Playing the Scene You’re In (Not the One You Want to Be In)
We are not teaching educators to become improvisers on a theatrical stage, we're teaching the skills of an improviser to put into practice on your stage: in meetings with parents, in the classroom, anywhere you need to operate at peak performance. Improvisational skill is the ability to adapt and excel in communication, collaboration, leadership, change readiness - all with boundless resilience to weather what's new and changing and unexpected. These are the skills for the world we work and live in now and for the future. Together we’ll make this an unforgettable experience! The Joyful School Culture: How Safe Are We?
Life in schools is a bit of a persistent whirlwind, isn't it? The past two years have provided huge additional challenges and have unsettled school cultures even more. The good news is that as we attempt to build schools that are better places for teachers and students, we can adapt to life's fast changes while solidifying school foundations so all those who inhabit schools will thrive, work hard for results, and find joy in daily occurrences. In this session, we will explore three unique but interrelated kinids of safety which must exist in concert to create a culture of learning for both teachers and students. We will also discuss how a sense of purpose is so vital in building emotional and social safety among the teachers who are giving it all. Participants will explore how to conduct real dialogue with co-workers which not only reinforces effort but pushes for next steps. Leave with a broader understanding of what it means to have a "safe" school. Learn how to examinie your own schools for evidence of safety. See how to build safety through accomplishment and purpose, providing opportunities to experience the kind of workplace joy we all seek.

Aim for Excellence: What Equity Looks Like
All scholars deserve to be taught using rigorous, innovative practices by adults who allow them to bring their whole-selves into the classroom each day. Team Selma has been intentional about employing six equity strategies designed to engage learners through Academies of Academic Excellence, restorative practices and a laser-like focus on student advocacy and wellness. Selma, located in the Blackbelt of Alabama, is widely known for Bloody Sunday and the civic engagement that led to the Voters'' Rights Act being passed in 1965. The journey for equity continues. Join members of Team Selma as they share this transformative work, embodied in district core values, and show what true equity looks like in action. Attendees will walk away with a greater understanding of how educational equity is defined in practice. Specific strategies will be shared for classroom teachers and leaders at every level.

Aligning Curriculum to Valued Outcomes of Learning
What do you value for your students? Schools articulate the answer to this question through their vision and mission, and when carefully examined, educators find that there is much more to their promise than the dissemination of information. Schools strive to provide students with an education that fosters their intellectual and social and emotional well-being, honors who they are and provides multiple pathways for achieving their goals. Yet, the curriculum, the tool teachers use to make decision about classroom practice, is often limited to content knowledge. How can curriculum be designed to attend to valued outcomes for all students? How can it foster learning experiences in which students thrive and work towards fulfilling their potential? This session unpacks the Curriculum that Matters Framework, discussed in the text Making Curriculum Matter: How to Build SEL, Equity and Other Priorities into Daily Instruction. It identifies five elements: practices, deep thinking, social and emotional learning, civic participation and discourse, and equity, that can be used for examining the vision and mission of schools and aligning curriculum and instruction. During the workshop, participants will review examples of how each of these elements can exist in curriculum and instruction, and how, by leveraging the overlap, curriculum can be an entry point into building equitable learning experiences for all students. Participants will leave the workshop with a tool for examining their own curriculum and ideas for strengthening its alignment to their valued outcomes.

Assessing with Respect: Focus on Student-Led Conferences
Assessment shouldn't be an isolated experience. Student voice and choice must be a part of the process. In this session, participants will learn how to develop a robust student-led conference system that allows students to articulate their learning in a meaningful way. Educators will be able to use the practice of conferring to support students in their learning and assess what they know and can do by their ability to show evidence of learning. Why not make our classrooms a space where student self-advocacy thrives and we assess what they truly understand.

Designing Performance Tasks and Projects to Engage Students in Authentic Work
Authentic performance-based assessments (PBA) and project-based learning (PBL) offer opportunities to capture the attention, curiosity, and investment of students. These types of learning experiences and assessments, done best, have value outside of the classroom – either through real world or personal relevance – and hold the potential to reignite student interest and engagement in learning. However, educators seeking to employ performance-based experiences for students may need guidance to better conceptualize how to design and implement PBA and PBL. Featuring examples from real classrooms, the session will explore practical tools for successful task design and implementation with the goal of ensuring ALL students thrive while engaging in rich, authentic learning experiences.

