Teaching to Empower to Create a Mistake-Safe Culture
"Originally selected for Empower20” Learning involves making many errors. Almost every world culture has proverbs about the positives of mistakes. One of the greatest challenges in creating a mistake-free culture is knowing when to offer students’ guidance and when to step back so they have can make adjustments on their own or with peers. This interactive session will show how to create a nurturing environment for analyzing errors. Using detailed steps, presenters will share 3 tools for engaging students in mistake-safe analyses: journal reflections, teacher-student conferences; and, student-led parent teacher conferences in which students see making mistakes as essential to their learning.

17 Things Resilient Teachers Do (and 4 things they hardly ever do)
Resiliency - that ability to “bounce back” after setbacks and to persist in the face of stress and adversity - is an essential skill for educators. Because the profession is stressful and unpredictable at times, educators need to develop, practice, and refine their own resiliency before they attempt to support students. This relevant, interactive, and fun session will provide techniques, strategies, and methods that help to build resiliency in educators.

21st Century School Improvement: Coaching for Equity
Multiple researchers highlight the significant role instructional coaching plays in improving the academic achievement gap (Haycock, 2001; Reardon, 2013). As diversity in classrooms increases, coaching requires more culturally proficient strategies to create inclusive, student-centered environments that empower all students to learn (Lindsey, et. al, 2019). This workshop provides participants with a multifaceted approach to creating school environments centered on valuing, respecting, and honoring diverse backgrounds, and ethnicities, while looking deeply at one’s own beliefs. During this workshop, participants will engage in interactive activities that feature action planning, reflective questions, conversation vignettes, and case analyses. Ultimately, participants will gain significant insight and strategies to dismantle cultural barriers through equity-based coaching practices to optimize the learning environment for all students.

3 Essentials For Success In The Innovative Blended Classroom
The use of digital learning spaces has exploded in use in classrooms nearly everywhere. Through the use of innovative technologies many educators are moving to (or required to) put content online and extend learning beyond the four walls and beyond the school day. This Blended Learning approach is both beneficial but its definition can be tough to nail down. Blended Learning is different than merely integrating technology into the classroom. Join us as we will examine how to take a research-based, pedagogical approach to blended learning. Through hands-on scenarios we will learn the best practices for blended learning and the innovative technology resources available.

7 Teacher Moves That Make the Difference in Project-Based Learning
Increasing adoption of project-based learning (PBL) in schools worldwide challenges teachers to rethink their role as they shift from traditional instruction to student-centered learning. That's equally true for face-to-face and remote learning. Seven project-based teaching practices—build the culture, design and plan, align to standards, manage activities, scaffold student learning, assess student learning, and engage and coach—demystify the teacher’s role in high-quality PBL and lead to deeper student learning. This session will use video case studies and resources based on research and field study to help participants build their capacity as project-based teachers. School leaders and instructional coaches will gain new insights for supporting teachers’ professional growth. Examples of PBL for meaningful remote learning will be highlighted, with strategies for amplifying student voice and authenticity with the use of digital tools.

A Project-Based Learning University-School Partnership: Lessons Learned
This session will describe a partnership between a university and school to develop project based learning (PBL) units and train teachers in this type of instruction. The ultimate goal of the partnership was increased student engagement and learning. Professional development for teachers is a key mechanism for improving classroom instruction and student achievement (Guo & Yang, 2012). During the first year of the partnership, the university and urban district joined hands to build a sustainable plan for implementing PBL in all classrooms. Educators were challenged to reimagine their classrooms as places where students have voice and choice in their learning. Teachers were also encouraged to use their community as a partner in their PBL unit and classroom. Instructional coaching within the district was a vital piece of this partnership which further supported the connection between district teachers and university faculty. Consideration was given to educational collaboration and support, the influence of teacher mindset and self-efficacy, resource impediments, assessment practices, and improving student participation (McCormick, 2019). This presentation will discuss the results of the first year as well as the lessons learned along the way.

Accountability Grouping: Improving Student Engagement and Learning Outcomes
Improving student engagement and meeting intended learning outcomes have been priority goals for all educators. Accountability grouping - often used in professional spaces - can be applied in classrooms at all levels to accomplish these goals. An Accountability Group is understood to be a group of people who share similar goals and hold each other accountable for progress. Accountability, collaboration and participation are 21st century skills that are critical for student success in the classroom and beyond. Understanding that the global environment increasingly exits in collaborative spaces, this presentation will share the experience of a teacher educator utilizing accountability groupings with a diverse group of undergraduate students. This approach was used to: facilitate PTE students’ development of specific teaching dispositions; improve engagement and motivation; maintain a high standard of academic performance; raise awareness of the impact of classroom culture and management on all learners; build a diverse and inclusive community; improve the utilization of technology for communication; foster leadership at various levels. After this session, participants (K12 – higher education) will collaborate to develop and share a framework of how accountability groupings could work relevant to their respective settings and academic disciplines.

All Students Can Read Complex Texts
We often hear the following statements from teachers. “I want my students to understand the issue of ocean mining, but the texts are too hard.” “I’m hoping to guide my first graders to read Edith Thatcher Hurd’s Starfish, but there’s so many technical words. I’m not sure they can all comprehend it, even as a read aloud.” “We’re starting with excerpts of Little Women in class today, but only some students have the background knowledge to handle this”. Reflecting on these comments, it’s important to ask, How can teachers promote equity in their classrooms when students have different starting skills? Is it fair to just settle for leveled texts and exclude some learners from the richness of readings at grade level and beyond? This interactive session will offer strategies to help k-12 teachers, coaches, and professional developers explore ways to identify and support individual student strengths and needs when reading complex texts. Whole class and small group instruction and scaffolds will be explored. By gaining clarity about each of the factors that contribute to students being able to read increasingly complex texts, participants will have opportunities to converse and develop their own lesson implementations.

Alternative School Leadership (Best Practices at its Finest): The Answer…
Alternative schools have been depicted as the worst choices for a student’s educational option after being displaced from a traditional school setting. In the Alternative School setting, the design is to provide students/parents with a Second Chance for a Better Opportunity. This presentation will focus on best practices that have been identified and utilized within the Alternative School setting. The practices that will be discussed are of value for the reinstallation for motivating, educating, and empowering students who undoubtedly will return back to the status of becoming academically successful from their experience in an Alternative School setting. Details on the importance of Alternative School Leadership and the necessary skillset to effectively support its school district will be presented. Explicitly, this presentation primarily provides an understanding to those who question why Alternative schools exist and for those who serve in the capacity as Alternative Educators for becoming a S.E.A.L. (Specific Educational Alternative Leader). This presentation will be delivered in a way that every educational professional is able to share ideas, actively participate in collaborative discussions and to establish a best practice to add to their repertoire of leadership skills in all educational school settings.

Neuropacing: Perfecting The Art of Teaching
Classroom evidence tells us what works, cognitive science tells why, and neuropacing tells us how. The art of teaching is masterfully interweaving proven strategies with what we know about the brain to meet the academic, and social-emotional needs of students and classrooms. Neuropacing tells us how to weave these together by offering suggestions for pacing the lesson with a variety of strategies that will leverage both what we know about learning and the brain. First, identify the instructional purpose, then select a strategy to get started. After that, machine learning kicks into gear, utilizing multiple backend factors to generate suggestions that align with science. Neuropacing, a guide in designing great instruction.

Are You Planning an Activity or Teaching a Skill?
Crafting a high-quality learning intention takes planning. Often, teachers will use an activity as their learning intention. The learning intention focuses on what we want our students to know and do. Create the learning intention first, then determine the success criteria that students can use to assess their understanding, then create the activity. As you plan instruction, ask yourself: What do you want your students to know? Why is that important? Can they learn this information another way? How? Attend this session to design a learning intention and success criteria that support your students’ learning and skills they can apply to their academic life.

