotional Triad, the three forces that control your emotions—your physiology, your language, and your focus.

Creating Learning Teams for a Collaborative Leadership Culture
In our demanding and fast-paced world, it can be easy to neglect the development of our leaders, who must continuously shape a culture that promotes efficacy and collaboration. Strategies succeed when we create the space for the ongoing study of the principal leadership that develops key influencers, hardens belief systems, and shapes culture for true collaboration. The Bethel School District has devised a replicable formula that organizes principals into collaborative learning teams for the ongoing study of this kind of leadership. Session attendees will learn about the importance and complexity of a continuous focus on leadership development. Attendees will also become prepared to emulate experiences that helped team leaders design and facilitate leadership study sessions and learn how the structure supports participant engagement, personal reflection, and application. Tier, Coach, Grow: The S.I.M.P.L.E. Framework to Support Teachers
Instructional leaders (i.e., coaches, principals, and teacher-leaders) work with teachers to improve students' educational outcomes. Our roles in instructional coaching can be overwhelming, especially since students and teachers have lost a year of full academic instruction. The question we face is: Where do we begin to help teachers and students to make true instructional gains? In this session, instructional leaders will gain access to the S.I.M.P.L.E. framework, a comprehensive blueprint for coaching that outlines the most crucial components of instructional coaching and how to provide differentiated support for teachers. The S.I.M.P.L.E. framework provides quick strategies for identifying teacher needs, tips for developing a coaching plan, and strategies to use with teachers for support. Both brand new and tenured coaches will walk away with a clear and achievable vision for making a difference in the classroom using the S.I.M.P.L.E. framework.

Blame the Messenger: Avoiding Communication Mistakes
How often has a great idea been undermined by a mediocre or weak presentation? How often do educational leaders unintentionally hurt staff morale? The sad truth is that many initiatives are DOA and many staff members are put off because of the way the message was designed and/or delivered by the presenter. Most educational leaders have had no instruction in presentation skills, and the resulting ineffective oral communication can be costly. This presentation lays out a framework for building and performing talks for all of the audiences leaders address. Attendees will learn ways to avoid common mistakes, strategies for creating more compelling messages, and tips for delivering engaging, powerful messages.

Resilience Necessary: How the Adaptive Leader Acts for I.M.P.A.C.T
We are living in a time of unprecedented uncertainty, and that is no truer than in the realm of education. When teachers, students, and parents look toward their school and district leaders for some sense of confidence that success is imminent, how does a leader balance personal self-care while ensuring they possess the flexibility, strength, and confidence to pivot and adjust when necessary to make decisions to ensure their school community is progressing?
In this session, participants will learn how an adaptive leader acts for impact through intentional actions that take into account the needs of all stakeholders, including themselves, in their school community. Speaker(s): Erica Battle

Building Family and Community Capacity through Adaptive Leadership
"If you build it, they will come." As a school leader, adapting through consistent changes and challenges are constants that are faced daily. These constants intersect with other complexities. One such complexity is the leader and parent relationship. Creating equitable, high-performing, and safe schools requires a strong leader to strategically partner with all parents. When all parents are strategically embraced as partners within the school community, possibilities for the school are limitless. Leaders that understand the dire importance of this dynamic realize that parental allyship is paramount and creates space for schools to thrive.