Evidence, Inference, Impact: The Keys to Effective Collaboration
Well-functioning teacher and leadership teams are essential to the continuous improvement of schools, especially in times of change and uncertainty. When schools and school systems de-emphasize individual practice and promote collective ability, the conditions are created for educators to continuously reflect on and improve their practice. In this highly interactive and engaging session, you’ll learn how to implement a four-step collaborative protocol that fosters positive relationships, encourages responsible autonomy, and creates professionals who enthusiastically believe they can improve student outcomes through equitable learning cultures. When teams follow this protocol consistently, both collaboration and student achievement increase.

Executive Function: The Key to Reading Proficiency
Proficient reading is perhaps the most critical of all academic skills. But what does it mean to be a proficient reader? Proficient readers engage deeply with texts, collect and evaluate textual evidence, and attend to important text features. Such readers are also self-aware: they understand that they need to make these processes conscious and that they have active control over them.
This session brings together the work of two of today’s top education experts. Margaret Searle will demonstrate how to use executive function to help students become more self-aware and self-monitoring readers. Harvey Silver will introduce ready-to-use reading tools that combine executive function and proficient reading skills. These tools are easy to integrate into current lessons and units with whatever texts and programs teachers are already using.

Framing A School’s Culture Through Empathy: Making a Positive Difference for Students and Staff
Being an educator has never been easy, and it is much, much harder today. The distrust and doubts created by the Covid-19 and CRT misinformation and misunderstandings have swept the nation and are camped inside our schools. Teachers work to help students respond to a lost year or more while also worrying about the physical and emotional health of their students, their families, and themselves. School leaders must be more than academic officers, organizational experts, or disciplinarians; they must be the Chief Empathy Officer and lead by listening, trusting, and developing others. A CEO helps everyone grow by respecting and engaging others in identifying, defining, and solving problems. This session will focus on the role of empathy in PD, how to use empathy in avoiding and managing conflicts, and how to grow our and others? empathy.

How Rich Discussions Can Impact Student Learning
As the end to remote learning comes into sight for teachers, many have begun to imagine which teaching strategies and practices they will continue to develop. Many educators have noted how their teaching has fundamentally changed during the pandemic. Adapting to remote and hybrid teaching and learning has inspired teachers to focus on what is most important as well as what is possible. Facilitating students? ability to form and maintain relationships with others has been crucial. Integrated ways to develop that skill includes teaching communication skills, modeling, promoting, and practicing critical thinking and careful listening.

How to Help all your Teachers Grow One Level, in One Domain, in One Year or Less.
Is it really possible to help every teacher you serve make tangible growth every single year? In this interactive session, you'll discover that it's not only possible, it's absolutely necessary if you want to see significant student growth each year. Find out the exact steps you need to take in order to help every teacher in your school identify their most critical growth area, how you can differentiate your support so that each teacher gets what they need to grow (without working yourself to death in the process), and how to create a Teacher Dashboard you can use to track progress and provide teachers with the exact support they need to grow at least one level, in one critical domain, in one year or less.

Improve Your Lesson Plans with SEL
By integrating SEL skill into our daily interactions and lessons, we relentlessly build student competencies, harness their attention to the deeper purposes of the lessons, and have a lasting impact on how students see themselves as members of their communities in and out of school--and remind us all why we really wanted to work in schools with young people. ASCD author and long- time teacher and school leader Jeffrey Benson will provide very specific strategies and activities that take what we are now doing-- our random and implicit prompts and praise to use SEL skills-- and make that an explicit and intentional curriculum within our daily work.

Men and Boys of Color Leading, Learning, and Growing: The Story of the BOND Academy
Millions of current and former students have never been in a classroom led by a Black or Latino male educator. The BOND Academy, the yearly conference sponsored by the Building Our Network of Diversity (BOND) Project, aims to remedy that problem. The Academy features powerful presentations and discussions on instructional strategies, career advancement, community building, cultural proficiency, and social emotional learning, primarily through the lens of Black and Latino men and boys. Men and boys at every level of education (e.g., teachers, professors, counselors, paraeducators, administrators, central office staff, student interns, students have led workshops for any members of the community. Hear first-hand experiences from men and boys who have facilitated sessions at the Academy about how they deepened their knowledge and skills through preparing to lead their workshops and connecting with their audiences. You will also listen to audience members describe the powerful impacts of their Academy experiences. You will no doubt leave this session inspired to organize your own Academy in your city, and the BOND Academy’s leaders will be there to help you take the first steps!