Are Your Schools Designed for Learning? How to Tell and Why it Matters
Unless we redesign the intersection of learning and teaching, we will never achieve the outcomes and the level of excellence our communities, economy, and society expect and need from our schools. The good news is that there are schools across the country that are making this shift to a learner-centered ecosystem. This session will address what it means to be a learner-centered school and the research that supports it. Participants will leave the session with useful ideas and practical strategies that educators and system leaders can use to begin or continue this urgent and important journey.

Assessing the Whole Child
Students are more than just empty vessels for learning; they are whole people with a range of emotions and needs. Therefore when and how we assess them must acknowledge and honor them fully offering as many opportunities as possible to show what they know. In this session, participants will learn how to equitably design assessments, provide feedback through the formative assessment process, and practically teach how to teach kids about their own learning dispositions. Building off of the CASAL SEL model, we will also discuss the needs of students and we can better assess for learning with this understanding.

Belonging and Dignity: The Hidden Keys to Equity Implementation
“Originally selected for Empower20” Are you committed to educational equity? If so, you’re probably familiar with how equity initiatives often fail, leaving educators wondering, “Now what do I do?” or "Where are we going with all of this?" This session will focus on how the concepts of belonging and dignity make equity actionable and measurable. Dignity is the bottom line when it comes to anti-racism, social justice, and equity. Belonging is the goal. Participants will leave this session oriented to a framework for belonging and dignity that includes indicators, core competencies, standards, and the all-too-common dignity distortions that, if left unresolved, undermine our equity aspirations. Walk away knowing what it takes to lead, teach, and generally interact with and for dignity.

Beyond the newsletters: Keep staff connected and growing professionally in a remote setting and throughout the school year.
Every week emails arrive with news for the week from the administration - a small snippet of professional learning, meeting agendas, and more that get lost in the staff’s overflowing inboxes. A staff meeting features new learning tools that are lost in the hustle and bustle of daily work and time constraints that make no allowance for sharing good things. Time is always of the essence, and keeping everything organized can be difficult. To keep staff connected, growing professionally, and sharing with one another, creating a virtual whole school classroom is just the solution. Utilizing the Canvas LMS or Google classroom, building administrators, and coaches can create an interactive online environment to deliver more than just the weekly news. These platforms aren’t just for classroom teachers; they are a gateway for building administrators and coaches to allow them to house professional development articles/activities, allow for multiple participants to share thoughts on topics, integrate opportunities for feedback, and keep all meeting agendas and school essentials in one online place accessible from any device.

Blame the Messenger: Improving Communication Skills for Education Leaders
Originally selected for Empower20. Dead on arrival: That's the case for many education messages. New ideas and great initiatives fail to get the reception they deserve because of poor presentation. The problems of weak communication skills are exacerbated when digital tools must be used to replace in-person talks. Being impressive and engaging online is extremely difficult. Education leaders need to raise the bar and improve their presentation skills in order to engage and enthuse listeners. In this session, participants will learn the five keys to creating effective messages and avoiding common mistakes. Then, participants will learn the six keys to effectively delivering those messages. Finally, participants will learn how to adjust talks for an online environment and make remote talks effective. Improved oral communication will lead to more success, whether talking to staff, students, parents, community members, or others.

Building a Culture of Teacher Leadership to Impact Student Achievement
Teacher leadership is key to improving student achievement for at-risk students. A teacher leadership framework is most effective when it includes the components of self and collective efficacy strategies, teacher self-reflection platforms, peer coaching, continuous instructional feedback, differentiated professional development, and a laser focus of refining instructional practices through the PLC cycle. Video Coaching has helped our teachers reflect upon their practices to improve teaching and learning for students. Our teachers have gained the confidence to make instructional decisions and implement strategies in an environment that promotes risk-taking and action-based research through the promotion of teacher leadership. Our school experienced achievement gains in reading and math from the beginning of the year to the middle of the year by 12% during progress monitoring. We projected our campus to grow at least 20% by the end of the school year. Our teachers continue to provide quality online instruction for our students using the best instructional practices and strategies, which evolved through their use of video coaching and self-reflection, despite COVID-19. Our growth was due to teacher’s being empowered to use self-reflection to make instructional adjustments. With the right support tools and a culture of teacher leadership, students can achieve academic success.

Building a Strong Vision for Your School
Let's be honest. Most vision statements are little more than aspirational phrases strung together. Once they're written, we rarely revisit them or use them to drive our work. And yet, when written properly, your vision statement is one of the most powerful tools you have to galvanize your staff, convey value to parents and students, and keep the work you do focused and effective in changing students' lives for the better. In this interactive workshop, discover the right way to write a vision statement and then work through a simple exercise to create your own vision for your school. This is NOT one of those excruciating and futile visioning workshops. Instead, come discover a powerful way to define your school vision and use it to maximize your impact in your school.

Feeling Empowered and Connected through Clarity, Collaboration, and Capacity
The question is, how do we build a system that ensures more than one year’s growth in one year for all learners, adults, and students? This workshop looks at the latest research around necessary actions educational leaders can take to maximize the impact on student learning and achievement. The presenter will translate current theory into practical application utilizing clarity, culture, and capacity as the means to safeguard the ongoing advancement of instructional practice and student learning. Student clarity, then, is an essential outcome of teacher and leader clarity that brings students into the process of their learning journey. Through a contagious culture of ongoing collaboration, the conversations are steeped in evidence. Such discussions lead to the growth of year or more in both adults and students. “If we are going to produce better and more prepared students, school culture must become aligned in purpose and collective focus on student achievement” (Muhammad, 2009, p. 87). Lasting, through the organization’s structures, leaders can build the capacity of their staff. I am defining capacity as increased knowledge, skill, mindset. Participants study how these feasible organizational structures build a whole system that is capable of delivering visible instruction and visible learning.

Building Relationships through Remote Learning: Ways to Support Students and Staff During Uncertain Times.
During this session, ASCD Emerging Leaders Rob & Billy will discuss multiple strategies that they used with the students, families, and staff members during remote learning. Relationships are essential in a school climate and culture. During uncertain times those relationships become even more critical, and strategies that work will be shared during this session. These strategies include instructional tips such as using brief videos for students, connecting with students through weekly challenges, creating virtual field trips for students, converting daily lessons to remote lessons. Implementation of STEM flipped classroom for Middle School Students, a virtual book battle. Connecting with staff during remote learning has helped build stronger relationships with faculty members. During remote learning, we connected for professional learning, weekly check-ins, games, challenges, and support. These strategies can be implemented during normal times to continue to foster a strong school culture! Connecting with the community through social media read aloud and check-ins with guidance counselors and other staff members. We created weekly games such as Kahoot to engage our families in collaborative activities.

Busting The Lead in Leadership: A Jamaican Experience
Leadership is a position and an act. School leaders should live both perspectives thus inspiring others to own and hone their leadership skills while manifesting or aspiring to leadership positions. Leaders should identify, validate and nurture multilevel and multidimensional leadership within self and team. However, this process has lead-like challenges that need to be busted. This presentation showcases strategies that two Jamaican leaders are using to bust the lead. It invites educators to: 1. Identify and address "lead" in their practice. 2. Enhance their leadership bust by busting their lead.

Change is the Only Constant: Leading in a World of Change
Whether you are leading a school-wide initiative, a new curriculum adoption or through a global pandemic, something that is for certain is that change is the only constant in education. Change can be uncomfortable but strong leadership can make a difference in the process. By understanding the change process, being a transparent and strong communicator, and taking a student-centered team approach, leaders can make an experience that may typically bring anxiety, into one that is a positive experience. In this session, participants will learn strategies for being an effective leader through change including 1) key components to consider when implementing change, 2) strategies for effective communication, and 3) steps to take in creating a student-centered team approach in the process.