The Power of Personal Branding in Education
Here are some of the things they didn’t prepare us for in school. Anxiety, depression, and suicide in youth have increased by over 37% with the release of social media, weakening an already stressed system. 78% of teachers reported feeling exhausted and overwhelmed with over 300,000 teachers leaving the profession. There's a proven link between teacher burnout and student disengagement.
In this session, participants will discover how to rock their campus with this R.O.C.K.S.T.A.R. method that uses personal branding and SEL. The same method that has been used to create many of the biggest young superstars in Hollywood with over 150 million online followers, it focuses on self-awareness, authenticity, and ownership to increase mental health, confidence, involvement, and achievement among educators and students. 3 Steps for Living and Leading More Authentically
There's a lot of research around leadership styles and which one is the "best" or "most effective." But perhaps leadership style isn't nearly as important as being authentic, i.e., staying true to one's self and values regardless of leadership style. A healthy alignment between values and behavior can be re-energizing for work, home, and other activities.
Participants in this interactive session will explore characteristics of authenticity by focusing on self-awareness, core values, and self-reflection. Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms and Leveraging Student Voice
Trauma-sensitive classrooms are more important now than ever as staff and students continue to recover from the trauma of the pandemic. In addition to the pandemic increasing students' sense of isolation and anxiety, it also resulted in a loss of instructional time. Other traumas continue to interfere with instruction including poverty and domestic violence. All students, regardless of age, are in need of trauma-sensitive classrooms to provide a sense of connectedness and predictability in their daily experiences at school.
In this session, attendees will learn research-based, trauma-sensitive instructional practices and strategies to improve student engagement and student outcomes and decrease discipline referrals for all students including students with disabilities, English learners, and BIPOC students. Participants will discover how to program for social-emotional learning by using students’ voice to design meaningful lessons on healthy relationships, racism, identity, self-advocacy, and advocacy for others. Having critical conversations around teacher agency serves multiple purposes. First, in order to create environments where a learner can step into their agency, we must make sure teachers can do the same. Further, teacher agency supports morale and school culture, which is needed to address teacher retention. When teachers feel a sense of autonomy, they are more likely to be intrinsically motivated to innovate in practice to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. Finally, teacher agency supports sustainability in schools. In order for pedagogy to be sustainable and reduce burnout, teachers must feel empowered to make decisions that make their jobs sustainable. The question becomes: What shifts must school and teachers leaders make in order to broaden teacher agency? In this session, school leader participants will identify these elements, reflect on current strengths and challenges, and leave with a brief action plan for making incremental shifts in practice to expand teacher agency.

The Path to Success Is through Deeper Self-Awareness
It is impossible to plot a course from Point A to Point B if we do not understand where Point A is precisely located. We cannot move ourselves forward, let alone an entire school or district if we do not have an acute understanding of who we really are. As a result of attending this session, each participant will:
• leave with a greater understanding of their personality and how it manifests in times of stress and times of success • be able to analyze their current station and begin plotting their next steps to their Point B • evaluate their current behavioral pattern and whether it is helping them get closer to their goals or whether they are blocking their own path Speaker(s): PJ Caposey

Are You Speaking Their "Love" Language?
As teachers are working harder and harder, it's more important than ever to let them know how much they are appreciated. Are you more likely to say thanks by sending a personal note or bringing someone their favorite treat? How someone shows appreciation may be influenced by their personal love language.
Gary Chapman has outlined five ways people show appreciation to colleagues. If we're not speaking multiple love languages, the desire to show thanks to our school community could be lost in the delivery. This session will help participants learn their love languages and understand other forms of love languages to ensure our appreciation is heard loud and clear. Speaker(s): Connie Hamilton

Moving Beyond Equity Hopes: ASCD Equity Audits in Action
Every school district is striving to provide equity and excellence every day for each student. Often the challenge is knowing where to begin your equity journey or having the time to analyze which areas of your district are most in need of growth and development. To support school districts with their tremendously important equity efforts, ASCD has created a new equity audit service. Rather than addressing equity within an individual school or program, ASCD utilizes a unique, research-based approach to provide an equity audit through a district-wide lens. In this brief session we will share key aspects about the design and process recently used in Smithfield Public Schools. Your students, staff, and community do not want you to miss the opportunity to stop by our session to learn and dialogue about how the ASCD Equity Audit can be customized to benefit the equity work in your school district. Leading & Creating Change from Your Archetypal Genius
In this interactive workshop, participants will explore eight educator change archetypes—the Diplomat, Guardian, Champion, Investigator, Storyteller, Sage, Creative, and Inventor—and spend time discussing their own change leadership profiles and practices. Participants will have opportunities to complete unique assessments and protocols that will help them explore how they best lead and create change, as well as how they can protect their own energy and create boundaries while doing so. Lastly, they will have the opportunity to design a personal change story to own their expertise and start leading change based on who they are and how they best lead.