PD in a Box: Build Teacher Capacity by Creating Self-Guided Professional Development Kits Using a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Format
Building the capacity of our teachers and encouraging them to drive their own development is a challenge worth the undertaking. However, time constraints, accountability pressures, and external factors seem to get in the way from tailoring development to teacher needs. There is an easy way to differentiate professional development that reaches the needs of all educators, builds their own teaching capacity, encourages advocating for their own learning, and provides them with evidence of their learning journey. The answer? PD in a Box. Attendees of this session will have strategies to approach professional development in an innovative way. They will leave with the tools and resources necessary to create an action plan for their first PD in a Box, including resources to get them started with links, pictures, and samples from an existing kit.

Starting the Minimalist Teacher Journey
It is impossible to list the numerous tasks teachers do, and decisions they make each day. In today?s educational context, under the endless expectations, teachers feel compelled to work in a way that is not healthy or sustainable. Recognizing the fatigue teachers face and addressing how capacity can be built by refocusing attention on the essentials can help skilled educators want to remain in the profession. How do we reduce this fatigue and shift from ?everything is important? to the things that are actually our priorities? Bringing a minimalist mindset to the classroom can help shed the burden of too many initiatives, strategies, and ?things? in general. ASCD author presenters will debunk myths about minimalist approaches to teaching and introduce decision-making tools to help participants reflect on current practices. Participants will engage in reflection activities and work with tools created by the authors to begin planning for a more sustainable future in their profession.

Systemic Changes to Improve Educational Experiences and Outcomes for African American and Other Marginalized Students and Families
If you are interested in improving educational experiences and outcomes for African American and other marginalized students and families, then this session is for you. Come and learn with and from four African American superintendents who have led in California educational systems. These leaders from the California Association of African American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) are considered history makers and stereotype breakers who have deeply explored how to make systemic changes from inside and outside of the classroom. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how to lead educational change efforts to increase student graduation rates, attendance and college opportunities while decreasing suspensions and expulsions. Attendees, who serve inside and outside of the classroom, will also hear how partnerships can enhance and accelerate educational change efforts.

Tackling the Motivation Crisis: How to Activate Student Learning Without Behavior Charts, Pizza Parties, or Other Hard-to-Quit Incentive Systems
Do we have to do this? Is this going to be graded? When am I ever going to use this in real life? Questions like this can feel infuriating. They seem to indicate a lack of motivation in students, and it's so disheartening to feel like we're having to threaten or bribe students to get them to do schoolwork. After all, didn't we get into teaching because we're passionate about learning—and don't we want our students to share that passion? In this active and interactive (and dare I say provocative?) session, we'll tackle the problem of students' (lack of) motivation. We'll look at common school practices (such as traditional grading, incentives, and praise) that are meant to motivate but which actually demotivate. We'll also explore lots of practical strategies for tapping into students' intrinsic motivations so that they'll more energized and engaged with daily learning. You'll walk away from this workshop with a more complete understanding of how motivation actually works as well as many strategies for making learning more motivational for your students. You'll also gain access to a robust set of online resources to help you continue to learn about this topic.

Teaching Students to Decode the World: Engaging Teachers and Librarians as Partners for Media Literacy in Every Classroom
In today?s increasingly complex and media-saturated world, teachers need effective and engaging activities to integrate media literacy and critical thinking into their curriculum on an ongoing basis. The richly metacognitive process of constructivist media decoding (CMD) provides a powerful model for engaging students from different backgrounds and skill levels in the collaborative analysis of media messages through inquiry-based learning and reflection. In this highly interactive session, participants will engage in a range of innovative CMD activities designed to support the K-12 classroom curriculum and inspire vigorous teaching. The presenter will share stories from the field that highlight collaborative partnerships between teachers and librarians that address issues related to information and news literacy, the impact of social media on children and adolescents, and providing a safe and supportive environment for challenging conversations about the central issues of our time. Participants will receive access to hundreds of free classroom-ready resources and models for integrating CMD into their own schools and classrooms, as well as demonstrations and guidelines for using effective approaches to engage students in CMD as part of online learning.