Co-Teaching Do’s, Dont’s & Do Betters
Despite the clear benefits to both students and teachers when effective co-teaching happens, resistance to co-teaching is still prevalent. Why? Because too often what is happening is not effective co-teaching! In this engaging session, two national experts on inclusion and co-teaching will share co-teaching do’s, don’ts, and do betters while they model co-teaching themselves. Participants will discuss effective co-teaching structures, recognize the most efficient collaborative practices, and connect co-teachers’ realities with universally designed K–12 school and classroom scenarios (for both virtual and in-person situations). Establish, expand, and solidify co-teaching knowledge, skills, roles and relationships to turn challenges into successes!

Coaching Through Barriers: Lack of Confidence and Overload
Educators often face internal and external barriers. Some grapple with a lack of confidence or a state of overload. Instructional coaches can impact lasting change. Yet, they often feel ill-equipped to support shifts in educators’ practices, especially when faced with challenging circumstances. Personalized coaching strategies can be utilized with individuals based upon the shifting seasons of their work lives. Participants will explore effective coaching practices that navigate the barriers of lacking confidence and experiencing overload, identify the Compassionate Coaching Focus for each barrier, and discover personalized coaching strategies to empower teachers to move beyond their barriers in order to impact student learning.

College and Career Readiness: A Schoolwide Initiative
As students take five or more years to complete a bachelor’s degree, states and districts are looking at ways to better equip students in making informed career choices based on aptitude and ability. Many states have adopted college- and career-readiness standards to assist educators helping students make decisions about their future career. This session will introduce an effective model that has students actively engaged in career goals. Participants will become familiar with career standards, explore whom to contact for assistance with career opportunities and speakers, and explore tools to help students make informed decisions as they relate to their career choice.

Communicating Clearly: School Messaging for Equity and Engagement
How can educators effectively use communication channels to strengthen their school? Taking cues from communication research that drives business and advertising, this session will explore how and why some messages break through the noise and garner attention. The way we speak and write is vital for students, families, and stakeholders to hear what schools have to say. Learn from two veteran educators with diverse experiences in teacher leadership, school administration, writing for national audiences, and advocacy at all levels. Dive into six common communication purposes and how best to leverage messages to ensure equity, eliminate coded language, and promote positive culture. Discover effective practices for family and stakeholder involvement that strengthen and clarify messages while avoiding common pitfalls. Find out how to harness frequently used channels, from email to social media, to bolster school goals. In this hands-on session, participants will examine the good, the bad, and ugly of school communication efforts, assess current messages through a communications audit, plan for productive and positive messaging that promotes transparency and coherence. Get ready to build school communication that fosters trusting connections with family and the community.

Confronting Racial Microaggressions to Increase Awareness and Challenge Bias
As educators, we all have cultural expectations and biases based on our worldviews and life experiences. Through open dialogue and personal reflection, we will define key terms such as microaggressions, prejudice, and bias, as well as deconstruct root causes, intent, and perceptions of microaggressions. Participants will gain a greater awareness of how microaggressions impact on student efficacy and school culture, as well as how to challenge and call-in practices that work against student and school success. Practical strategies will be shared to change the narrative of and better advocate for marginalized students as well as give educators the tools needed to facilitate self-auditing and professional growth. This topic is vital in helping teachers to address the implicit and explicit bias that affects how teachers interact with students. Too often, marginalized students are targeted and treated inequitably based on race, socioeconomic status, or perceived academic ability. Microaggressions often deter students from believing in their ability to succeed and trying their best in school as they feel the teacher is prejudiced against them or does not care about their educational trajectory.

Connect With Me: A Model for Growing Educators in Diverse Settings
Nevada is home to both the fifth-largest school district in the United States as well as some of the country’s smallest school districts. Teachers in Nevada face unique challenges of geography and access, even before the current health crisis dictated a new way of engaging with students. In order to build capacity and to improve student outcomes, teachers needed professional learning to better address the problems of practice that persistently challenge us in our respective contexts. Additionally, students needed opportunities to stay connected to their school community while being actively engaged in their learning. In this session, participants will learn from the personal experiences of the presenters, as well as discuss and compare the tools used to propel professional learning across virtual platforms. Participants will take away tools and strategies to provide productive and equitable distance learning for teachers and students to set the foundation for a better future.

Creating a Student Centered Curriculum Out of Crisis
Musicals of voices from different countries, perfectly cooked egg chemistry and creating a cashless society. From the crisis of having to move to distance learning came amazing examples of students and teachers working together to design inquiries into compelling questions and action projects. Keeping up the momentum driven by necessity to move away from industrial aged credits and testable standards, school administrators and curriculum experts can work with teachers to make student centered and real world based inquiries the new normal curriculum. Educators have long been frustrated by a disconnect between our current model and the needs of the 21st Century (Good, 2008, ASCD, 2009, Brookings Institute February, 2019). Participants will explore examples as students take more ownership of their learning needs, and create concrete strategies to foster the “leaving behind” of the outdated notions of teachers as purveyors of knowledge. Participants will draw on shared experiences, resources from presenters (including NGSS, C3, Common Core) and our “Elevating Visions” Planner to create outlines for how to innovate and address a changing world. We will outline steps for K-12 updated Curriculum Mapping to include instructional best practices including blended learning, student designed projects and social action.

Creating Awareness Creates Inclusive and Equitable Classrooms: Advocate, Don’t Witness
In the spirit of inclusion, this interactive session is designed for everyone. Whether you feel inclusion exists or not, this session attempts to push you out of your comfort zone as you interact with the presenter and other attendees to experience personal narratives of exclusion. No matter how diverse you think your schools are, does inclusion truly exist? How do you create awareness in schools, thereby supporting safe and comfortable learning environments? Explore the power of perception and how paying attention to details can make a significant difference meeting the basic physiological needs of students so they can focus on learning. It is with an open mind and eyes, you see how one person’s actions may cause others harm and how turning a blind-eye to students’ behavior can create life-long trauma. Openness creates awareness and it only takes one person with a voice to become an advocate and cultivate change.

Creating Clarity: Protecting and Developing Students’ Strategic Efforts to Learn
How do we eliminate clutter and help students prioritize their strategic efforts to learn? How do we design assessment tasks that gather evidence aligned to what is most important to learn? What does “proficient” actually mean? This session will present a framework that helps teachers, schools, and districts align their efforts to clarify what evidence of success is most important and then align programs, courses, units, and lessons to shared success criteria. Participants will learn how this clarity framework can be used to help teachers prioritize curriculum, instruction, and assessment that protects, and develops, student’s strategic efforts to learn.

Cultivating Growth Mindsets: Strategies That Work
In this experiential workshop, participants will discover how a growth mindset fuels academic gains and learn the presenter’s seven principles for cultivating growth mindsets in onsite or virtual classrooms. These original principles range from teaching brain fundamentals as a scientific foundation for growth mindedness to assisting students in setting growth goals and providing the feedback they need to improve. Positive engagement and a focus on progress, not perfection, will also be discussed as key ways to support growth mindsets. The presenter will model original methods for applying principles for growth and share 10 innovative, teacher-tested strategies that have been shown to improve learning outcomes for a broad range of students across a variety of contexts.

Cultural Competence Now:
With all of the competing initiatives being implemented in schools, who has time to build cultural competency? When are you supposed to focus on equity? And how would you measure your progress even if you did? You do, and you can right now! This interactive session will engage participants in several activities that promote critical thinking on bias, racism and privilege - providing all the tools needed for you to replicate them with your staff and/or peers. You will leave with practical guidance on how to create a more racially and culturally inclusive and equitable environment in your school or classroom while demonstrating measurable skills, dispositions, and behaviors.

