Lourdes Alvarez-Ortiz, PhD, is an independent educational consultant and ASCD Faculty member. In partnership with school districts, she has led non-profit organizations in implementing one-of-a- kind reform initiatives to close the opportunity gap. She has worked collaboratively with teachers and administrators to optimize students’ potential, successfully engage families and communities, and use culturally responsive practices while adopting a strengths-based approach.
Dr. Alvarez-Ortiz is also a bilingual-bicultural school psychologist with over two decades of experience working in urban school districts and advocating for culturally and linguistically non-discriminatory assessments and asset-based practices. With expertise in assessing and supporting students’ socio-emotional and academic development, she has been instrumental in creating safe, supportive, engaging, and strengths-based school culture and climate, particularly for students and families who experience adversity and those who serve them.
At the center of Dr. Alvarez-Ortiz’s work is the relentless pursuit of empowering students, families, educators, and communities to capitalize on their potential. She presents at local, state, and national conferences including ASCD and TESOL. She also facilitates webinars and professional learning events.
She received a doctorate degree in School Psychology from Temple University and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico.
Dr. Alvarez-Ortiz has written for ASCD Inservice and is the co-author of Teaching to Strengths: Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress.