The Flexibly Grouped Classroom: Creating Equitable Collaborative Learning Experiences
Used strategically, instructional group work can help students thrive by fostering community, increasing collaborative capacity, and supporting equity. Unfortunately – used incorrectly –group work can erode those very same entities. This session will provide principles and practices for making classroom grouping “work” for all students. Participants will explore a framework to facilitate flexible grouping, examine guidelines for what kinds of groups to use for what purpose, and glean management tips to help groups function effectively and respectfully. By using snapshots from real classrooms, this session will paint a vivid picture of how to make the most of instructional grouping in all learning settings with the ultimate goals of fostering student growth and infusing joy into learning.

The Parable of the Sower: Family Engagement’s Impact on Achievement and Equity
Every year, most schools and districts lose 10-30 percent or more of the academic and equity gains they could have had because of ineffective family engagement. As an educator, you should know that family engagement has changed substantially over the last several years and that understanding these changes can help you tap into the power families have to transform your campus and improve a host of student outcomes. During this presentation, we will help you to understand Next-Generation Family Engagement and create the conditions necessary so that all of the time and energy you put into improving your school and district will have the impact it should have on achievement, equity and other student outcomes.

Triaging Teacher Burnout- From Lightly Toasted to Third Degree
According to Seidel (2014), about half a million or 15% of U.S. teachers leave the profession every year. In fact, more than 41% of teachers leave with the first five years (Ingersoll, Merrill, & Stuckey, 2014). Teaching and leading during a pandemic brought about a new set of job demands and level of exhaustion (Sokal, Trudel, & Babb, 2020). This presentation will provide small steps one Title I school used to support their staff culture, combat teacher burnout for new and experienced teachers, and avoid high turnover rates to become a National School of Character. Teachers and leaders will walk away with resources and practical strategies they can implement today!

The Educator’s ATLAS: Your Roadmap to Joyful, Engaging, & Successful Classrooms
This session is for teachers struggling with explicit direct instruction, principals primed to speak at their next staff meeting, district personnel preparing to present in front of the school board...literally anyone, who speaks in any capacity, and wants to engage, educate, and resonate in order to meet his/her desired outcome. There’s a fundamental difference between speaking and being heard; between being taught and being told. The difference lives in a person’s ability to engage and resonate. Engagement and resonance are words we throw around all the time without stopping to consider how those who actually do it well, are able to do it in the first place. Can we distill resonance? Absolutely. Can we deconstruct, teach, and replicate engagement? Most certainly. Join Weston as he takes participants on an engaging and highly participatory session focused on creating engaging learning experiences via, the ATLAS Protocol, for students of all ages. Participants will leave with tools and strategies for immediate implementation. Speaker(s): Weston Kieschnick

Strategies for Families to Support High School Students - It’s All About Social Emotional Learning
Over the past twenty months, partnerships with families have taken on a new meaning. Schools have always viewed students? families as vital components to student success but there is increased importance on helping teens manage their learning and emotions. Schools have an opportunity to connect and engage with families through regular discussions designed to help them support their children's learning and development. While teachers, counselors, and tutors are finding ways to provide support, school partnerships with families should include providing information on supporting their teens? mental, social and emotional wellness. Family engagement has now moved from ?just in case? advice to ?just in time? family support. During this session, we will examine how one school is providing this support through discussions focused on content for parents and caregivers on helping teens build skills and would help support teens? academic success as well as their social emotional learning (SEL) skills.