Culture First, Culture Last, Culture Always: Five Easy Steps to Enhancing School Culture for Students, Staff, and Families
“Originally selected for Empower20”. If there is one thing this past year has shown us, there are certain things that are beyond our control. When things go awry, an understanding of the school's current climate and a proactive approach helps support the established culture in a teaching and learning community.
In the quest to improve our schools, everything starts with culture, but too many culture-improvement programs tackle only the surface-level issues. We’ll provide a comprehensive, five-part approach to enhancing school culture that will help you go deeper by differentiating for three major stakeholder groups: students, staff, and families. In this session, participants will learn how to address issues of equity and excellence by enhancing school climate and culture. This five-part approach (acknowledge, ask, analyze, act, and assess) prioritizes equity for historically marginalized groups and establishes powerful connections between school culture, student and staff mental health, and academic performance. Curiosity-Driven Learning in Any Classroom: Three Easy Moves for Increasing Student Engagement in School and Online
[NOTE: Originally selected for Empower20, session updated] The research couldn’t be clearer: Getting students more curious and actively engaged in learning raises achievement and promotes positive behavior. But, for many teachers, curiosity-driven learning remains a goal rather than a reality. This was true in many traditional classrooms before education dramatically changed. And nurturing a curiosity-driven learning environment can be even more of a challenge online. No matter the format of the classroom, we have found that the biggest reason for this is that teachers don’t have the “how” needed to turn research into everyday practice. This session focuses on the how of student curiosity. In it, we will introduce and model three simple instructional tools that help teachers at all grade levels unleash the power of curiosity in any traditional, virtual, or blended classroom.

Design Thinking and Student Partnerships Drive Innovative Change
School leaders need to be change agents. They need to lead with empathy, think big, empower student leadership, and take courageous action to drive results. Attendees will move beyond the "why" of innovation and student voice and experience the "how" from two public school leaders that utilize human-centered design as a change management strategy. This session will put leaders in closer partnership with their students. Partnerships that create a transformative, student-centered school, resulting in more positive and equitable student outcomes. Actionable insights will include the co-creation of a school-wide survey with students along with our process of carefully analyzing their responses, socializing the results, and taking action. In addition, we will review how we expanded student leadership in the development and implementation of school improvement plans and professional development. The leadership moves we explore in this session have brought our school closer to our vision of each student being able to answer, “YES!” to three questions--Do I belong here?, Is this meaningful?, Can I do this?.

Developing Effective Interdisciplinary Focus Teams for Teacher-Led School Improvement
For schools to be successful, every educator must be actively involved in school improvement efforts. Charismatic principals are awesome but limited by their staff’s willingness to overcome challenges. Join this session and learn how two leaders implemented and supported developing teacher leadership through Focus Teams to improve student learning in a whole-school improvement process. Through the use of teacher-led Focus Teams, leaders are better able to address the needs of a school through the process of identifying challenges, researching possible solutions, identifying research-based actions, and implementing the plan, schools are better able to leverage the strengths of their staff and create teacher-leaders to enact changes to overcome challenges. Gain insight from the experiences of two school leaders into what works and what does not, how to create teacher buy-in, and leveraging teacher strengths and initiatives to create a greater learning environment for all.

Differentiating Instruction: It’s not an "I-Already-Do-That" Kind of Thing
Effective differentiation, like effective parenting, requires many years of sustained effort to develop deep skills. Investing that effort has the potential to enrich us greatly as human beings and to help us as educators to have a profoundly positive influence on the young people with whom we interact. In this session, educators will work together in small discussion groups to analyze several examples of differentiation, both in the classroom and on-line, using a rubric that describes a progression toward expertise. The shared conversation will help participants develop a more robust understanding of the intent of differentiation, its potential to benefit teachers and their students, how educators come to understand its principles and develop its practices over time, and possible next steps for a participant's growth.

Differentiating Written Culminating Tasks for English Learners
In order to hold all students accountable for achieving the same content and language objectives in the heterogeneous classroom, teachers must be able to differentiate instruction effectively. The art of differentiation lies in a foundational understanding of the distinction between difficulty and complexity: the difficult aspects of a task must be stripped away in order to grant English Learners (ELs) easier access to the task and the complexity or rigor at its core. After exploring the differences between difficulty and complexity, participants in this interactive workshop will learn a variety of differentiation strategies for common academic writing assignments in both science and the humanities. They will have the opportunity to apply these concepts by differentiating a sample written unit culminating task collaboratively with other attendees.

Discovering Our PULSE: Facilitating Empowering Professional Learning Experiences
Professional learning experiences offer an incredible opportunity to empower educators to stretch their practice. However, too often, these events are one-size, fits all episodes. Together, we will explore a professional learning design cycle focused on priming, ushering, launching, socially constructing, and extending the learning loop beyond face-to-face engagements. We will examine ways to promote social construction during professional learning and consider the integral role reflection plays in the growth process. Participants will leave with tools and processes to guide their professional learning planning and facilitation to craft true experiences - not just events.

Dismantling Toxic Gender Norms at the Heart of SEL: Honor Emotionality, Transform Society
SEL is gendered; unquestioned gender conditioning determines which social and emotional skills are appropriate for females to learn as they become women and which skills are appropriate for males to learn as they become men. As a result, skills that are necessary for the healthy development of all children become stunted as they sacrifice their freedom of expression and full emotionality in order to conform to restrictive binary gender norms. SEL outcomes are often marginalized by the pressures children face to default into traditional gendered modes of relationship building, emotional expression, and self-management. Thus, for SEL programs to truly thrive, they must incorporate explicitly gender-focused lessons that counteract restrictive norms and unpack the stigmas attached to those who veer outside narrow social constructions of manhood/womanhood. The combination of SEL with gender instruction redefines healthy emotionality and compassionate nurturing relationships as essential capabilities for all human beings and helps all members of the community craft healthier evolving identities. This session contains data-driven, implementable at scale, experiential methods for facilitating dialogue amongst high-schoolers and teachers that unearth gender implicit biases and question harmful aspects of their socialization. This generates more authentic, inclusive, respectful relationships with oneself and others.

Disrupted . . . But Still Growing: Elevating Professional Practices Through a Systematic Approach
When traditional learning environments are disrupted, the impact of teacher leaders is magnified. They tirelessly work on the front lines and are pivotal to inspiring others to continuously grow even in an uncertain world. Creating a scaffolded approach to improving instructional practices was a goal set four years ago in our district. Through the use of our Teacher Leadership Teams, we not only have increased student performance, but have teachers reinvigorated to become experts in their field. By providing mini-focus areas of evidenced-based high-yield strategies and targeted conversation about formative assessment data, we have developed and increased conscious competency in our district. This structure for building teacher leaders proved to be invaluable during a time when all educators are facing new challenges.

Empowering Multilingual Learners Through Classroom Assessment in Multiple Languages
In K-12 settings, schools and districts continue to witness increased numbers of multilingual learners. Equally noticeable is the surge in instructional strategies that allow multilingual learners to access their entire linguistic repertoire using their multiple languages and cultures to make meaning from content. Yet, even with raised awareness and sensitivity to social justice, educators still tend to work from a monolingual construct and generally lose sight of what multilingual learners can do. Considering the ‘whole child’ for these students means applying multilingual constructs to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Whether In virtual or in-tact classrooms, equity for multilingual learners stems from instructional practices that are inclusive of multilingualism. In that way, multilingual learners can negotiate meaning and engage in deep learning in the language they best understand when interacting with peers in their shared language or exploring multilingual resources. These same opportunities for multilingual learners to become agents of their own learning have to extend to assessment. Through the lens of a multilingual assessment cycle, from planning to taking action based on concrete feedback, this session highlights how multilingual learners can gain agency and become empowered when linguistic and culturally sustainability is part of their classroom assessment experience and school culture.