From Evaluation to Evolution: An Integral, Whole-Human Approach to Teacher Development
In this session, participants will explore the concept of evolution, a teacher-centered process for growth based on Ken Wilber’s Integral Map Theory. It utilizes four quadrants: I—the person, We—the community, It—the work, and Its—the work in the world. This teacher-driven, coach-supported process is meant to motivate teachers to capture their learning along the journey toward a goal. In this system, the goal is not the point, the journey is the point. Evolution is meant to increase internal motivation, reduce fear, and build a collaborative culture while supporting a Virtuous Cycle of Growth which emphasizes metacognition, goal setting, and consistent reflection and feedback. Attendees will leave this session with an understanding of the benefits of moving from a summative to an expansive system of teacher development (top-down to bottom-up) with data to support the need for change and the strategies and framework to implement Teacher Evolution—an Integral, Whole-Human Approach to Teacher Development. Leading with Whole Hearts and Grounded Confidence
Follow Brené Brown? Then you'll love this session. Teaching and leading can be brutally hard work, especially in uncertain and challenging times. When we are called to teach, it is usually because we have found our sense of passion and purpose. Because we give so much to teaching and learning, we can deplete our energy at the expense of our own health and well-being. With this in mind, it is important that we understand and appreciate living a balanced life. Grounded confidence comes when we know our purpose, lean into our values, establish clear boundaries, and then layer in a sense of curiosity and continuous learning.
This session will focus on building an awareness of living a whole-hearted and balanced life while following our passion for teaching and leading. We will be using the combined research from Dr. Brené Brown and her bestselling book, Dare to Lead™, along with research from Cognitive Coaching. Participants will: • analyze the key ingredients of whole-hearted and balanced living • examine their core values and calibrate their fit within their school or organization • gain skills and tools, such as leaning in with curiosity instead of judgment, starting a hard conversation, establishing boundaries without compromising values, and leading with grounded confidence. How to Build True Ownership in Your Team Members
Do you ever feel like you have to oversee every decision because you can't trust your team? Or, maybe you feel like they don't trust themselves so they run everything by you first? Are you frustrated because you can't seem to get your job done because you're busy supervising everyone else? If so, here's some bad news: You're the bottleneck on your team. But, here's the good news: With the right process, you can quickly help your team take more ownership of their own work so that you can focus on the work that only you can do. In this workshop, participants will learn a process that outlines how to help team members understand the roles they play, how to gradually release ownership to team members in a way that ensures trustworthy independent decisions, and how to develop a feedback loop that helps ensure team members get consistent feedback that ensures they can make even better decisions going forward. All the materials needed to immediately implement this process with team members are included.

A Blueprint for a Modern Curriculum
Prominent researcher, Dr. Robert Marzano, famously noted that a "guaranteed and viable curriculum" delivered at the school and district levels is the most significant factor impacting the overall achievement of students. Accordingly, district leaders should place a priority on ensuring that students have access to a rigorous, engaging, and aligned curriculum.
Jay McTighe, thought leader, curriculum expert, and coauthor of Understanding by Design®, will present ideas from his recent book, Leading Modern Learning, 2nd Edition, on a "blueprint" for a modern curriculum and assessment system for deeper learning, and describe ways in which leaders can enact and support it. Reimagining Curriculum as Transdisciplinary, Experienced-Based Learning
Adopting a transdisciplinary, holistic, pedagogical approach in K–12 education can facilitate transformative learning through a focus on real-world "wicked" challenges (e.g., poverty, global climate change, and food access, among others). One way we can prepare students to tackle such wicked problems is to provide opportunities for them to engage with locally based problems connected to large-scale systemic challenges. This session will provide an opportunity for teachers and instructional coaches to learn about and discuss ways in which to work across networks, disciplines, and institutions to provide students the opportunity to mitigate real problems in their local communities.

The Teacher’s Principal: Support a Staff of Happy, Effective Teachers
When principals take time to think about what motivates their teachers, they will become increasingly effective in supporting an entire staff and improving school culture. Every teacher is driven by a combination of purpose, priorities, and patterns. Knowing whether each of these are grounded in positive or negative intentions will guide a principal's response in enhancing or intervening with each teacher. This session will help attendees strike a three-way balance between setting high expectations, leading with compassion, and embracing flexibility in leadership.