Listen to What the Kids Say: Guidance from the People We Teach
For a variety of reasons, most of us enter our first classrooms with little meaningful understanding of what good teaching looks like, why those attributes matter, and how to make them a reality in our classrooms. If we are lucky, we find colleagues who are somehow teaching with clarity about those things and translating that clarity into practice which, to a novice teacher, can seem like magic. Or perhaps, we find just the right book at just the right time by an author who seems to be speaking directly to us. Or we happen to be in a school where professional growth opportunities are generous, grounded in the wisdom of our profession and yet tailored to the specific needs of the varied developmental stages of the teachers. We are less likely to consult a fourth source that can profoundly influence our development as teachers and as human beings—the students we teach. In this luncheon keynote, we’ll take a bit of time to listen to what the kids have to say to us. Sometimes their words make us smile or laugh. Sometimes they evoke tears. Always they are real and worthy of our attention. Come hear what a young person just might have to say to you. Speaker(s): Carol Ann Tomlinson

Happiness, Success, and Realizing Your Potential in the New Normal
Is there any part of our lives that COVID-19 hasn’t touched? Whether it’s the way we learn, work, connect with each other, even spend our leisure time—it’s clear that pretty much everything has been transformed in the wake of this pandemic. But the thing that interests performance coach and positive psychologist Dan Lerner the most is the way it’s changing our perspective on something essential: our wellbeing. Drawing on real-life stories and examples that come from his class ‘The Science of Happiness’ at New York University, Lerner explores how we can address the unique challenges of the coronavirus—isolation, low mood, collective loss, financial hardship—while also making room for new opportunities to thrive in this environment. With his signature high-energy brand of storytelling, Lerner offers us simple yet powerful insights as to how we can make sense of this tragedy, maintain hope, and care for ourselves and each other. Addressing School Employee Wellness During COVID-19 and Beyond
Teachers and staff continue to face enormous pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic, while balancing their own well-being. Comprehensive school employee wellness (SEW) programs are needed throughout the pandemic and beyond. The possibility of K-12 schools adding permanent virtual learning options for students means that some of our nation?s teachers will be working remotely 100%. Schools will need to rely on tools available for diverse programs that meet the needs of in-person and virtual teachers. CDC collaborated with National Association of Chronic Disease Directors to create the SEW Guide. The guide provides schools with action steps to assess needs, create and implement a plan, and evaluate progress. The guide includes examples of existing, evidence-based programs and interventions with low investment for schools. This session will provide participants with key data and evidence about SEW programs, a hands-on experience for using the SEW guide, and time for discussion to learn from others.

Making Learning Stick with Challenging Learning Tasks and Performance Assessments
For as long as many of us can remember, classroom assessments have largely been pencil-and-paper tests with multiple-choice and open-response items. Ostensibly, they are supposed to capture how much students have learned. Yet research suggests that within 30 days, students forget as much as 90 percent of what they learn in our classrooms, which is not surprising given what we know about how our brains store and retrieve information in our long-term memories. During this session, you?ll learn insights from the science of learning as well as practical methods for integrating challenging learning tasks with classroom-embedded performance assessments—authentic measures of learning built into regular classrooms—to tap into student curiosity, engage them in deep learning that sticks, and along the way, make learning more joyful and rewarding.

Exercising Students SEL Muscles
This presentation will demonstrate an instructional strategy from Students Taking Action Together, an approach that fosters social-emotional and character (SEL) skill development, civil discourse, and social action in students grades 5 and higher. The strategy is Yes-No-Maybe and it involves asking students questions or posing a statement to them about which they must answer Yes (agree), No (disagree), or Maybe (not sure) and then discuss and report out in peer groups of students feeling the same way why they had this view. Y-N-M can be done at the start of a unit and then revisiting following reading or study in that area. When done over time, in small doses, over the course of a school year and then over multiple years, Y-N-M fosters considerable SEL skill-building, respect for diversity, and empathic listening—all attributes our classrooms, schools, communities, and organizations need now more than ever. We will demonstrate this strategy and show how it can be applied to any area in which a participant interacts with groups of students. Links also will be provided to additional materials using the Y-N-M instructional strategy.

Empathy Interviews 101
Empathy interviews can drive school improvement by unlocking expertise and institutional knowledge that may be otherwise overlooked by tapping into the experiences and stories of stakeholders (teachers, students, families, etc.). Participants will learn how empathy interviews build trust, reveal blind spots, generate solutions, identify teacher- and student-leaders, strengthen a sense of belonging, and improve school culture. This hands-on session will include an introduction to the philosophy behind empathy interviews, frame the tool within the context of school improvement, and create space to utilize design thinking to plan for successful implementation in a small- or large-scale setting. Participants will develop questions, practice the process, and plan for next steps. Session facilitator will share his own experiences with using empathy interviews to improve his leadership.