Empowering Teachers to Empower Students to Learn Fractions Meaningfully
Expert on fractions Susan Lamon wrote: "The losses that occur because of the gaps in conceptual understanding about fractions, ratios, and related topics are incalculable." Since fractions are foundational to many STEM topics, from middle to high school and beyond, it beckons us to act! Why is a solid foundation of fractions so important? Firstly, at about age 8, students enter the multiplicative world for the first time and everything changes: multiplicative structures that permeate much of mathematics from grade 3 onward are all based on the study of fractions: rates, percentages, proportional relationships, rational functions are some examples. Secondly, fractions are essential to success in algebra, a gateway course that have left too many women and students of color on the side of the road. “Algebra for all” is predicated on “fractions for all.” Finally, Fractions play a key role in students’ feelings about mathematics. Students begin to end their love for mathematics when they must surrender their sense making and yield to sense-less memorization. Drawing on 30+ years of international work, the speaker will address key misconceptions, core concepts, pedagogical insights, engaging tasks, bridges to algebra and interactive apps, all related to the teaching and learning of fractions.

Empowering Young Children Using Dialogue: Tools for Giving Kids a Voice and Undoing Oppression
Dialogue empowers and transforms learners, and is a powerful pedagogical tool for our youngest and most vulnerable students. As Freire (1987) noted, dialogue can undo the oppression of racism, classism, sexism, and create effective citizens in a democracy. Dialogue also exercises all of the complex cognitive skills (and corresponding brain functions) that we know to enhance school performance (executive functions such as planning, problem solving, negotiating rules, being flexible; self-regulation skills such as inhibition, emotion regulation, sustaining attention). Young children easily and naturally embody the key ingredients of successful discussions: asking questions, divergent thinking, being present, and the intellectual risk-taking. It is critical that we give our youngest learners the opportunity to be in charge of their learning in this way, and let them know that their voice matters. In this interactive session, participants will learn tools to use dialogue pedagogy with young children, including choosing subject areas to build in dialogue; planning for lessons that cannot entirely be predicted; figuring out timing, ground rules, goals and scaffolding, and the nuts and bolts of starting and ending successful discussions with young children. Engaging Every Student in Challenging Classroom Conversations through Constructivist Media Decoding for Classroom or Online Teaching
In today’s increasingly complex and media-saturated world, it’s difficult to compete with the pull and power of digital media. The richly metacognitive process of constructivist media decoding (CMD) leverages this power by engaging students at all grade levels in collaborative analysis of media messages through participatory learning, inquiry and reflection. In this highly interactive session, participants will engage in a range of innovative CMD activities for students from different backgrounds and skill levels designed to address challenging topics related to diversity, sustainability, SEL, and health. Personalized Learning in the Remote and Hybrid Worlds: Meaningfully Engaging All Learners with the Content – and Each Other
While individualization lies at the heart of many blended and personalized approaches (whether in-person, remote, hybrid and/or simultaneous learning), educators face unique challenges when designing and implementing instruction that supports and engages ALL learners. In this session, you will learn about research-based, effective remote K-12 instructional practices, as well as specific approaches educators are currently using across the country to cross the virtual divide. During the session, you will also have the opportunity to explore specific strategies so that you can implement them immediately in your own classroom, whether that is in-person, remote, or somewhere in between.

Equity and Excellence Right Now: The 90 90 90 Solution
In this session based on his latest book, the presenter will share the latest research on equity. Since the original publication of the 90 90 90 studies, we have learned a great deal about school improvement in high-poverty schools. This session will include compelling new evidence on how schools make a profound difference in the lives of students in poverty. Some of the evidence challenges conventional beliefs about dealing with students in poverty. The emerging research and science on this subject will help teachers, leaders, and policy makers allocate resources and time wisely to help students in poverty achieve their potential.

Equity Leadership: The What, The How, and The Why?
We are at a time when the inequities that exist within our schools can no longer be ignored. Even well-intended education policies and practices often contribute to the injustices our civil rights laws were written to eliminate, and many educators struggle to determine where to begin when attempting to address such inequities. In this session, participants will discover protocols to identify equity as an issue in their school environments (the what), learn strategies to lead change and develop equitable learning environments (the how), and understand why this work is crucial to supporting the whole child (the why).

Reading With Presence: Crafting Meaningful, Evidence-Based Reading Responses
How can we know if students are genuinely engaged when they read? Many times, they become experts at merely finding the answers they think the teacher wants. They are skilled at skimming for facts without genuine investment. Like everyone, they may have moments of true inquiry, wonder, risk, or connection as they read, but without a space to explore further, these questions and connections are fleeting. This session will show teachers a simple, authentic, effective system that gives students a safe space to explore, question, and connect, while developing their metacognitive abilities and writing fluency. The Reader Response (“RR”) technique can work with any text and is automatically differentiated for all students. We will practice the process of writing RRs and explore over 30 categories of response, ranging from basic skills such as “Give an Opinion,” “Spot the Setting,” and “Mark the Motivation” to literary theories such as “Gender and Queer Theory” and “Critical Race Theory.” A handout will describe each category—basic and advanced—fully. We will also discuss various springboard activities students can do with RRs. Participants will reflect on how they can incorporate the use of RRs most effectively in their own classrooms.

Facilitating Teacher Leadership Development: A reflective and developmental curriculum
Congratulations! You are a new teacher leader! Now what? This session will examine a teacher leader curriculum that the New York City Department of Education’s Teacher Career Pathways has designed to allow for sustained, intentional training and development targeted specifically to teacher leadership competencies. This curriculum enhances teacher leadership skills and creates ongoing opportunities within and among schools to practice distributive leadership and lead effective, reflective conversations to improve teaching and learning. The curriculum is structured around cycles of learning in five areas of instructional leadership including one-to-one peer coaching, leading from a lab classroom, designing professional learning, leading teacher teams, and leadership conversations. By creating differentiated support, opportunities for practice, and reflection that is responsive to a teacher leader's point of entry, teacher leaders will develop mastery in fostering collaboration, growth mindset, and inquiry while cultivating sustained teacher leadership in schools and student achievement. Participants will experience and engage in the scope and sequence of this cycle and reflect on foundational teacher leader mindsets that ground the collaborative work that teacher leaders take on.

Flip the Script: Empower Teachers and Embed the Professional Development Inside the Classroom
Teachers widely report that professional development doesn’t address their real challenges. The best principals are also great teachers, and yet most professional development happens outside of the classroom. All too often, principals do not associate their role as instructional or intellectual leaders with what actually happens in the minute-by-minute actions of instruction. The traditional principal-teacher power dynamic often makes it hard for principals to partner with teachers as a colleague helping out inside their classrooms. Educators engage in endless debates about best schooling practices: phonics vs. whole language; cultural diversity of texts vs. the canon; mandates vs. consensus leadership; and on and on. The problem is that most of these issues and their solutions operate outside the learners themselves (Decker K. Rutishauser, Rowman & Littlefield, Inc. 2021). In our pedagogy, student intentions form the basis of all adult action; in our professional development framework, teacher intentions form the basis of all action. Flipping classrooms into a space where student intentions drive all the adult actions, in theory and practice, is hard to do. Our professional development framework offers an innovative narrative for how any school can shift the power dynamics so that they can implement a learner-driven approach to school design.