The District Role in Supporting Effective Leadership Development
Leadership research is compelling: principals have a significant influence on teaching and learning. We also know that effective principals, assistant principals, and teacher leaders are consistently supported by district administrators. So, what do district-level administrators need to build capacity to support leadership development at all levels for succession planning? What are the collaborative, coordinated, and cooperative strategies across district departments that improve and impact leadership at all levels? How can district-wide reflective practices enhance professional growth and monitor leadership actions for impact? In this session, participants will explore the answers to these questions by examining concepts and using strategies and tools aligned with a research-based leadership development framework. They'll gain increased perspectives on the district's role in transforming leadership development, as well as action steps for creating sustainable systems of leadership development that support their succession plans. Participants will also examine how a school district in Florida used the framework to guide the ongoing learning of leaders aligned with their succession needs. Building Educator Capacity Through Microcredentials
Successful leaders work to ensure that great teachers will stay, learn, and thrive at their schools. Though many leaders have little control over factors such as salaries, they can create conditions that attract and retain expert teachers such as access to meaningful and personalized professional learning. Microcredentials are a flexible and adaptive professional learning tool that, when used effectively, can empower teachers to strengthen and demonstrate their skills within the context of their work rather than checking boxes, earning points, or counting hours. Microcredentials are performance assessments—tools for job-embedded, sustained, and relevant professional learning connected to student outcomes. Educators who complete microcredentials design their own learning paths while documenting evidence of proficiency in the context of their work.

Scheduling Strategically to Improve Equity and Learning Opportunities
Scheduling strategically at the secondary level does not require a longer school day or more staff. Instead, it is about using existing time in the day and resources differently. Join this session to learn how a medium-sized urban district in Missouri revamped its middle- and high-school schedules and designed more strategic schedules that were more equitable, positively impacted student opportunities and outcomes, and cost-effective. Specific strategies discussed will include how to incorporate effective time for intervention, increase instructional time without extending the school day or adding staff, and increase equity and opportunities by precisely matching staffing to enrollment.

Creating a Collaborative Environment with Families and Community
Research shows family engagement can positively impact student achievement and engagement (Constantino, 2021; Hill et al., 2018). Creating a collaborative environment with families and community stakeholders can serve to remove barriers and enhance voices. Schools must re-examine how they define family engagement and the systems and structures they have in place to engage families and community members.
During the pandemic, schools discovered that equity and access barriers were much more substantial than ever before, creating an even greater need to collaborate with families and community partners. This presentation will share successful strategies that one Title I school utilized before, during, and after the pandemic to partner with families and community members to remove barriers and enhance their voices as stakeholders. These strategies positively impacted student engagement and achievement. Participants will walk away with think-abouts and practical strategies to implement that can improve their family and community engagement with even the most disengaged families. Flourish or Flounder: Strategic Support for New Teachers and Administrators!
In the past, new school teachers and administrators were often left to “figure it out” during their first years of service to our schools. Today's climate has changed. Understanding the struggles of new teachers and administrators in today’s school settings is the first step in paving the way to stronger support for these new teachers and administrators serving your students!
In this engaging session, participants will examine their current practices and identify new—and relatively easy—measures they can implement to support new educators and administrators as they begin their roles. Attendees will leave this session with systematic options for supporting educators and take-home tools that can make an immediate difference in schools and/or districts. Using the Design Thinking Process to Develop SEL Programs
Are you trying to determine where to begin as you improve social-emotional learning? In 2017, five school districts in Indiana began using the Design Thinking Process to develop system-wide social-emotional learning programs. They started by focusing on the needs of their students, reviewing data, observing successful models across the country, and leveraging stakeholder ownership. Since then, they have been strategically implementing models that have changed the lives of thousands of students, staff, and their communities.
Participants will learn about their work, successes, struggles, strategies, and how to translate these experiences into their own districts to address student needs, develop organic community partnerships, and set measurable goals for social-emotional learning programs. Speaker(s): Richard Roll