Navigating a Course to Effective Coaching
Coaching cycles are more than a process or set of steps to work through. Coaching cycles are rooted in a mindset of inquiry, curiosity, reflection, and vulnerability. As coaches, we know coaching makes a difference for teachers and students. Instructional practices have a higher level of transfer into the classroom when coupled with coaching. Yet, our work is not a one-size-fits-all approach. This interactive session will guide participants through navigating a course to effective coaching. We will explore a humanistic and compassionate coaching process that places teachers and students at the center.

Relegated to a Separate Room: The Lived Experience of English Learners
The number of students labeled ELL (English language learners) has grown approximately 60% over the last decade (Quintero & Hansen, 2017). This presentation highlights inequities and unintended consequences of ELL classification through the telling of the stories of people formerly ELL-classified during their K-12 schooling who are now working in the field of education. Hearing the perceptions of the people who lived the English learner experience gives a voice to and a deeper understanding of the potential stigma of being classified as an English learner and may inform policy, practice, and professional learning. Takeaways include awareness of the unintended consequences of ELL classification students, the need for asset-based mindsets through diversity training, and requiring higher expectations for ELLs, ensuring linguistic and reading support is provided for ELLS along the way through targeted professional learning for leaders and classroom teachers prioritizing the connection between linguistics and reading.

This session will demonstrate a step-by-step process to help teachers shift from feeling overwhelmed by burnout and compassion fatigue to feeling empowered to take control of their own recovery. Participants will learn the basics principles of the science of burnout and compassion fatigue and take a brief, evidence-based assessment to measure their own burnout, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue levels. Participants will be introduced to four evidence-based practices that increase resilience and decrease compassion fatigue and interactively develop a burnout and compassion fatigue recovery plan to guide recovery throughout the rest of their career.

Coherence in Mission, Culture, and Practice in a Large Public High School
Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California serves a diverse population of zip codes within the same attendance zone. By being explicit about values, empowering teacher leaders, and engaging community partners by making the mission a moral imperative, Sequoia has de-tracked core classes, increased enrollment in IB courses, expanded equitable grading practices, and improved measurable outcomes for students. This presentation will track efforts over a five year period and give attendees practical next steps, tools for self-assessment, prompts for identifying priorities, and the courage to be explicit about values to lead with ambition and heart.

Make Them Matter
Each school district is tasked with the enormous task of welcoming students and families back into their school buildings, forever changed from the previous years' events. In this presentation, the presenters will engage participants to reevaluate their educational "why" and challenge each participant to review their location's current state of instruction, process, protocol, and practices. In this process, each participant will ascertain whether their learning environments are equipped to confront systemic and implicit barriers that marginalize students and families. Presenters will challenge participants to establish a "bare minimum" for engagement of all stakeholders in their district or school buildings. Participants will be challenged to "prepare for disruption" as they brainstorm and vision board to ensure that all voices and viewpoints are valued within their districts and school buildings.

Teaching with Empathy: How to Transform Your Practice by Understanding Your Learners
Every single action we take, from our conversations with students to planning and delivering instruction, signifies our level of empathy toward them as individuals. While many teachers believe they are empathetic to their students’ stories, their actions (while well-intended) often implicitly shame students further adding to the disconnection they feel. Educators’ primary role in today’s educational landscape is to ensure students feel safe and connected, in a consistently empathetic learning environment.

Formulating Effective Feedback: Changing Teacher Practice One Conversation at a Time
Let's face it. Giving feedback isn't quite as easy as it seems. Fragile egos, miscommunication, and poor timing can make even the most confident leader stumble over their words or struggle to articulate what needs to be said. Yet feedback is a key driver of performance, leadership effectiveness, and the improvement of student outcomes. So how does one provide feedback that feeds forward? What does it look like to craft feedback for a teacher who is teaching a subject you've never taught or has been in the classroom longer than you've been a leader? How do we formulate effective feedback that empowers teachers to take charge of their professional learning and growth? In this fast-paced session we'll tackle these questions and more! Walk away with practical tools in hand to support your work changing teacher practice, one conversation at a time.