Fostering Stronger Family and Student Engagement through Purposeful Home-School Connections
It can be a challenge for schools to meet the varied communication needs of students, parents, staff, teachers, and administrators, all while planning, implementing and evaluating curriculum. Communication between stakeholders is the backbone for the home-school connection, yet is rarely prioritized given the high demand for teachers’ and administrators’ time and attention. Improved communications between stakeholders strengthens connections and community, enhancing the overall learning environment. Leveraging reflective practice, a research-based educational concept, this interactive workshop will help to address these challenges. Learning to employ reflective practice on a regular basis facilitates better understanding of ourselves and others. It also helps us become conscious of our role and helps to inspire behavioral changes. Through engaging discussion and interactive activities, this session will include practical strategies to improve: 1) professional communication, 2) collaboration with all stakeholders, and 3) invite productive parent participation. Four Essential Asset-Based Practices for Teaching Students Living with Adversity
Children continue to be exposed to adverse childhood experiences that have been further exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing inequities. Educators are seeking ways to effectively support these students. It requires that we draw from students’ assets and strengths and look beyond “what is lacking” to find “what is already there.” This interactive session will help educators create a distance or in-person learning environment that empowers students living with adversity to see their individual strengths and assets. The presenters will illustrate four evidence-based, practical elements of such an environment, discuss their rationale, and guide participants in using them.

From Invisible to Invaluable: Creating and Maintaining a Classroom Culture to Drive Student Achievement
This session will focus on the objective ways teachers and school leaders can build authentic and lasting culture. We will draw on research from the Stanford School of Design and John Hattie's Visible Learning to make a case that culture (our daily habits and practices) drives successful student achievement above all other structural and tactical practices. Student outcomes are about students, not outcomes. Whether you are a classroom teacher striving to create something special and unique, or a school leader searching for ways to galvanize your staff, let's explore ways we can build the culture together!

From Phonics to Fluency to Proficient Reading
Phonics (word decoding) and reading fluency have been identified as essential and critical components of proficient and successful reading. Despite their acknowledged importance, significant numbers of students struggle to achieve proficiency in these competencies and, as a result, do not achieve full and appropriate levels of proficiency in reading. Valencia and Buly, for example, found that 85% of students who performed poorly on high-stakes state mandated tests of reading proficiency exhibited difficulties in either word recognition or reading fluency, or both areas. This session will present several scientific research-based approaches for teaching phonics and fluency at all grade levels. In addition to their proven effectiveness, the instructional approaches are also authentic in nature and highly engaging for students and teachers alike. Participants will learn several actionable strategies for teaching (and coaching teachers in) these foundational reading competencies. Participants will also learn of sources of authentic materials, many free, for teaching phonics and fluency effectively and with high levels of engagement.

From Vulnerability to Empathy: Building Student Friendships and Leading Local Action
How can little kids do big things? Hear the inspiring story of how two classrooms partnered with each other to tackle the issue of hunger in both communities. This session will offer practical strategies for helping young learners develop foundational socioemotional skills (e.g., perspective taking, respectful communication, and critical thinking). Educators will learn how these skills can help create a classroom culture that empowers students to show vulnerability and empathy with each other as they discuss challenges in their communities. At the end, participants will develop an action plan for how their students can identify, understand, and take action on local and global issues.

Game On! Empowering ALL Students Through Gamification Grounded in Project-Based Learning, Standards-Based Assessments, and Researched Best Practices!
This engaging presentation, complete with extensive hand-outs detailing this ground-breaking curriculum with recommended resources, is best described as “Project-Based Learning Meets Standards-Based Grading Meets Interdisciplinary Learning Meets Gamification Meets ‘Shark Tank.’” Discover why this curriculum is producing authentic learning where students actively request additional readings, vocabulary, and writing activities, as well as embrace failure, as vital educational currency for their game prototypes, which are currently being actively evaluated/sought after by game designers and publishers thirsty for their creations. Educators will hear from a published game designer who has worked with an English teacher to bring a project-based, game design course to a group of 10th grade honors students. This opportunity has provided a glimpse into the success of higher level learning through board games. Teachers will also hear from two educators whose student performance exceeded their expectations with the implementation of this gamified curriculum. Additionally, the curriculum is presented demonstrating the alignment with findings reflected in the most current research from such revered educators as: Harvey Silver, Kylene Beers, Bob Probst, Kelly Gallagher, Robert Marzano, Jeffrey Wilhelm, and Jay McTighe. Finally, colleagues will also have the opportunity to engage with various games/student prototypes and experience some game creation activities.

Gen Me: Recruiting, Retaining, and Leading Millennial Educators
A 2016 Gallup survey indicated that only 6 percent of K–12 superintendents in public school districts strongly agreed that their districts understood the needs of millennials in the workplace. With many districts struggling to recruit and retain teachers, it’s important for district leaders to understand and be able to effectively lead this generation in order to ensure the long-term success of their districts. Participants in this session will explore the key characteristics of this generation and how to discern their cultural distinctions. Participants will learn, practice, and apply strategies for effectively recruiting, retaining, and leading millennial educators in their districts.

Get In On The Remix: CRRSP (Culturally Responsive, Relevant, and Sustainable Pedagogy) for All
A definition for the word remix is ‘taking bits of information and using them to create something new, different, and hopefully meaningful’. This session offers a remix of existing pedagogies and demonstrates how it can be used in and beyond the classroom to develop an equitable school culture and an engaged learning community. This session addresses student and teacher education through the lens of the (CRRSP) pedagogical approach. It uses the focal areas and characteristics of this approach to analyze the current state of work in the field, evaluate innovative educational artifacts, and create actionable plans for participants. This workshop offers ideas on how to build cultural competence, educator capacity, and desired outcomes for all. Using a multimodal presentation, interactive activities, educational scenarios and artifacts, and collaborative PLCs, participants will use their expertise, in conjunction with the tools of the session and their collaboration with peers, to construct meaning, internalize the process, and create an action plan specific to their individual educational spaces. Another definition for remix is ‘(something) which has been altered or contorted from its original state by adding, removing, and changing pieces of the item.’ Get in on the remix and create something new and meaningful!

Going the Distance: Game-Inspired Distance Learning Through Play
You've heard all the best practices and buzzwords for distance learning and online classes: Asynchronous. Student voice. Choice. Autonomy. But what does that look like when the rubber hits the road? How can we best prepare for scheduling interruptions that can force us out of a building with little notice? And how can we recapture the joy and wonder of our physical classrooms by trading the simple box checking approach to distance learning for a vibrant online hub of student-centered learning? This session harnesses the power of playful learning and offers a high-energy mix of distance teaching tools that help educators of any content area capture the spirit, joy, and self-guided excitement of a brick and mortar Montessori school. Featuring real life examples from a fully gamified high school class (that's right folks, "Montessori" isn't just for the little guys!), teachers will walk away with a keen understanding of the psychology and science behind what makes games just so addictive, along with a ready-to-use library of jaw-dropping passion projects and a rich collection of remote teaching strategies that can help your classes deliver game-changing results no matter where your students are located.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Identifying the Factors That Contribute to Persistent Achievement Gaps
The causes of achievement gaps among marginalized students of color and poor students are complex and vary from school to school. In this session, educators will explore a comprehensive needs assessment tool to identify specific factors within their schools that contribute to persistent achievement gaps. This tool serves as a framework for examining a school’s physical, psychosocial, and academic environments; culture of leadership; and equity and cultural competency. Participants will participate in a collaborative learning community, construct a common language, and learn strategies to identify strengths, weaknesses, inequities, and key leverage areas for eliminating achievement gaps in their schools.

How a Curriculum Cabinet Creates a Thriving School Culture of Transparency and Trust
Imagine a working environment where you are surrounded by transparency and trust. Curriculum is created collaboratively and a culture is cultivated with a deep understanding of best instructional practices for all students. This is what a curriculum cabinet is in its most simplistic form. A curriculum cabinet involves a multitude of staff members in a district, teachers and administrators alike, who work together to solve issues that traditionally get locked up in committees for months or years or never get addressed at all. This session will show any teacher or administrator how this model can work and create thriving school cultures.

How Culturally Responsive School Leaders Can Develop Culturally Responsive Schools
“Originally selected for Empower20” Culturally responsive school leadership focuses on four defining practices school leaders can implement to promote belongingness (i.e., a deep sense of community) in their schools: (1) developing critical self-awareness, (2) supporting culturally responsive teachers, (3) creating responsive and inclusive school environments, and (4) engaging students and parents in community contexts. This session will outline specific practices that foster inclusion, equity, advocacy, and social justice in schools, and participants will engage in interactive and reflective exercises based on these practices. Participants will also discover online tools that can facilitate this work.

How Do You Recruit, Develop, Retain, and Empower More Male Educators of Color?!? You BOND!
The BOND (Building Our Network of Diversity) Project is an initiative in Montgomery County Public Schools (MD) that seeks to recruit, develop, retain, and empower male educators of color and students typically associated with the “achievement gap”. With male educators of color being less than 2% of the teaching force nationwide, it is important to highlight the work of initiatives that have been integral in improving recruitment and retention efforts, building teacher efficacy, and helping to close the achievement gap. Presenting at the ASCD conference is vital to our advocacy in helping school system educators and leaders learn how to best recruit, develop, and retain male educators of color in their districts. In this session, participants will: 1) Learn of the story and mission of the BOND Project. 2) Examine the challenges of male educators of color and benefits of workforce diversity on student achievement. 3) Strategize ideas for improving the recruitment, professional development, and retention initiatives for male educators of color in their school district.

Effective Practices for Teaching All Learners
Even before the coronavirus pandemic, research indicated that less than 20 percent of teachers felt "very prepared" to teach students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. The pandemic has compounded the challenges teachers face in reaching all students, especially students who learn and think differently. In this session, participants will explore learner variability and learn how to reach all students in general education classes, including those with dyslexia and ADHD. Participants will learn how to leverage empathy and compassionate curiosity to better understand students’ behavior challenges. The presenters will share ideas and resources that don’t require extra people or money to support students who learn and think differently.

I Am More Than My Title: Capturing Your Leadership Philosophy
Sometimes people assume we are a type of leader that we are not. How do we fix this? This interactive session will assist school leaders of all levels with the development of a personal leadership philosophy. Participants will distinguish the nuances between a teaching philosophy and leadership philosophy?and create a working draft of a leadership philosophy. This interactive session embraces the reality that many leaders in today’s schools did not set out to be teacher leaders, principals, or superintendents. That is, they end up in leadership roles or with leadership titles in unexpected ways or at unanticipated times. This session provides a step-by-step process to help emerging and serving leaders understand how their own real-life experiences in education, leadership style, core values, and attitudes influence the decisions they make in the K-12 setting.

I No Longer Believe In Classroom Management
Kenneth Blanchard stated, that humans create the systems, and then they allow the systems to define them. How does this ideology apply itself in terms of creating equitable educational opportunities for all students within our schools? Change can no longer be managed, it must be led by the ability of leaders to touch the hearts of those around them. This session will dive deeper into how we can move from theory and deliberation to action in the name of creating equitable actions for ALL STUDENTS!!!

Identifying Differentiation in Online Schools: Virtual Teachers Speak Out
What does differentiation look like in virtual classrooms? To understand how online teachers meet the needs of diverse learners, researchers conducted focus groups and interviews with teachers in virtual schools. The results illuminated practices of virtual teachers and provided a foundation on distinguishing between experts and novices, based on Carol Tomlinson’s work. Initial findings as well instructional practices currently being used by virtual teachers are discussed. Active participation is invited. Participants will leave with initial findings from the study and be invited to share their own perspectives. Originally selected for Empower20.

Igniting Teacher Leadership: Empowering Innovation and Collaboration in Your School
Today's school leaders are uniquely poised to empower and engage teacher leadership in order to foster collaborative leadership in schools, but constraints such as time, space, and professional silos often slow progress. This session will draw from Sterrett's ASCD book Igniting Teacher Leadership and also from Sterrett and Principal Sabrina Hill-Black’s recent ASCD Express piece on “Leading with Joy.” Sterrett and Hill-Black will be joined by Dr. Kerry Robinson, who will infuse strategies to foster health and mindfulness in school. The presenters will offer insight from research and numerous practical strategies from diverse schools focused on empowering teacher leadership to strengthen professional learning communities, fostering innovation, leading in the midst of crises (such as pandemics and hurricanes); and supporting teaching and learning in new powerful ways (such as green school leadership and faculty-driven school improvement).

Implementing Student-Designed Morning Meetings to Define Classroom Culture
How might we provide space and celebrate children's stories so that classroom values are defined by their experiences? As educators, we begin each school year dreaming of a classroom culture that reflects the values we want to instill in the relationships we hold and the learning experiences we foster. Often, this is done through Morning Meeting. The Responsive Classroom model of Morning Meeting begins each day, builds and maintains community and culture, and establishes routines that empower children socially and academically. What stories do we tell that determine our classroom culture? What values do we implicitly or explicitly set into motion by the Morning Meetings we design? Let's boldly re-examine who defines classroom culture and empower students to design Morning Meetings that reflect their hearts, their values, their grievances, and their priorities.

Your Students, My Students, Our Students: Multiple Means of Expression
In this session, we consider the many ways students can demonstrate their understanding, whether in a classroom or while learning at home. We explore these multiple means of expression within the context of construct validity--ensuring that we are measuring what we intend to measure. We generate solutions to these questions: Why are options for expression important? How can we support our teams to provide students with options to show their learning in a way that improves, rather than compromises validity when showing learning, in person and online? How do we provide options and maintain a perception of fairness? How do we provide options in a way that is practical and isn't too time consuming?

Increasing Transparency and Clarity in the Classroom Through Student Learning Maps
The Mill River School District designed a student learning map model to help teachers effectively link curriculum, instruction, and assessment in order to increase the transparency and clarity of expectations for students, thus taking the secrecy out of teaching. This model consists of scaffolded classroom design tools that combine competency-based practices and backward design elements to help teachers plan engaging learning experiences. This session will provide an introduction to the model and examples of the model in use. Participants will then work through various learning map design tools with the support of the presenters.

Inequities Hidden in Plain View: Common School Practices that Disadvantage the Already Disadvantaged
Originally Selected for Empower20: All educators want to create classrooms and schools that are equitable. We want learning environments that are fair for all, and we are fiercely protective of our most vulnerable students. However, many common school practices—even ones designed to help struggling students—heighten inequities between the haves and the have-nots who enter our schools. In this session, you will learn why practices such as certain kinds of homework, praise, incentive systems, and having students bring in their own school supplies can be so damaging for needy students. You’ll walk away with many practical strategies for improving equity to try instead.

Informing Practice Through Research -- The Impact of Equitable Learning Technologies on Teachers and Students
Join us as we examine powerful intersections between technology implementation, student and teacher voice, equity, and professional development. Using data from multiple studies conducted with teachers across the United States, we will examine the critical role schools play in introducing students to learning technologies and the impact the larger school community has on student autonomy, technology integration success, equity issues, and student voice. One of the surprising findings from our work was the inadvertent misalignment between schools' goals for equity, technology usage, attitudes toward technology, and actual in-class outcomes. Through our work, we hope to engage participants to actively think about meaningful PD, reflect more deeply on what equitable access to learning technologies looks like in a classroom setting, and the importance of student/teacher voice in implementation and the assessment of whether or not technology created value. Using teacher and student stories, data from our own research as well as key findings from research in the field, we will challenge participants to consider structural challenges/solutions with technology, frameworks for effective PD, and the vital role of school community in terms of technology attitudes and success.

Inquiring Minds: Teaching and Learning with Good Questions
What is a good question - or rather, how could we use good questions to stimulate deeper thinking, expand knowledge, and encourage students to express and share their learning in their own unique way? Learn how to deliver inquiry-based learning experiences that use good questions to "hook" students' curiosity and interest to learn, assess and build foundational knowledge using students' own questions, deepen understanding and awareness, and develop students' talent and thinking into personal expertise they can use in different contexts and new situations.

Instructional Learning Visits: Building a Collaborative, Sustainable Culture of Learning for All
Changing the culture and climate of a school begins with a shared vision for school wide improvement and effective instruction. How can instructional coaches lead the process that transforms professional development into professional learning in a collaborative, sustainable systems approach that shifts the thinking from the traditional to the novel? The "before, during, and after" coaching conversations create the structure for the Instructional Learning Visits (ILVs), a non-evaluative, confidential, and safe environment for teachers and coaches to plan together and talk about practices that are relevant, evidence-based, and student driven.

Into the Unknown: Supporting Pre-Service Teachers in Times of Remote Instruction
Recent global events have pushed teacher preparation programs into the unknown of preparing pre-service teachers via remote instruction, which poses unique challenges for field-based learning experiences. Learn how two liberal arts institutions in the Southeastern United States--one private and one public--have worked to address these challenges. Instructors and pre-service teachers will share strategies and insights into the complexities of preparing to leave behind an impact on future students, while also leaving behind traditional forms of teacher preparation. Participants will analyze their own experiences with preparing preservice teachers in lieu of traditional field placements, while also collaborating to re-envision preparing pre-service teachers for careers in classrooms that continue to be impacted by factors such as equity, access, and remote/online learning.

Is There a Home for Me Here? Making Your Classroom a Welcoming Place for Students of Color
When you walk into a classroom what do you look for first? The exits? The posters on the walls? Cultural representations? The type and number of books? The ways in which the learning space is arranged? Now, picture your students. Think about what might be going through their minds as they enter your classroom. They wonder if they are safe. They wonder if they are welcome in your space. They wonder if they belong. The psychology literature tells us that “belonging” is the gateway to positive learning outcomes. When students feel they belong, their brains are more capable of absorbing information. Belonging starts with the relationship teachers have with students – reflected in the artifacts, posters, and books present within each room. When teachers develop authentic student relationships through a culturally sustaining lens, they provide a secure and welcoming environment that allows students to connect emotionally with their space. This, in turn, supports the executive functions needed to learn. In this session, we will examine a Montessori classroom, exploring the tension between clean, sparsely decorated classrooms that limit distractions and classrooms rich in culture that reflect the students. We will discuss ways teachers can better use their rooms to support student learning.

IT IS POSSIBLE! How a Community Can Unlock the Full Potential of ALL Students through Viable Career and College Pathways.
Our vision in Hillsboro School District is to create guaranteed, clear and viable pathways for ALL 20,000+ Hillsboro students. Over the past 6 years using the model of collective impact we have seen significant metric increases in career and college readiness (FAFSA, 2/4 year postsecondary rates, internships, dual credit enrollment, graduation rates, etc.). Through our presentation we will describe what collect impact is, how it can be used to empower an entire community (local business, postsecondary education, nonprofit organizations, etc.) to bring career and college readiness alive not only in a district, but throughout a community. Attendees will explore our PK-12 career and college pathways framework from a district and building leader's perspective. We will provide a framework that any district can take and implement right away with clear action steps for success that is driven by the foundation and integration of CASEL competencies and Career and College Readiness indicators. You will leave our session filled with renewed energy that with the power of your community, comprehensive career and college readiness for every student IS POSSIBLE!

Know Your Stakeholders: How Crucial Data from Stakeholders Can Improve Assessment and Grading Reforms
School closures and learning-from-home required schools to make changes in the way they assess, grade, and report student learning. While most stakeholders accepted these changes in the short term, continued and further change could bring unanticipated resistance from students, teachers, parents, board members, and even school leaders. Knowing the perspectives of these key stakeholders can greatly enhance the success of future assessment and grading improvement efforts. Participants in this session will learn how to design, administer, and analyze stakeholder surveys for their schools and districts. With essential data on stakeholders’ perspectives, education leaders can identify concerns, anticipate difficulties, minimize uncertainty, and direct problem-solving strategies to ensure greater success in implementing assessment and grading reforms. Using the insights gained from knowing stakeholders’ perspectives, leaders will be able to plan for anticipated hazards and then take simple, timely actions to alleviate the personal concerns and resistance of different stakeholders that thwart so many well-intentioned change efforts, while increasing confidence and unity across the school community.

Learning Coaches Empower Students with Personal Learning Strategies (PLS)
Originally selected for Empower20, this program will show how a Learning Coach Mindset can empower students to learn more effectively both in school and in the future. Today, people are exposed to vast amounts of information. Comprehending complex information, analyzing it, and incorporating it into a specific purpose can be a challenge. Students need to engage actively in the ownership of their leaning and develop their own Personal Learning Strategies (PLS). Knowing what learning strategies are effective for them, they will be ready for post-secondary learning in college, trade schools, and for their future employment. When students enter a secondary classroom, they face increasingly complex informational texts. Learning Coaches believe that Kids C-A-N Learn new information by Connecting, Applying, and Navigating through the information with their own Personal Learning Strategies (PLS). Focusing on how to learn the curricular information, Learning Coaches provide their students with opportunities to practice and reflect upon the effectiveness of different learning strategies for them. In this program, participants will engage in strategies that students can use to develop their Personal Learning Strategies (PLS).

Learning that Sticks
If you were to ask 100 doctors to describe how the circulatory system works, you’d likely hear similar answers. Yet if you were to ask 100 teachers how learning works—how our brains turn information into long-term memory, their answers would likely be much more vague and inconsistent- if not short. Consider that for a moment. Something as critical to teaching as how learning actually works remains a mystery for many teachers and seldom guides our efforts to engage students in deep learning. The good news is we know a lot about how learning works for all students and how curiosity propels it at each step along so that learning not only sticks, but also feels more joyful for students. In this session, you’ll learn a simple model of learning that engages and challenges students at all levels. Leave a Legacy--Be the One Who Took Them from Surviving to Thriving!
Schools are stressful places. Whether you work in a well-resourced, private school or an underfunded school in an underserved area, teaching and supporting those who teach is emotional work. Approximately half a million U.S. teachers leave the profession each year. It's time to invest in the emotional literacy of educators and cultivate resilience. Resilient educators create and maintain a healthy school culture and embrace change. This session will explore what you can do with educators to build habits that lead to emotional literacy. Let's go through surviving to thriving!

Lights, Cameras, TEACH!
Student engagement can (and should) look different from classroom to classroom. In this session, educators will explore ways to turn their academic content into learning experiences. Participants will get ideas on how to transform their lessons to create authentic learning experiences for their students. The session will include ideas that promote active learning and ones that can be immediately implemented in any classroom. As a teacher in a school that designs a curriculum around teaching the whole child, this workshop will focus on the whole child approach, emphasizing engaging, challenging, and supporting each learner through collaboration. Educators will also participate in academic games that can be used to review any academic content. Additionally, ways to deepen classroom culture, a behind-the-scenes look in my own classroom, and tales from my seventeen years in the elementary school classroom will be shared.
